Well after watching a fair bit of E3 coverage today, I will say today was better than yesterday. I will start with Nintendos conference. Most people seem to be focusing on the failed Zelda demo, but really, after watching some other people play the demo, it looks amazing. Totally responsive, and looks to be pretty fun. This is the kind of motion control I like, which is why I will be getting the Move as well. Kinect is just too much for me...I don't want to jump around my living room like a moron, I want to sit on my couch and game...that's what gaming is to me. I can do that with Zelda, with motion control...I don't need to run in place to move and jump to jump up or over things.

Nintendo also dropped the ball on A LOT of great titles. New Donkey Kong, Kirby, Golden Eye...these games will sell like hot cakes, even though I personally won't get them. The 3DS is also looking nice. Was glad to see Kid Icarus finally coming back to gaming. Also looks like the 3DS is going to get lots of 3rd party support too.

As for Sony, I think they had the best conference. While I won't jump into the 3D gaming, I thought it was cool that they are going to put 2 versions of games on their disc...both the 3D version and normal version...glad to see they are thinking about that kind of stuff. As for games...Dead Space 2 getting exclusive stuff, Medal of Honor getting exclusives, Twisted Metal...Sony is looking really good. Could have done without the whole PSP section...it's just a dead platform that needs to die.

As for the Move, I was impressed. Looks super responsive, and sounds like it's going to get some good 3rd party support as well. The price is iffy. I understand familys will need a few controllers, and that can get pricey very fast, so we'll have to see what they do about that. As for me, I'm one person, so I will get one. If friends want to play, they can buy their own imo lol. I'm sure my brother will get one, as will a few of my friends, so we'll just bring our controllers over to each others houses if we want to game together.

Then for me, the big annoucement was Portal and Steamworks coming to PS3/N. Gabe Newell has critized the platform lots in the past, so for him to come out and annouce this was pretty huge. He also mentioned that Portal 2 on the PS3 will be the best version of any console. For Sony to get Valve on board is a big deal. I'm interested to see what the future will bring for this pairing.

Now to get back to real life and study for my exam tonight :P

I think that Nintendo's conference was the best because they brought a lot of games that we love and will always love combined with what might be the most promising tech at the event. Sony did a good job though, while I'm quick to defend the Kinect in some aspects, as I think it is impressive tech with some great possibilities, I agree that I really don't want to move around in front of my TV and the software they showed off sucked.

What I do like about the Kinect, however, is its freedom from peripherals and thus its ability to utilize a far greater variety of movement. I wonder how this will work with peripherals and simple objects, what if I don't want to wave my hand around to slash my sword, what if I want to use a plastic sword or a stick? Will that get in the way of Kinect making sense of my movements? I definitely don't want to just hold my hands up for racing games, but if I can use a dreamcast wheel with it, this becomes less of an issue.

motion control and 3d gaming are terrible gimmicks that need to go away. natal voice command is nice though. xbox make me an omlette.

The problem I have with 3D is that I already start dealing with motion sickness from some first/third person games.  Playing them in 3D will be impossible for me without being drugged on bonine the entire time.

Good thing the 3DS has an off-switch.

I can't see anyone being surprised by Portal 2 being at E3, but it did look pretty cool.

Sony's press conference has got me thinking: should I get Mafia 2 for the PC or Mafia 2 for the PS3? Decisions, decisions, decisions...

It sounds like Portal 2 will have a cool soundtrack.

Heh, nice commentary by our old nemesis in that Portal trailer. I particularly liked its lines at the very end. I'll probably never play that game but I liked what I saw.

Another thing I forgot to mention in my post, is that it seems console gaming is the future, and PC gaming will slowly be pushed to the side. When you see all these Xbox and PS3 exclusives...not to mention now we are seeing Xbox and PS3 exclusive content for each of those platforms, for games being released for all 3 platforms.

Just something I have seen a lot more of lately...and I find myself questioning if I should get games for my PS3 or my PC. My PC is very good, and will be able to handle any new game coming out...but it just seems like the consoles are getting better support, and more exclusive content.

There are a lot fo exclusives, but there are also a lot of games still being released on the PC, and I usually prefer the PC version to the console versions due to visual tweaking and modding. If you don't have everything, you're missing out to some degree, but I'm still glad I have my PC as a gaming option and it's stil really the only platform for MMOs.

I'm sure the 25 million users sitting on steam, the 12 million wow subscribers, the 100 million people playing farmvill, the 8 million people playing guild wars, the expected 9-10 million about to play Starcraft, the expected millions playing the old republic and Diablo III disagree.

About 6 big games for each platform?

It's not the amount of users that matter. The last console I bought before a PS3 was a N64. I love PC gaming...however, developers are developing with the consoles in mind more and more lately. Not to mention, PC has been getting some really bad ports lately. Modding is great, but look at how DA:O turned out...I'm still waiting to play some great user made content.

I'm referring to the trend towards 3D gaming in general, not the 3DS.  I don't play handhelds.  I haven't since GameBoy Color.  Sony, for example, had the majority of their conference focused on 3D games, glasses and all.  Motion sickness will prevent me from even attempting them.

It's difficult to predict.
Alot of people had no idea gaming would go to mulicore or intrigrated chips.
When onlive was shown people were shocked, and still don't think it will work.
The pc user-base is so large, that it would be silly to say it would die off I think, it's not a dreamcast, it will always be around and is still very popular for gaming.

Nintendo just OWNED E3. I'm here right now, and it is AMAZING.

Sony's was... okay, Kevin Butler should of been hosting the conference the entire time. Microsoft's was a friggin' joke. Nintendo's? Dear god, the excitement in the air was palpable. The 3DS NEEDS TO BE IN MY HANDS RIGHT NOW. Kid Icarus? YES PLEASE.

And Kirby's Epic Yarn is AMAZING. I don't even care that Kirby can't eat people. HE'S MADE OUT OF YARN. AND HE TURNS INTO A RACECAR. AND THEN HE TURNS INTO A TANK. AND FOR HIS GROUNDPOUND HE TURNS INTO AN ANVIL.

I can't stay long. My laptops dying, so I'll just go ahead and say Nintendo has officially returned 100% to my good graces. They decimated the competition completely and utterly. I still can't get over it.

I don't think people are making the case that the PC gaming community is getting smaller, rather developers are putting more emphasis on consoles. Most cross-platform games are still developed with the console in mind. I think you even argued this yourself Rubbish Hero when you complained about how many modern cross platform games like Fallout 3 and Bioshock are hurt due to their console oriented gameplay mechanics.
Not that they don't deserve it(they do), but PC gamers will for the time being not be a priority for game developers.
Maybe once the majority of PC gamers decide to become PC consumers things will change but until then it's all about consoles.

The PC user base is large, it's the PC consumer base which is small due to the greed, arrogance, and apathy of most PC gamers.

The problem with PC gaming is that the hardware is upgraded constantly, and not everyone has the money(or desire to spend said money) to keep up.  Keeping games low-spec(like WoW/TOR are) is great for MMO's, since they can cash in on the larger subscriber base.  With the consoles, the tech is static for the generation.  When you put out a game for a console, you know that every owner of said console has the same level of processing power, memory, and graphics acceleration.

PC gaming seems to only be the focus of MMO's and RTS's nowadays.

I can't say I'm too thrilled about the Kirby yarn game. The graphics barely look better than the DS game. I was hoping for a 2.5 D style platformer like Kirby 64.

I hate this argument. I hate listening to console vs PC and I always keep fighting the stance of 'hurrdurr PC gaming is dying because all PC gamers are pirates/you constantly need top of the line hardware'. Before I tell you all to stop complaining during E3 of all times, because E3 is a time of fun, not sitting around and arguing around silly semantics, I will add my input of, asking how many PC games constantly need top of the line hardware? Crysis? Okay, but that's Crysis. It's half game, half tech demo. Just because you need to spend exorbiant amounts of money to run it smoothly at a high setting, it doesn't mean every PC game reflects that. PC developers aren't stupid. They want to create a product that can survive in today's market. That is, trying to reach out to every configuration they possibly can. As in, strike a graphical balance to suit both people who want to play at 60 FPS and the people who upgrade very infrequently, so most PC exclusive games don't in fact, seek to push the envelope in terms of processing and graphical power.

And the second thing? The console you're using? It's running on a baseline, it's got outdated hardware on it. Chances are if you can afford similar hardware parts (which come down dramatically in a short amount of time, a plus about the rapidly evolving nature of PC games), then you can run a multiplatform game. And if you've got something stronger than an Xbox, well, I can tell you there's nothing stopping you from running it as far as it can go bar shoddy porting jobs (which are sadly all too common).

And finally? PC gaming is a niche audience. It's not a fact people like to admit. But we PC gamers need to remember we are solely a minority in the gaming environment. We're enthusiasts, who prefer building our own gaming rigs to buying something someone else made, and that just doesn't appeal to most people. It's an entry barrier, so as such, sales should naturally be far lower, at least not comparable to console equivalents. And that's that. Piracy is a huge issue, but it's hardly the cancer that's killing PC gaming.

With that said, would y'all kindly shut up now? E3 is about fun, soaking in the excitement of different announcements and companies coming together to blow people's minds. Leave serious business out of it. At least for a week.

Obviously most PC games do not need top of the line hardware since most PC games are cross platform games developed with the console in mind. PC games are an afterthought for most developers. PC gaming is not where the money comes from so obviously most developers don't give a damn since contrary to popular belief game development is a business not a charity.

I don't really care about console VS PC. I compare games, not platforms. What I do resent though is PC gamers blaming consoles for the dumbing down of games when it is really their own damn fault.

Anyways, since I am intent on further distancing ourselves away from silly debates that have no place here, may I approach you gentlemen with some on-floor videos.

Kirby's Epic Yarn (which is amazing), LoZ: Skyward Sword (which is also amazing) and then some Metroid: Other M which is - you guessed it, amazing.

Ah yes Other M I have been looking forward to that game since it had been announced, the announced shifting between playing a side scroller and awesome 3D shooter really pushed me towards buying it <3

I'm so excited for Other M. It reminds me so much of the original metroids. Plus, story is never a bad thing. So far I've loved nintendo and Son'y conferences. Microsofts was cool, but not quite as great. I can't believe how many games nintendo is bringing back, some people may complain that nintendo is lazy and unoriginal but who cares? the games will be fun. Oh and Little Big Planet 2 looks to be a masterpiece like the first one, I seriously can't wait.

I was kind of wierded out by the graphics for the new Zelda, it's the Twilight Princess link mixed in with the Wind Waker. It might take some getting used to, I'm sure it will grow on me like the Wind Waker did.

I'm not sure what to make of SWTOR. I'm looking forward to story based mmo but seeing that all the classes being sorted into the typical "tank" healer" dps" stereotypes is off-putting. this is why I quit Wow, because of simple streamlined tactics like those. I really hope it's not a trinity based game, that would ruin it for me.
