Twitter update:

Same Sex Romances confirmed for ME3 by Casey Hudson, executive Producer of Mass Effect

-------------------

So, you clicked on this topic and you maybe be thinking, "what is Fight for the Love?"  Well, it's a fan group that wants a few more choices in the romance region of the game.  What does this mean?  It just means we'd like for some same-sex romances to be open, by way for a ME2 DLC or ME3.

And so now maybe you're thinking, “Shepard isn’t a fruit” or maybe “why do you guys keep making a new topic.  Stop spamming and drop it.”  If these are one of the two thoughts that run through your brain before you clicked and opened this topic, continue reading...

PLEASE DON'T GET OFF TOPIC. D=

FAQ:

  • What the HMMM is this?
Fight for the Love is a fan group of which would like same-sex romances implemented in the game by way of DLC for ME2 or ME3.  We're kindly known as THOSE PEOPLE.  We come in peace honestly and if you can carry on a nice not heated debate we all most certainly up for it.

To learn more or join click on my user bar.
  • Why are you guys on the 5th topic or why is this the Nth topic of this kind on the first page? This is spam.
The previous threads were closed due to trolling, fighting, length and a brief memorandum issued by Mr. Stanley Woo.

    Mr. Woo posted:
The last five pages (at least) are full of bickering, personal attacks, and politics. This topic gets a brief moratorium until people can learn to a) debate like civil, mature individuals, and B) not feed the trolls.

As always, I'm available for questions and concerns, but come on, people. You seemed to have a great community and discussion going on in here, supporting each other, bringing up some good points. And you let one person with an opposing view destroy the thread? Take a breather, then let me know when y'all think you can start a new thread without the hate against haters. Thank you.
    From: http://social.biowar...ndex/1100184/71

Note: He told us to, "Take a breather, then let me know when y'all think you can start a new thread without the hate against haters. Thank you." Not cease and desist with any threads of this kind.  We received his "blessing" per se to start this thread so please no "This is spam," or "You're beating a dead horse," comments.

The purpose of this thread is to get other people's opinions. We want to know why people *don't* want the option so that we can try to find a solution that is agreeable to their desires as well as our own. We all want the game to be the best, so why not discuss ways to make the game more enjoyable for everyone?  Please keep political and social norms out of your post.

Keep in mind we're in no way affiliated to the other same-sex topics.  We may want the same things, but we're going about it a different way.
  • Shepard isn’t a fruit.  Why are you trying to force this on me?
No, Shepard is NOT a fruit, but that doesn’t mean he/she can’t like someone of the same-sex.  All most of us want is a decent meaningful relationship that isn’t tacked on.  Some of our ideas include colored font so that you can’t accidentally have your Shepard flirt someone you don’t want to and choosing a crush or sexual orientation on the import screen.  We’re also open to any other suggestions.
  • Why do you guys want this so bad?
    As tyddrwsau stated so eloquently:
Games are great, in contradistinction to other media, because of their interactive value. It is a rather different story - in that place where imagination fills in the silent voids - if Commander Shepard is relaxing with Kaidan after both heroes have learned to relax just a little with one another, or if the Commander has passed through Jack's brusque shell and confided in the real person underneath, or if the Commander fear's Thane's illness and ignominious death to disease more than the Reapers. In Mass Effect we play the Hero. Through relationships with the squad, and especially the romances, we gain access to those precious few moments where we can imagine Shepard the person, not Shepard "the-one-who-wields-the-gun."

For a gay player, used to being treated as a) nonexistent B) comic relief c) standard trope tragic figure  in various media, the option to play a really cool gay hero can be a really meaningful thing. For an open-minded player of other persuasions, it's another lens through which to imagine a parallel tale: "so THIS is what makes Shepard who he is, and THIS is what's important to him!"

It's about character development.  Who *is* Commander Shepard, and why do we care? The romance helps us to imagine. A same-sex romance broadens the possibilities, and all to the good.
  • Why are people so persistent that BioWare include gay and lesbian relationships in Mass Effect?
Two of the past 3 BioWare IPs have featured gay relationships. (Dragon Age:Origins and Jade Empire) All 3 have featured lesbian relationships.

BioWare has a pretty consistent history on including these types of relationships and that is why fans are asking for it to be included in Mass Effect as well. Most people just figured that Mass Effect would be no different so there was no discussion of the issue until now. Nobody is demanding that BioWare include gay and lesbian relationships in their games. People are just asking for consistency, which thus far they have not provided.

Between half a dozen new romance options on top of the three originals from the first game, it's clear that the developers spent quite a bit of time building the romantic subplots and character developments seamlessly into the grand ongoing saga of the series. To have such a varied and diverse ensemble of interesting romance options and yet not a single gay male in sight is incredibly conspicuous, and deserves reexamination.
  • Do you plan on turning everyone gay?
No, most of us would like the former bisexual squadmates to be reimplemented, this includes, Tali, Thane, Jack and Kaidan.  (someone correct me on that if I'm wrong)  We also wouldn't mind a BRAND NEW character.  Please share your thoughts in the poll or topic if you have any ideas for people.
  • I'll be uncomfortable if even gay behavior is even hinted at.
This is why this topic is here.  We'd like to here from both sides of fence.  How would you like to compromise this?  Some of our ideas include:
  • Have you choose your crush on the import screen so if you choose no one as your crush then no one of the same sex will hit on you.
  • Colored font that warns you if you click it you're be stepping into a relationship dialogue.  We're not hoping for a Zevran type character we just want a normal character of the same sex who's open to the idea of a same-sex relationship.
  • Have it implemented by way of DLC so if you don't DLC then there's no way you even know Thane, Tali or whomever is open to same-sex relationships.
View post below for more details.

reported.  If you'd like for us to elaborate on certain things or would like to carry on an educated discussion this is fine, but please no "Hell no" and that's it.

We’d like to keep a clean topic that stays away from politics and just focuses on how we’d like this implemented.  If you have any questions feel free to ask and vote in our polls.

  • Didn’t you read the article by Muzyka?

    Ray Muzyka said:
Here's how the games are different: Dragon Age is a first person narrative, where you're taking on an origin and a role, and you are that character at a fundamental level. It's fundamentally about defining your character, including those kinds of concepts. In Mass Effect it's more a third person narrative, where you have a pre-defined character who is who he is, or she is. But it's not a wide-open choice matrix. It's more choice on a tactical level with a pre-defined character. So they're different types of narratives, and that's intentional.

We're not saying that one approach is better than the other. In our previous games, as we did in Jade Empire, as we did in KOTOR, as we did in Baldur's Gate, and many games before and in the future, we enable those kinds of choices, whereas in Mass Effect it's more about Shepard as a defined character with certain approaches and worldviews, and that's just who he or she is. So we constrain the choice set somewhat, but enable more tactical choices and enable a deeper, richer personality, because it's more focused around defining one character, it's not as wide open. But that's by choice.

It's first person versus third person narrative, and the types of choices you get to make within that are related to that, whether you've got a pre-defined character or a wide-open character. Some of our games have been wide open, and some have been more constrained, and we'll probably continue both kinds of character development in the future.
    -From: http://xbox360.ign.c.../1066954p2.html

Yes we have and most of us have come to the conclusion that it made no sense to have a predefined character for everything BUT sexual orientation for male Shepards.  This would mean playing Mass Effect as anything other than default male "John" Shepard, the neutral/renegade Soldier, would be "wrong" and technically shouldn't be allowed.

Shepard is an N7 Operative and a Spectre. That's all that's set in stone. Everything else - sex, personality, personal history, sexuality - that's up to the player.
  • Wouldn't gay characters ruin sales?
No, based on Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect sales.  Dragon Age sold more in it's first 12 weeks and it contains same-sex romances for both sexes.
-http://tinyurl.com/y9nnqor;  Thanks to Jimmy Fury for the graph.
--Note: We did ME1 and Dragon Age: Origins because they both lacked a solid fanbase before coming out.

Suggestions:

Suggestion 1:

Jimmy Fury suggested:
Turn the picture frame into a DLC pack.

The way things work now, if you import an ME1 save game with an LI, Shep has a picture frame in his/her cabin with the LI's picture. So why not just tweak that same thing (so everything is already in the game, just needs a wee bit of coding) slightly to allow LI-less players to choose which picture is shown in the frame. It would work like this:

  • *Only* imported save games that have NO Love Interests and New Game players would be able to use the feature. That way it doesn't change, or even give the option to change, an existing romance storyline.
  • The picture can only be chosen once. Basically you get to the cabin, click the frame, and you get to choose between Kaidan, Ashley, Liara, and none.
  • Once you choose a picture the game adjusts slightly depending on who you picked. The romance-version of the Kaidan/Ashley/Liara conversations become available.
  • It includes some coding that makes two Mass Effect 2 squad mates (1 per Shepard gender) available for same sex infidelity. Thane and Tali probably since they were already planned.

Issues this would resolve:
-No retconning unless the player actively chooses to do it. Hence it being an optional DLC instead of a patch
  • Those uncomfortable with any sort of Same-Sex romance.
  • No patching of Mass Effect 1.
  • Those in favor of same-sex, get it and new game players get to experience the romance storyline of their choosing and carry it into Mass Effect 3.
  • It will not just be a "gay love DLC." It's for everyone.  Those in favor of same-sex romances, people who didn't play ME1, and people who just want to play a new Shepard, to try different paths.

Suggestion 2:

octoberfire suggested:
Just like paragon and renegade is color-coded we're hoping that romance for ALL romances are color coded to pink or some other various color, and possibly change script so you know when you're about to accidentally/purposely start a romance.  This would be similar to those of you who've played Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.

Issues this would resolve:

  • Stop the accidentally started romances (like I did with Jacob)
  • Simple coding because all that would need to be done is change the colored font for romance, if it's just those who are already in the game, but unlocked.
  • For both same-sex and straight romances.

Suggestion 3:

sw33ts suggested:
Have a new section on the import screen that allows you to choose your "crush."  This can be anyone may it be straight or gay/lesbian.  These are for those people who romanced someone of the opposite sex but now want to romance someone new or old.  First there will be your LI from ME1 which of course locked in place, if you have one, and then below it will be a drop down box for other romances.  This is where you can either choose that you had a crush on Tali as a female in ME1 or Garrus as a male in ME1.  This will also work if you choose to import a Shepard from ME2, so that if you romanced, for example Jacob in ME2 as a Female, but now want to romance Tali then you can choose Tali and the same options that were open for Male Shepard is now open for Female Shepard.  If you don't want to romance anyone of the same-sex in ME2/ME3 then just choose no one as your crush and no one of the same-sex will approach you.

Issues this would resolve:

  • No same-sex options if you choose no crush.

Suggestion 4:

Sabul suggested:
Have the conversation in ME2 you have with Mordin unlock future romances in Mass Effect 3.

Issues this would resolve:

  • If you shoot down Mordin you don't have to worry about it in the 3rd game
  • If you're already romancing someone regardless of sex you don't have to worry about it.

Suggestion 5:

Jimmy Fury suggested:
Since BioWare plans on making DLC to connect the ME: Redemption comics to ME2, that could be used to bring in an LI.
There are two ways it could be done:

  • Introduce 2 new characters (1 female, 1 male) through the expansion and have only 1 of them selectable as a squad member at the end of the side story. Both can then be LI's for either Shep gender. That way everyone benefits from a new squad member. The other character can then be brought in for ME3 as an non-romance squad member.

    Issues this would resolve:
    • Everyone benefits from a new potential LI, and being able to only recruit 1 of them means nobody need fear dialogue that makes them uncomfortable.
  • Same thing just use Liara and Feron. Liara is already a f/f option and Feron has already been introduced through the comics, so no new characters would need to be designed. Again, have only 1 of the 2 be recruitable as a squad member in ME2 and then bring the other in for ME3 and have them die thus making it more dramatic.

    Issues this would resolve:
    • Everyone benefits from a new potential LI, and being able to only recruit 1 of them means nobody need fear dialogue that makes them uncomfortable.

Suggestion 6:

Wittand25 suggested:
Shepard has a conversation with Joker (or some other NPC) and it can look like the following:
Joker: I notice you keep a professional distance to your crew. (If no romance in ME1 and 2)
or
Joker: I know that you are not opposed to fraternization. (If you import a Shepard with a romance)
Conversation Wheel:
Left side of the wheel:

  • right woman ( only possible female LIs for that Shepard get unlocked)
  • right man ( only possible male LIs get unlocked)
  • right person (all possible LIs get unlocked)
Right side of the wheel:
  • Mission more important (all possible LIs unlocked, plus paragon points)
  • None of your buisness (same as above but you get renegade points)

Issues this would resolve:
  • You don't have to worry about about seeing any type or straight or gay romance if you choose to not answer
Suggestion 7:

MarchWaltz suggested:
A new conversation wheel which has the choices of *FLIRT*/*ROMANCE* and it takes you to another dialog wheel, like how investigate does, but would be for romance only.

Issues this would resolve:

  • You would be able to get to know a crewmember without having to enter a relationship with them or flirt with them
Suggestion 8:

Just reimplement the former bisexual squad members by way of DLC.
Issues this would resolve:

  • No extra coding
  • Very easy
  • Someone for everyone. This includes, Ashley, Kaidan, Thane, Tali, and Jack.

So, we have the new thread!

I support this, 100%

More importantly, I think Male Shepard needs a turn. There should be a gay romance for MShep in ME3, without having to mod.

As well as a bar on the Hanar homeworld occupied by Drell Chippendales.

Actually that would be quite glorious.

At least we'd get away from the bars with Asari strippers everywhere.

I offer my support.

ME2 was pretty short when it comes to choice in many areas. Romances that can be enjoyed by all is only a plus in my books.

Definitely something that would improve my pretty low view of how ME3 might turn out. Will it happen though? Sadly, I doubt it.

It's bad enough I can't find romance in real life.......at least give it to me in MY GAMES! Geez I pay enough for them, maybe I should get a hooker instead of Me3.
