Probably it is because the father's species does influence the randomization process in a tangible way. Not in such a way that has been definitively quantified, but nonetheless the fact that ardat-yakshi can only be the offspring of a pureblood mother is an indicator that the father's species, and perhaps specific genome, plays a role in the daughter asari's genome.Fancando wrote...
But how can they be divided into purebloods and non purebloods if the "father" species gives so little, something genetic must pass I mean?Siansonea II wrote...

And The Asari are awesome.
But they should take features from the "father" species like variation of blue and other small or great physical details, hair from humans, pointier head tendrils from Turians, size from Krogans, a more slender physique from Salarians and so on....
But logically, the Asari genome can't be so dominant as to be strtonger than every feature of the "Father" species.
The asari don't actually get genes from the father species. The melding process simply helps them randomize a pure asari genome. Possibly the father species might influence the randomization process to some extent, but it wouldn't introduce non-asari traits like hair and such.
But the discussion of asari reproduction is rather tangential to the discussion. Asari are female, because they give birth to baby asari. They are not hermaphroditic, their reproduction process simply obviates the need for an entire subtype to exist solely to fertilize the eggs of the base type. When you think about it, a male-female binary is rather ineffecient from a biological standpoint. It is much more efficient to have every member of the species capable of reproducing itself directly, and contribute to the reproduction of other individuals.
On topic, the asari technicalities are a bit of a copout, and it would be much better, in my opinion, if same-sex content was implemented with a HUMAN partner.

I have my own theory about Ardat-Yakshi and asari genetics, involving Samara as an AY-gene carrier, but I'm not going to get in to it, because asari genetics. 'Nuff said.

It would be interesting to see the proportion of romances in ME2 for each available partner (if this data is collected), just to see whether alien options were preferred over humans and vice versa. Given that femShep and maleShep have already had 2-3 human romance options, it would make sense to have a human partner available for s/s.

If humans can be gay or bi in real life, why can't they be so in a fictional world?

Yeah, this always irked me. When Bioware justified it by saying that Shep was a predefined character and her/his sexuality was one of the predefined traits, I was agasp. If Shep can have 3 different backgrounds, 3 different reputations, several different classes, different appearances, and completely different choices/actions (not to mention male or female)... why is sexuality not defined by the player? Not to mention, they had the alternate dialog recorded for the ME1 romances. So, that would lead one to believe that at some point they had planned to leave those s/s options in.
Their explanation felt ingenuine and was poor justification. It just doesn't make sense.
This point has already been made and remade in this forum, I'm sure. But, it does make me feel better that so many people are surprised and confused by Bioware's choice.

So, I've never modded any games, but I was wondering how to mod my Xbox 360 version of ME1 to allow my maleshep to romance kaiden and my femshep to romance ashley. I've seen the convos on youTube and I'm a bit of a completionist, so I want to have one playthru with a gay male shep and one with a gay female (tho, Liara technically counts). I also want it to be importable to ME2 (and therefore eventually ME3, of course).
Can anyone help me out?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found out sorta how to do it and, of course, Microsoft will vaporize my warranty if I do. Yet another reason to buy it on PC.
ediT 2: yay, found out how to do it WITHOUT making Microsoft mad.

And how would the bi mode mod work exactly? I would like my Engineer Femshep to hit on Tali at some point.
I'm aware of at least two modifications. One requires modifying the save-game file so that the game is tricked into opening up romances to opposite-gendered characters. I'm not sure if you'd be able to romance two characters of different genders in the same playthrough using this method. It appears to be easier on PC than consoles, but I'm sure there's plenty of info on the web somewhere.
Another way involves overriding or removing the gender flags for all romances, so that maleShep/femShep can romance any of the available characters (i.e. 6 not counting Samara/Morinth/Kelly). I don't think this mod was ever released, and details are sketchy.

I rather like the idea of color coding. This would have been especially helpful in ME1 where I accidentally had everyone fall in love with my shep. whoops. I think this would really help everyone out (gay, bi, or straight romances). Just putting in my vote. Speaking of which, is there a poll on this somewhere?octoberfire suggested:
Just like paragon and renegade is color-coded we're hoping that romance for ALL romances are color coded to pink or some other various color, and possibly change script so you know when you're about to accidentally/purposely start a romance. This would be similar to those of you who've played Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
Issues this would resolve:
- Stop the accidentally started romances (like I did with Jacob)
- Simple coding because all that would need to be done is change the colored font for romance, if it's just those who are already in the game, but unlocked.
- For both same-sex and straight romances.

Anything that makes romances clearer and easier is good. Given that Bioware are (supposedly) considering a new icon-based system for Dragon Age 2, it seems they're aware of some of the problems caused by some of the more ambiguous romance conversation options. I had similar issues in the first game with Liara/Ashley jumping on me.

Colour coding--for paragon/renengade choices on the left-hand side of the dialogue wheel--already exists in the ME universe, but I think if a pink colour was added for a romance dialogue and the regular colour for the other normal choices, it would stop ninja romances.
