I, on
the other hand, completely understand if it had to do with Meer's
reluctance. When he agreed to do Shepard's voice, they probably didn't
mention to him right away that he would be doing romance dialogue with
Raphael Sbarge. It's quite possible that as he did hundreds of lines for
Shepard, he felt like he knew who this character was and what were the
definining limits of his personality. And when he was told about the
Kaidan romance, he might have felt like this is not the man Shepard is.

Well,
this is all just wild speculation, but I've always thought it was Meer
who sabotaged that particular feature in the game.

On
second thought, this is probably false, as most videogame voice actors
are struggling and take whatever jobs they can get.  Since this was a
big job that I assumed payed well and guaranteed three games worth of
work, there's no way Meer would refuse to do anything if he thought he
might lose the job.

What about the model? Could he have not
wanted his likeness in a m/m romance? It's
doubtful though. *shrug*

But I think Meer has gotten a lot better at it though. LotSB and Genesis are great examples of him displaying emotion in a non-creepy way.

Now, if they could only get rid of that horrible rapeface Shepard puts on when talking to Miranda...

Actually he sounds...bored in Genesis like he's reading from Cue cards. Not that I blame him. I'd be bored too.

LoTSB though yes. He has emotion. Too bad it's a railroaded emotion.

I like the rapeface. If only for sheer hilarity.

Yes yes and yes.

Actually, now that I watched the video again, Meer sounds outright hilarious when he says "Kaidan, I don't think I've had the pleasure of you serving under me." So you're probably right.

Any (outwardly) homophobic model probably wouldn't find much work due to the abundance of gay men in the industry.

It's like a racist working in a minority center. It just isn't going to work out well. Too much hostility.

So even if he didn't want his image used in such a manner I'm willing to bet he'd have kept it to himself. And if he was extremely homophic I don't think he'd have been a model so long.

Plus they could've used someone else. They didn't have to use Vanderloo.

I think Shepard's model wasn't Meer's "likeness" per se.  Unless Meer himself was scanned in it doesn't count.

I was meaning Mark Vanderloo. But, I'm inclined to agree with Ryzaki anyway. Moot point.

Anyway, while I'm here, just want to say I absolutely support same sex romances in ME3.

It's the wide, unblinking eyes that always get me.  I know it's just a game, but each time I see that I watch him closely to make sure he doesn't try to cut off my skin and wear it around.   It would probably be the most frightening game ever if they put in a low probability chance that Shep briefly turned his head to stare at the screen.

Completely off topic but, since we're kinda discussing Shepard, does anyone else have a problem with using a "custom face" with MaleShep ? I have Meer's voice+Vanderloo's looks so imprinted in my mind that I can't help but cringe a little I see Meer's voice coming out of a custom Shep face, it just feels completely off to me XD

Nope. Heck my Custom Shep has become so canon to me that I'm using a default Shep for a change I can't stop thinking: "That's not my Shep...who is this dude?"

The go: "Oh wait...default. ...Yeah I'm not doing this again."

Though I see where you're coming from with the cringing.

Though tis is also my uncanon DudeShepxKaidan playthrough.

I wonder if it'll completely crash my game when I import him into ME3. Either that or poor Kaidan will think he's a woman again.

Default Man Shepard scared the absolute hell out of me so I painstankingly created my own. My problem is the opposite of yours. I cringe whenever I see default Man Shepard in any youtube videos/images/whatever.

I'm very late to this thread but wanted to reply.

So I just finished Mass Effect 1 using that SetGender trick so I could romance Kaiden as a male shephard. Sometimes my male Shephard throughout the game had a female voice, and everyone referred to him as "ma'am" or "she" but for the most part the male voice dialogue worked. There were even quite a few spoken lines by Male-Shephard with Kaiden throughout the Romance subplot that I don't think make any sense if there wasn't supposed to ever be a romance between them.

I just started Mass Effect 2 and I think most things got ported through - I haven't met up with Kaiden yet to see if he responds to me in any specific way due to the Romance. But in Mass Effect 2 the characters are correctly referring to me as a "him" so I'm not sure if the SetGender trick carried over from ME1 or if in ME2 I'm now considered "male" by the game.

It would be nice if those of us that cheated our ways into a Kaiden male romance in ME 1 could just have that continued with correct gendered dialogue and cutscenes in ME 3.

I already saw some videos on YouTube where it appears that Male-Shep and Kaiden's romance continued with Kaiden as they hug and Kaiden comments that he loved him. Someone said that Male-Shep's dialogue is the same as it would be with Ashley though, but either way it at least appears to be able to continue in ME2.   Also I saw videos with other M-M romances for the new romances that seemed to work so maybe they did add Same Sex romance secretively for those who used SetGender in ME1.

Hopefully they eitehr add in a new romance for MaleShep in ME3 or let people continue their Kaiden one.

I support it. Being gay myself and having some weird attraction to Garrus :alien::wub:..... Don't feel like playing a female character that I don't even like to play through just for some unsatisfying straight sex scene. Doesn't Bioware usually put some kind of lesbian option in all their games? Kind of perverted if they are just a bunch of guys who made it cause they think it's hawt, and stupid if they will do that and then turn gays down. It's inconsistent and it really gets on my nerves. I LOVE BioWare.... I am currently replaying KotOR and soon Mass Effect 1/2, and maybe even Jade Empire. You guys hold my favorite games, just show me some love back... I love you... LOVE!!

I'd like to stop and pick at the people who just say flat out "I don't support it". Why not? You don't have to be gay. That's probably what you are afraid of. You will end up doing the romance secretly and getting all hot from it and POP your bubble of denial and ignorance is gone. "OH NO IM GAY NOW! MASS EFFECT TURNED ME GAY!!!"... BioWare could put that as part of character creation (Gender: M/F; Preference: M/F). No accidental flirting, no turning you gay or giving you sinful wood  OH LORD JESUS HELP ME MY SOUL WILL BURN FOREVER!!.... Why go denying people their own kind of fun just because they aren't like you? Get over yourself, or your bible or whatever causes you to be so selfish.

Garrus is straight.  sorry.

I'm sure you've been atracted to people without it being mutual.  I'm sure you've encountered situations where those people were straight.

personaly, I will have no issue whatsoever if they add in gay characters, complete with rejection towards straight Shepards of uncompatable sexuality.  heck I don't even think that prior selection of sexuality is needed, just give us a variety of conversation options that will allow us to get to know the characters without romancing them (for example, my femshep had an option of offering Garrus to have a tie breaker OR to spar with him, though I wish there was more dialogue after I picked the sparing option)

I personaly, would be very pissed off if developers started retconing characters just to satisfy the notions of political correctness.

Once again, I'd like to point out the fact that you can have sex with lizard-bird person with steel bones, a space chicken with polio and a bucket on her head, and likely get sick or die in the process, but not even so much as look at somebody of the same sex romantically or lustfully.

And as far as alien romances, I think a bigger boundary would be the fact that they're a different species rather than a different gender. I think that if you saw a person in one of those weird Maury Show marriages to a dog of the same sex, I'm sure that you wouldn't think of that as a gay relationship before an interspecies one.

Ryzaki was talking about the model industry. The Default Shepard face is done by Mike Vanderloo, a male model. Some people believe that he didn't want to be associated with homosexuality because of the game (even though he works in an industry which is probably fueled more by gay men than straight women), which would mean he has a job working with people that he has a prejudice against. That like hating children but teaching elementary school, if that helps any.

If you want romance, go to Eharmony.com...just sayin
though

And last I checked, that was a heterosexual only dating service :pinched:

Do you know anything about the fashion industry and models?

I mean that post was so off base it's not even funny. It's like you didn't even bother to read before typing.

I mean...is that what's called an ad hom?
