While he should of course be gay he fits much better as a kind of tough guy, not some effeminate wannabe girl no offense to those though:P)
Hendel Mitra.
Tough-as-nails badass Vanguard.
Gay as a rainbow-coloured unicorn.
Why isn't he a companion in ME3?
I can think of a few reasons, not that I'd necessarily be against it:
- Due to the plot of the novel Ascension, which I won't spoil, he's 'otherwise occupied' (story-wise) for a fair while. This isn't to say he couldn't be recalled from where he is, but realistically his mission (and the person he's protecting) is important.
- The vast, vast majority of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 players will have never heard of the books, let alone remember Hendel Mitra. I've seen similar threads argue for the inclusion of Kahlee Sanders, for example, as a sqjuadmate, and I'm skeptical for the same reasons as I'd be for Hendel. Unless he was introduced properly, players who hadn't read the books would be mightily confused.
- Hendel is (as far as we've been told/shown) not interested in females at all. Not that I wouldn't love to see a solely-gay romance interest in ME3, but for reasons of resources I'd paint it as highly unlikely. It's easier, from a development perspective, to integrate the m/m romance with a character who can also be romanced by female player-characters. As David Gaider has observed, it doesn't make much sense to create content solely for what is (especially in a game like ME3, I'd wager) a minority of your audience. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a 'gay as a rainbow unicorn' m/m option, but there are (unfortunately) rather solid boundaries to resources and what the Bioware team can justify investing. Their justification may be valid, or it might not be - but that's the best we can argue for.
Again: I rather like Mitra as a character, and I think he'd be an amazing squadmate if written correctly - but I can't really see him being a realistic option for ME3. Hopefully he'll pop up in some future novel.
