oof, bio, choosing whether you want the gay or not in your game at the beginning is such a bad idea (this is what started that unfortunate thread in the DA2 forums and the subsequent media attention, remember? The guy asking for a 'no homos' button). If it's going to be there, it should be there alongside all other romance content, on an equal footing. Keep it simple ... romances done all in exactly the same way, with some (or all, I woulnd't complain) available regardless of the gender you choose for your Shep (just like in DA2).

Oh well well you put it that way - i guess that makes sense Posted Image

*hugs bio*

It's okay hun. I know you mean well ;)

I think the way DA2 implemented same-sex content was fine. Yes it's rather statistically improbable that four of the seven people you're hanging out with are bisexual, but it could happen (and who knows, maybe bisexuality is just more common amongst elves, human mages and sea captains). The fact that every player gets two LI options of each gender to choose from is much more of a valuable contribution to the game than any consideration of conforming to someone's arbitrary idea of statistical incidence of the bisexual demographic. Of course there will be legions of bratty entitled boys who think they should have had more than two chicks to choose from, and that somehow leaving the programming open to a Hawke of either gender for some characters stole precious resources away from the creation of the DA2 equivalent of Tali, but I think they're just being entitled brats.

Wow! He looks totally fabulous as Susanna.

So is Mark Meer gay? Just wondering, I wouldn't care if he was or not.

Think he's got a wife. Did you wonder because that picture made you feel funny? It's ok if it did, I won't judge you.

LMAO! I call it the Tim Curry effect. Say what you want but Dr.Frankenfurter had killer legs.

It still freaks me out that Tim Curry can go from playing Frankenfurter to playing the Lord Of Darkness in Legend.

Oh the lulz.

On topic, I was just wondering the proportion of people who go after in-game romances based on their real life sexual orientation. For example, I've only done one same-sex romance in a game for non-completionist reasons. It just coincidentally happens that in my case the characters I'm not that fond of are usually the same-sex romance (Liara, Zevran, Leliana, Skye, Juhani, the list goes on into other games) and generally just aren't my cup of tea. I don't count Kelly because I just "have dinner" with her to get her to feed my fish. I'm too forgetful otherwise. However, I often end up pursuing heterosexual romances, and not just because its the only one available. The bisexual characters I've encountered in RPGs that you could romance, I found myself more often than not doing so with a heterosexual relationship. Though whereas I'm like that, I have a friend, straight male, who pursues the same-sex romance as often if not more often than the straight romance. So I was just wondering what the demographic probably looks like of straight gamers who do straight or gay romances, vice versa.

Edit: Sounds like the job for a poll.

Edit edit: Imagine that guy dressed like that on a pole :D

I'm a heterosexual female (and old), and my answer to such a poll is "all of the above". I'm a role-player, so I like to create different characters with a whole different set of variables. I play all the romance options that are available, as well as pursuing no romance for some characters. As many different types of characters that I can make, I will make. I am not a player who plays the same character over and over. Paragons, Renegades, same-sex, opposite-sex, human-centric, alien-centric, whatever point of view I can explore through a character, I will, as I enjoy seeing different outcomes for the various situations that arise in the game.

I am a heterosexual male and my Canon-Shepard is a lesbian. My first ever playthrough was on the Xbox, and I had a very generic time with ManShep and Ashley. But as I explored the avenues of the PC Master Race later on, I had grown as an individual and I tried out FemShep and, well, basically, I personally liked Hale's perfomance moar.

And as I like to play pretend and think I know something about actual writing, the whole "forbidden romance" thing kind of got to me. I just find making a character gay, especially the main character hell-bent on saving the world, is ground-breaking territory and it makes the Shepard a lot more "unique". I don't know how to properly explain it at this hour right before heading to bed, but it's different, and it made me think.
I'd actually go as far as to say I evolved as a human being. Pokémon style.

In Dragon Age 2, I continued my trend of lesbianity, because I was sceptical to male voice acting after Mass Effect and fell in love with Merrill... also due to her voice actress. Welsh. Yum.
Keep in mind that I didn't hype DA2 at all, and I hadn't done any research whatsoever. I still intend to give ManHawke a try and show Anders some love, but for now my heterosexual female friend convinced me to try Isabela, because of some resemblance to a writing-assignment-thingy she had once.

Long story short, I think that by defining someone's sexuality, you're allowed to delve further into their psyche and explore them, as well as your own. I like to think that I turned into a better person because of this "exposure".

And I'm one of those boring folks who keep to being paragon. I essentially remake the same character over and over once I find my canon one. It just wouldn't feel the same way if I'd alter them too much. I need my 'oomph'.
It's why I never get anywhere with my ManShep Renegade. D;

PS-EDIT: No offense to Mark Meer! I love the guy. Major props to him. I think I just get his voice mixed up with ManShep's default face in my brain and argh.

PPS. No offense to the model for ManShep's face! It's just your smile! I mean... oh, gawd, stop it!

Polls done. It only took me almost an hour.

For straight, male gamers:
http://social.biowar...16/polls/18007/

For straight, female gamers:
http://social.biowar...16/polls/18008/

For gay/bisexual male gamers:
http://social.biowar...16/polls/18009/

For lesbian/bisexual gamers:
http://social.biowar...16/polls/18010/

I realize just now that I probably shouldn't have lumped gay and bisexual together, but whats done is done.

@Cootie -- ngl, your post made me go all warm and fuzzy. I think sometimes people can underestimate the ways in which others can interact with a game. I mean heck, it's just a game, right? Nuh-uh. Games are things we experience and connect with (okay, perhaps not all games, I'm clearly talking about rpgs and BW in particular here) ... and there is no reason why they can't affect us just as much as a book or a film or a play. Of course, we can also overthink them -- I also just like killing things and making them asplode occasionally ;-)

Anyway, if we're doing a roll-call here, I'm never really sure what to say. I'm female, I have some gender 'things' I'm always trying to get my head around. I don't feel the labels straight, bi or gay fit me particularly well since with me it's kind of fluid, although I'm in a long term relationship (married in fact) to a dude. I identify best with male characters in rpgs, possibly because the rpg format allows me to play out parts of me I can't in real life. That said, I also play female characters as and when I fancy, and have a few fSheps under my belt. mShep is my canon though. I've yet to play a fHawke. I'm not entirely sure I will, for a while at least. Because OMG I don't need to in order to experience the kind of role-play and relationships that fit best with who I am. Because I have a choice. And I freaking love the DA2 team so much for that. Really.

Anyway, there you go.

I'll leave the wall of texting to Catabuca from now on. Uh-huh. Totally.

I feel like this is a point I have to make as well. I often have trouble identifying with men in RPGs, as I have never been a very... manly man.
I'm a tiny not-man-bro-dude-man-dawg.

The point I'm trying to make is that if our experience is so much richer because we can play as the gender we prefer, I can't possibly imagine what it must be like to finally be able to relate to a homosexual or bisexual player character.

I'd give anything... almost anything... or, like... a lot, to be the man (or woman, I'm not picky)  who approved of, or came up with the idea of letting everyone be romancable by either gender in DA2. To know that you may have enriched so many experiences and pushed the envelope when it comes to what you can and cannot do in the gaming medium, yeah, it must be nice.
Warm and fuzzy.

PS. I apologise for being awful at writing. I'm really tired and going to bed nauw. Darned addictive thread.

Yeah I have to agree, I prefer playing as a female character myself has beeen good for me when good writers are involved. Role-playing is a great way to take a walk in somebody else's shoes. Me being a man, I don't face much rampant sexism that women do. Not many commercials, tv shows, etc exploit men as sex objects. The construction workers eating lunch on the steel beam don't judge every man that walks by, very loudly and callously. Its interesting to see that side, and how when I can do "x" action as a male its normal, but doing "x" as a female creates one huge big deal.
I've faced racial discrimination, despite being white, but playing say the elf or dwarf in Dragon Age Origins is a great way to see it from the other side if say you're the white majority, and have never had the cards stacked against you. I've never really seen sexual orientation have any affect on how people react to you, the player, in a game. Maybe a few other character, NPCs, but never the player. Aside from the weird look you get from Alistair or whatever, to which he says "Hey hey, I'm not being judgemental. Just didn't know that was your cup of tea", there really isn't anything, or at least that I'm aware of, so that would be another interesting standpoint to bring up. Also haven't really seen this portrayed in groups like immigrants either. You're sitting on a goldmine BioWare, just saying
