I honestly don't see why a Same sex romance option isn't feasible in the form of DLC.

Um, it was not a part of the main plot.
DLC is not supposed to be a part of the main storyline. To suddenly introduce a gay romance option would rather cheapen both the concept of a gay romance option and the game as a whole. Plus the idea of DLC.

I think you'd actually want a love story, not just a sex scene. Which is all what the DLC would be.

Be that as it may, unless you'd like to wait until ME3, DLC is probably the only way to (re?)introduce same-sex romance into ME2, or allow us to carry forward an original Mass Effect romance (Ash/Kaidan) into the second and third games (without modifying the game, obviously). I don't particularly like it either, but if it will make available s/s romancse for ME2, I'm all for it. And it's perfectly possible to introduce extra dialogue (a 'love story') via DLC - it would require some extra effort by Bioware, obviously, and probably a hefty pricetag for the download. But it's not impossible.

This has really made me wonder things: what does Shepards gender matter to Garrus or Thane, they are not human? How do we know what kind of "sexual code" these other species have? By Bioware making them so damn HUMAN. What kind of genitals Garrus has? Maybe he has no penis at all? Why would Garrus give a damn what genre Shepard is, Shepard is not Turian? And Drells, Thane was married and has a son, but Drells could be ALL bisexual by nature. This all somewhat annoyis me. Bioware had a perfect opportunity in ME-universe to widen up some bounderies, but no, I have to watch Samaras tacky suit but I can't tap Thane if my char is male. I'm sure Thane wouldn't mind :(

When it comes to other species I see no reason to not let them be open to both genres to romance. I can't see a reason why they would be flagged as beeing straight, gay, or bi. They are other species. They might not even have the word "gay". I dislike this human behavior they are forced into.

If the world was gay then none of us would be here.

You seem to enjoy the Dragon Age games well enough, so it can't be that much of a bother.

Yes, I enjoyed DA. NO, I hated Zevran. I tried to be cool with him and turn him down nicely but no he keeps on trying so now *DA Spoiler?* I cut his throat when I meet him for the first time. I don't like having some elf getting pissed off at me just because I want to listen to his stories but I don't want to sleep in his tent. I don't need someone in ME where I either shoot on site or leave in my ship and pretend they aren't there because I don't want to listen to them because after I turn them down they don't seem to understand what No means.

Not trying to insult anyone or any group of people, but stating a fact that I think this game is made by straight people. Gay men are less likely to be game developers because according to study, their minds are like straight women. I'm not pulling this out of thin air, so I'll show the proof-

Gay Men, Straight Women Have Similar Brains

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter
Monday, June 16, 2008 12:00 AM

MONDAY, June 16 (HealthDay News) - MRI and PET scan studies are showing remarkable similarities between the brains of gay men and straight women, and between those of lesbians and straight men.
For example, the brains of straight men and of gay women share certain common features: both are slightly asymmetric, with the right hemisphere larger than the left, say the Swedish researchers.
On the other hand, the brains of gay men and straight women are both symmetrical.
Similar trends emerged when scientists tracked connectivity in the amygdala, the region of the brain involved in emotional learning and in activating the fight-or-flight response. They noted strong similarities between gay men and straight women, and lesbians and straight men.
The findings are published in the current issue of theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"This is a very interesting study demonstrating a possible neurobiological relationship in brain size between gay men and straight women," said Paul Sanberg, distinguished professor of neurosurgery and director of the University of South Florida Center for Aging and Brain Repair in Tampa.
"I do think this is pointing to some type of neurobiological underpinning [to sexual orientation]," added Keith A. Young, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in Waco. He was not involved in the study.
"It's hard to know if that's related to genes, or what might happen in the womb -- I think those are the two primary options," said Young, who is also co-director of the Central Texas Veterans' Health Care System Neuropsychiatry Research Program in Temple. "How do those affect early brain development, and how might either genes or exposure to hormones in the womb change the trajectory of the development of emotional processing centers?"
The neurobiology of sexual orientation remains a controversial topic. Some research suggests that the brain activity of homosexual individuals in areas unrelated to sex mirror brain activity in straight individuals of the opposite sex. And certain psychological studies have revealed differences in how men and women use the brain's different hemispheres for verbal tasks, for example.
For this study, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm first performed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 90 participants -- 25 heterosexual men and an equal number of heterosexual women, plus 20 homosexual men and 20 homosexual women.
The right hemispheres of straight men and gay women were found to be bigger than the left, while the respective volume of these two cerebral hemispheres were about the same in gay men and straight women.
Fifty of the original participants also underwent positron emission tomography (PET) measurements of blood flow to the brain, designed to analyze connections between the right and left amygdalas. PET scans were performed both while the participants were resting and while they were smelling unscented air.
Here again, lesbians appeared to react more like straight men, while gay men were more like straight women.
According to the authors, fight-or-flight reactions -- controlled in part by the amygdala -- are more common in men than in women.
The differences, which werenotrelated to sexual attraction, could be due to environmental effects, genetics or the influence of sex hormones, the study authors stated.
Although some sex differences in brain size are visible at birth, the brain continues to develop as the child matures, meaning that environmental factors could also play a role.
The current wisdom regarding genetics and sexual orientation posits that genes may play a role in male homosexuality but not in female homosexuality, the researchers said.
Experts have also speculated that exposure to sex hormones prenatally influence sexual preference. Male rhesus monkeys have more androgen (a male sex hormone) receptors in the right side of the brain, while females have an equal distribution of receptors for the hormone.
And brain asymmetry in male rats is established by early exposure to androgens. Symmetry in female brain hemispheres can be reversed by removing the ovaries soon after birth.
This study does little to clarify the reasons behind the differences, the researchers added, although it certainly does add to the debate.
More information
There's more on how the brain works at The Franklin Institute.

I like your bear trap metaphor. Very apt...

Liara is definitely persistent, if you look at the (now cut) dialogue/video at the start of this thread it took Shepard to say "I'm only interested in men" for her to back off - and even then she had a long-winded reply about not understanding humans or something.

Despite this happening in game, I don't see any hetero-only supporters campaigning and boycotting the Mass Effect series over this.  I know plenty of straight women who politey declined Liara's advances and moved on to enjoy the rest of the game.  I don't understand why S/S can't be implemented and again you can just decline a romance.  Screw being uncomfortable.  There are some choices in game I'd rather not do but I don't go on here and complain and start bashing people.

What I don't get is why people come in and say "I don't get it".

Really? You really don't understand why some people would want character options that might more closely parallel their own experiences? Or that people might want to play something other than a cardboard cutout version of themselves? You REALLY don't understand that. Sigh.

This shows a lack of any sort of ability to put oneself in another person's shoes. That ability is called empathy. If you don't have it, go out and get it.

Of course, I'm sure the majority of these people are 13-year-old boys who are freaked out by Gay Homosexuals OMG! Hopefully time and better video games will teach them to Live And Let Live.

More Options Are Always Better. More Options Takes Nothing Away From Your Game.

Not insulting anybody or any group of people. I think my Shepard personally doesn't want bi squadmates of the same gender checking out his rear the whole time playing the game.

And if homosexuals try to boycott over this, well, more power to them.

I believe you may be over-exaggerating just a little bit. The love interests already in the game do not check out your but all day. I didn't want Tali as a love interest as I felt  it was a bit... silly but do you know what I did? I just declined her request when she asked and then I ran off with Miranda. I did not have the feeling that she was checking out my Shepard's "rear the whole time playing the game."e

I must also be unaware of any animation that Bioware inserted where LI's heads follow your Shepard's behind as you walk by. Image IPB

Agreed, flaming and generalizing people based upon their different views doesn't get you anywhere. Though I don't know if there's an "anywhere" to be going in the first place. Maybe showing this as a petition or vote thing? I'm not really sure.

That's funny because they're always behind Shepard.

They probably turn their heads when you aren't looking so you don't catch them on the act.

You did read your own sig, right ?
Petition is off limits and if you are a member of the group in your signature you should be well aware about this poll, it was part of your group´s description before the group went private

Of course I know what my sig says. I was just stating that I don't know where this thread is going.

And I think a better poll question would be how many players are actually homosexuals who would make use of said feature.

Remember that some very successful game developers / producers are female. Assassin´s Creed comes to my mind, and I´m sure BioWare has female employees too (even among the writers!!!!) though, admittedly, I do not kno if these are in leading positions.

No, my point was that BioWare should cater to the majority and maximize profits to keep the game well-funded for future updates. Straight women are in the majority. Gay men, however, aren't, and many straight men (who are in the majority as well) unfortunately find it repulsive. Still, there's profit to be made catering to the majority.

Now, again, I'm just reminding people to stay on topic. We are not here to discuss prejudice or to drag people over to our side of the fence. We are here to discuss possibilities out of a personal viewpoint.

So please keep the discussions to what you think should happen, what you think Bioware should and shouldn't do, and be respectful of other opinions that differ from your own.

We are here to find some middle ground, not to win a war.

A valid position. But instead of not having homosexual / bisexual squadmates you should simply have an option to dismiss / kill / otherwise remove the ones you don´t like. Would not only solve your Shepard´s troubles but also do much other good (for example telling Ashley and Kaidan to f*ck off - they´re both annoying as hell....)

Unfortunately having the option to kill all homosexuals in the game wouldn't work because it will give the player an opportunity to become a mini-Hitler and draw major criticism. I can see your idea for dismissal, however. Say they violated the Don't ask don't tell or something.
