@Cootie Yes, I have no problem with homosexuality, just altering characters. Regardless of whether it happened before, and whether I liked it or not, what exactly would be the point of complaining about it?

@Siansonea II I don't expect you to be 100% nice, but I do expect a level of respect (as I have shown you), and if you won't do that, I do not wish to discuss with you.

I'm just making sure that you understand the parallels we're making here, and how by allowing Tali and Garrus to be LIs, they opened the door. They justified fanservice, they made it possible.
They can no longer close the door on homosexual content, because it would make them giant hypocrites.

And regarding your response (or lack thereof) to Siansonea, I'd like to point out that you are not only ignoring her posts alltogether, you are ignoring a lot of posts that ask you questions over and over again, and you have never been specific.
Which is very disrespectful, as well as rude, as it makes you look very egocentric, as though only your posts matter.
This mutual respect-thing goes a lot of ways. Partake in the discussion. Don't just blurt words out.

@jlb524 Regardless of whether it's full of fail or not, it's in the game, and as far as I know, it's staying. What can I say?

@Stealthy Giraffe. Please refer to my argument about the friends and friend zone thing. It's a few pages back.

You do understand that the Talimance, fail or no fail, set a precedent, right? That regardless of a characters existing circumstances, if the character is popular enough, pretty much "anything goes"? Tali is a quarian, can't share food with a human, is one of a race of aliens with a very low population and therefore every quarian has a responsibility to have children if at all possible, and yet Tali throws all of that out the window just for some antibiotic-smeared sexytimes with a human? That to me is way more farfetched than Miranda saying to FemShep "I didn't know you felt that way Shepard, and it hadn't crossed my mind before, but now that I think about it, why not? Yeah, let's give it a shot." Because you see, in the latter scenario, both parties are the same species.

It cracks me up that people claim that two humans of the same sex hooking up is unrealistic unless both parties wear I Am Bisexual T-shirts in ME1 and ME2, but a human shagging a quarian or a turian is totally understandable, realistic, and normal. They're ALIENS. For all we know, they smell like mildew. And I'm thinking that the likelihood of compatible naughty bits is rather low.

I just like to keep continuity.  I wouldn't have minded if they were written at bisexual from the beginning but I just don't like retcon.  I didn't like it with Tali and Garrus.  I don't want it with existing characters.  I would prefer they make new LI's be exclusively gay or lesbian.

I liked the decision that they did in DA2 to make all LI's bisexual...but I don't think it would work in ME3.  I don't want characters changed simply because people demand they are changed.  So giving people viable choices (LI's that are only gay or lesbian) means that everyone is happy.

I understand where you're coming from Nick, and I share your concern. One thing to consider though is that the only reason that Kaidan and Ashley's planned same-sex dialogue wasn't available was because Shepard's dialog choices were turned off. So even though the developers pursued the idea up to a point, recorded some dialog and even did some animations, they put the kabosh on it at some point by making Shepard unable to make the first move, NOT by having Ashley or Kaidan proclaim exclusive heterosexuality. So if there is any concern about retconning characters, then the only one who's really relevant to discuss from that standpoint is Shepard him/herself. A simple line from Ash or Kaidan along the lines of "Why didn't you say something sooner?" would suffice to explain their role in the non-start of the romance in ME1, and would contradict nothing else they said or did in ME1 or ME2. It's Shepard's response to that question that is the most important part of the puzzle, and naturally it should be a selection of responses based on events in the game. Here's what I suggest as a list of options in this scenario:

VS: "Shepard, are you kidding me? I had a huge crush on you, were you blind? Why didn't you say something? You were my commanding officer, I wasn't going to hit on you. I figured if you were interested, you'd let me know, and I assumed I uh, wasn't your type." or

VS: "Shepard, if you had feelings for me, why didn't you say something? And why were you with Liara?"

Shepard's responses:
[Romanced Liara in ME1] "I was blinded by Liara, Kaidan/Ashley, but I can see now that you were the one I really felt the connection with. So what do you say?"

[Romanced no one in ME1 or ME2] "I don't know why. Nerves, chain of command, fraternization. I had a million excuses not to, and let's face it, I had plenty of things to occupy my time. It doesn't matter anyway, what matters is that I'm here now, and none of those excuses are in the way anymore. So what do you say?"

[Romanced no one in ME1, romanced opposite sex person in ME2] "Kaidan/Ashley, I thought I had something with ME2 LI, but now I see that you were always the one I really felt a connection with. So what do you say?"

And depending on Shepard's decisions in ME1/ME2, Paragon/Renegade rating, attitude toward Cerberus, etc., the VS would say:

VS: "Okay Shepard, let's give it a try. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it. I wish you'd said something sooner, but you're right, what happens now is what matters."

or

VS: "You know, Shepard, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it. But after all that's happened, after all that I've seen. You're just not the person I thought you were, Shepard. I'm sorry, but I can't see myself with you at this point."

Now granted, the style of writing is probably not ideal, but the intent of the dialog is pretty clear I think. What think you, Nick?

@ADLegend21 Either way it's fiction and reality doesn't always have a place.

@Cootie I have been asked questions that I have already provided answers to. Why do I have to keep repeating myself?

Also,if a door was opened, I want to close it. Mass Effect has enough problems with fan sevice/retcons (if you believe it is), inconsistencies, plot holes etc. I don't want any more problems than there already are.

ASHLEY AND KAIDAN WERE WRITTEN AS BISEXUAL AND WERE ONLY CUT FOR TIME AND MONEY ACCORDING TO A DEV.

Please to be fixing the continuity.

And if there are other gay characters that would be cool. :wizard:

The problem with retcons is that they're unrealistic and detract from a story. If realism doesn't always have a place in the game, then there shouldn't be a problem, eh?

I don't mean to offend but I think you contradict yourself more often than putting forth a logical point. :?

yes but there hs to be science in that fiction for it to be science fiction. Fiction doens't giveyou the right to do whatever you want, it has to make sennse to make money. that way Shepard doesn't just go bo and everyone who opposes her dies. Bioware applies some sciene into the game and one of them is biology.  that's why Tali takes all her medicines and Mordin gives you advice because the science applies. if not Tali would just say "it's fiction" and throw her suit into the nearest sun because the science tha make sher immune system weak doens't apply because it's fiction. are you seeing what's wrong with that bit of logic yet?Posted Image

Indeed, and it would be very helpful if Ram-Wolf-Person would just make one long wall-of-text summary and actually respond to some voiced concerns, rather than having plot-holes and contradictions and retcons all over the place.

@Siansonea - I think I don't trust Bioware's writers....and I don't like retcon.  And in all honesty it wouldn't matter because I don't persue the s/s romances in games.  I'm straight so it doesn't interest me...but that doesn't mean I think it should be excluded.  I believe option should be available gay and lesbian gamers.  They may be a minority but that doesn't mean they should be excluded.  When it comes to existing characters I would prefer they didn't retcon them.  I'll give you an example...the show Heroes.  They took a character (Claire) who has been in relationships with men and all of a sudden made her a lesbian.  That doesn't make any sense to me.
However if they do decided to make some ME characters from previous games bisexual then that is fine.  It won't be the end of the world...as long as they make it available to both genders.  My biggest frustration with the Liara and Kelly lesbian romances is that they didn't offer a Manshep alternative.  To me this means they were giving the option to teenage boys with a lesbian fantasy rather than offering it to lesbian players.  I find that to be insulting.  They need to make the option available to both genders or just admit the real reason why they included it.

So where do you draw the line on realism in a fantasy-verse?

I wasn't only referring to this either. Your stance on retconning characters when you clearly advocate the Talimance is a huge contradiction.

@jlb: Oh, definitely. The more the merrier! Or should I say... gayer?

You still haven't explained why a sexuality-expansion is such a huge deal, though, or why that specific area requires more realism than, uhm, let's say human genetic diversity.

I call it expansion because there's been no definition, so it cannot be contradictory.

@jlb524 Yet if ME3 went my way, there would be new characters who are gay/bi. I think it's a fair compromise.

@centauri2002 Not to be rude, but I have to explain this again? This is partially why I'm not responding to some posts, as I'm too busy going over what I've already said.

The reason why I'm not paying attention to the Talimance is because it already happened so there is no point going over that.

yes a charactere was already retconned due to popular demand, so why can't other's be retconned by popular demand? what's so special about Tali that only she can be retconned but not Miranda, Jacob, Garrus, Ashley,  Kaidan, Jack and Thane?? this is the point you keep ignoring.

Ugh, Heroes was absolutely unwatchable! It was a game of "Who is my character this week?" I gotta agree, anything like that is a big Do Not Want.

And I don't think anyone is asking for Kaidan, Ashley, Miranda, or whomever to suddenly be exclusively gay, but to be bisexual and available to both genders. For some characters I think it's not too much of a stretch unless they hire Heroes writers to do it. ;) Like I said, for some characters, there's nothing in their history or interaction with Shepard that makes it fundamentally unrealistic and therefore a retcon. I still think Kaidan and Miranda are the best candidates, but others think Ashley is more suitable. To me though, Ash was quite direct with Shepard, even flirting, so I can't imagine she would have been more shy with Female Shepard if she was open to the idea of women or Shepard in particular. Miranda, though, seems like she'd be less forthcoming, Shepard has to really draw her out, and it was the same with FemShep and Kaidan. It would make sense that Shepard would treat Miranda and Kaidan a little more carefully, and maybe not press the romance issue if Shepard is the same sex. Even if Miranda and Kaidan are bisexual,  that doesn't necessarily mean that either of them like men and women equally. Kaidan might prefer women most of the time, and Miranda might prefer men most of the time, and Shepard is one of the rare exceptions.

But yeah, expecting the people who wrote the Talimance to pull off such a feat of engineering...not a lot of confidence on my end either.

PS: Am I the only one who thinks Miranda and Kaidan would make a cute couple? ;)

I think you're failing to see the point. You can't discount something because it's already happened. It sets precedence. To treat one section of a community in a certain way and then to dismiss another because, hey, what's in the past is in the past, right? Well... that's just unfair treatment.

The reasons you give are never really to the point and often skirt around the issue. Like saying that a character becoming bisexual will ruin your friendship with them, when you don't have to intitiate a romance at all. What's the real reason? Now, don't just type out a one line answer. Actually think about it and give me something I can actually work with.

It will be appreciated.
