@jlb524 Regardless of whether it's full of fail or not, it's in the game, and as far as I know, it's staying. What can I say?
@Stealthy Giraffe. Please refer to my argument about the friends and friend zone thing. It's a few pages back.
You do understand that the Talimance, fail or no fail, set a precedent, right? That regardless of a characters existing circumstances, if the character is popular enough, pretty much "anything goes"? Tali is a quarian, can't share food with a human, is one of a race of aliens with a very low population and therefore every quarian has a responsibility to have children if at all possible, and yet Tali throws all of that out the window just for some antibiotic-smeared sexytimes with a human? That to me is way more farfetched than Miranda saying to FemShep "I didn't know you felt that way Shepard, and it hadn't crossed my mind before, but now that I think about it, why not? Yeah, let's give it a shot." Because you see, in the latter scenario, both parties are the same species.
It cracks me up that people claim that two humans of the same sex hooking up is unrealistic unless both parties wear I Am Bisexual T-shirts in ME1 and ME2, but a human shagging a quarian or a turian is totally understandable, realistic, and normal. They're ALIENS. For all we know, they smell like mildew. And I'm thinking that the likelihood of compatible naughty bits is rather low.
I just like to keep continuity. I wouldn't have minded if they were written at bisexual from the beginning but I just don't like retcon. I didn't like it with Tali and Garrus. I don't want it with existing characters. I would prefer they make new LI's be exclusively gay or lesbian.
I liked the decision that they did in DA2 to make all LI's bisexual...but I don't think it would work in ME3. I don't want characters changed simply because people demand they are changed. So giving people viable choices (LI's that are only gay or lesbian) means that everyone is happy.
I understand where you're coming from Nick, and I share your concern. One thing to consider though is that the only reason that Kaidan and Ashley's planned same-sex dialogue wasn't available was because
Shepard's dialog choices were turned off. So even though the developers pursued the idea up to a point, recorded some dialog and even did some animations, they put the kabosh on it at some point by making
Shepard unable to make the first move, NOT by having Ashley or Kaidan proclaim exclusive heterosexuality. So if there is any concern about retconning characters, then the only one who's really relevant to discuss from that standpoint is Shepard him/herself. A simple line from Ash or Kaidan along the lines of "Why didn't you say something sooner?" would suffice to explain their role in the non-start of the romance in ME1, and would contradict nothing else they said or did in ME1 or ME2. It's Shepard's response to that question that is the most important part of the puzzle, and naturally it should be a selection of responses based on events in the game. Here's what I suggest as a list of options in this scenario:
VS: "Shepard, are you kidding me? I had a huge crush on you, were you blind? Why didn't you say something? You were my commanding officer, I wasn't going to hit on you. I figured if you were interested, you'd let me know, and I assumed I uh, wasn't your type." or
VS: "Shepard, if you had feelings for me, why didn't you say something? And why were you with Liara?"
Shepard's responses:
[Romanced Liara in ME1] "I was blinded by Liara, Kaidan/Ashley, but I can see now that you were the one I really felt the connection with. So what do you say?"
[Romanced no one in ME1 or ME2] "I don't know why. Nerves, chain of command, fraternization. I had a million excuses not to, and let's face it, I had plenty of things to occupy my time. It doesn't matter anyway, what matters is that I'm here now, and none of those excuses are in the way anymore. So what do you say?"
[Romanced no one in ME1, romanced opposite sex person in ME2] "Kaidan/Ashley, I thought I had something with ME2 LI, but now I see that you were always the one I really felt a connection with. So what do you say?"
And depending on Shepard's decisions in ME1/ME2, Paragon/Renegade rating, attitude toward Cerberus, etc., the VS would say:
VS: "Okay Shepard, let's give it a try. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it. I wish you'd said something sooner, but you're right, what happens now is what matters."
or
VS: "You know, Shepard, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it. But after all that's happened, after all that I've seen. You're just not the person I thought you were, Shepard. I'm sorry, but I can't see myself with you at this point."
Now granted, the style of writing is probably not ideal, but the intent of the dialog is pretty clear I think. What think you, Nick?
