Again, I think this is due to the Action Hero From Hollywood writing they're trying to do with Mass Effect. The cool-factor, so to speak, which in my brain makes it so-ho awful.
ANYWAY!
I'd like to point out that the team working on the Dragon Age sequel managed this very well. Only in one scenario did I feel "forced into a confrontation," and in that case I was shocked, but I dealt with it accordingly and I felt very pleased afterwards.
I wanted to hug Anders' character development for being ossum, in my opinion, considering the medium.
My point is that DA2 handled friend zones very well. Bioware's not incompetent in that regard. It's just the ME-team that tends to try way too hard in the Action Hero area.
