On topic: anyone else hoping for some non-squad romance? Like Shiala or Gianna? I have some Sheps who avoid romance with crew as it would be inappropriate. Would be nice to have a payoff for them.

Shepard doesn't eat in any of the games but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a stomach. Shepard doesn't sleep unless he's unconscious in any of the games but that doesn't mean he won't get tired. Shepard doesn't go to the toilet in any of the games, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have an ****. I could go on if you like.

The thing that scares me most about this, is that you are guy players wanting same sex romances.

I dont care if you're gay or not but I dont enjoy when people like you try to push things like this. It isnt normal to begin with, but we allow it and accept that is how some people are...but dont try and force others into making everything tailor your needs like this, its wrong. Am I the only one who would HATE being the animator for the guy to guy scene if I was forced to make one?

On the contrary, I would love to be the one to animate that scene. *drools*

Besides, Shepard can be gay, he just doesn't have a love interest that's compatible. Which is what we're asking for.

"Oh, please, Bioware, give us a gay romance option."
"What? But there are no gay romance options!"
"That's what I just said. Pretty please?"

I have no idea how the lack of it hurts our wanting in any way.

But anyway! To get some overall discussion back in here, how do you people (it's a general you, not a racist/sexist/phobic remark! Don't hurt me!) approach romances in Mass Effect?
Do you throw yourself into each and every one? Do you scan and pick one after determining which suits you best? Do you pick the "designated LI" (Ashley/Kaidan, Miranda/The Priiiize) or something like that?

Would your approach to a possible homosexual romance be any different? How?

With my main Shep that's my in-game avatar, I go with my tastes (no one in ME1, Miranda in 2).Generally though, when I make a new character, I generate a personality in my head and have an LI planned out before I hit New Game.

For example I have one Shep I play as a Goth stereotype ( I don't hate Goths, I hate stereotypes. It's intended as ironic satire), Raven Shepard. In ME1 she went with Liara ( cuz *heehee* being Bi is cool) and in ME2 she went with Thane ( because he is so angsty deep, and falling in love with someone dying is so f'n Goth).

My ultra renegade, Dick Shepard, tried to get both Liara and Ashley, deflowered Liara Then cheated on her with Kelly and  Jack, and then romanced Miranda before promptly breaking it off after the collector base.

I don't foresee my strategy changing if they add S/S.

The animators seemed fine when doing it for Dragon Age Origins. The highest selling BioWare title to date. The one that, unlike Mass Effect 2, had a full on (PG-13) sex scene involving two males.

Professionalism>bigotry.

Bioware has always stressed that any and all romance content is optional. Guess what, It is. No one is forcing gay love on you and no one ever will, but having the option there for those who want it won't hurt you or anyone else in the slightest.

I was wondering if those flirting moments would amount to anything in ME3. I don't know if it's part of something bigger, or just simple fanservice.

I wondered this too - Gianna did steal a quick kiss in ME2 (much to the confusion/horror of my mShep, mind you) and there did seem to be something around Shiala on Illium as well. I haven't played through an imported femShep though, so I don't know if there are similar cameos by former male characters. One would assume that any additional romance options from former games, if appearing in ME3, would have to be for both genders - so I don't think it's going to be anything huge. Perhaps just another cameo in ME3.

As for approaching romances, it's a bit of a mixed bag. My main character romances nobody (well, he has no option to...), and I have a few imported ME characters of both genders that are staying true to their original LIs. Another ME2 mShep romanced Tali, just for kicks. It tends to be a bit of a spur of the moment superficial choice, rather than a drive to go for every possible option. For example, I can't stand Jacob/Miranda, so would never romance those two with any character.

"The choice was never given" does not equal to "does not exist". So many
things like "was still in the closet but came out after 100 near death
experiences and an actual death" are a possibility as well as the more logical "stayed single through 2 adventures because he/she did not find the right person".

Also...rewriting ME.....Ammo (heat sinks my ass), smaller talent trees (what happened to
my other 4-5 abilites, how did my Sentinel get so weak in comparison to
a few months before?) oh and also needing to take down
shield/barrier/armor before being able to use most abilities (did not
have to do that before) as well as a constant need to refuel?

Dude, rewrites are rampant, and I was just mentioning a few. Retconning is a very major thing in all forms of media from games to sci-fi to comics (Mass Effect encompasses all 3) and is a majorly accepted practice. And in this case it would not even really be retcon since it was a subject that was simply never brought up rather than fully denied.

No one is trying to "push" the idea, simply laying it out there in a request for equality, sorry if you feel pressured, I am sure that is not the intention of most who support this topic. But really who are we to say what is normal? Someone mentioned a page or 2 back that same sex relationships were widely accepted even in older cultures and only became taboo later on due to other religious beliefs.

On a related note, did any guys actually complain about the FemShep/Liara romance? I sure as hell enjoyed watching it ^_^ I'm just saying...

One reason I truly support this thread is because one of my best friends is gay and I can get pretty protective of equal rights thanks to years of seeing from a straight person's perspective just how douchey people can get. Also I grew up in an extremist-catholic country that constantly tried to force me to conform to beliefs and culture...so I am pretty big about "everyone deserves their own choices".

I respect that some people choose to be against the idea for whatever reasons, but at the same time I respectfully disagree.

It's not that simple and there have been some productive counter arguments to same sex romance.

My concern is resource management. Adding more relationships takes us down an even more streamlined ME2 route with relationships stripped bare and a simple case of 'talk to me twice and in two missions and you can have me'.

And we have a new fallacy.

You're fallaciously claiming that adding same-sex relationships is going to have a negative effect on the overall game experience because somehow BioWare will be cutting stuff out. Other variations on this fallacy imply that same sex relationships will mean there's too many potential relationships and that some non same-sex relationships will have to be cut... if so, you're implying that hetero relationships are somehow more important than ****** ones.

The only people entitled to imply there is a link between implementing same-sex relationships and worsening game quality are the BioWare devs, as a team.

The ME1 romances were deep and well thought out. The ME2 romances are pointless and boring. Adding simply adding more romances would make the situation worse and I would be against them doing so if the new S/S romances were like the existing ME2 romances.
I only want a new s/s romance for ME2 (or in ME3) if it isnt going to be like the Miranda or *shudders* Jacob romances.

Having gay/lesbian romances is good. Being able to roleplay to the extent that you can decide which way your character swings is a feature worth having in an RPG that emphasizes actual roleplay. It shouldn't be said that a character should be able to romance anyone, however. NPC characters should have their own set orientations and romantic preferences. In the real world, being gay doesn't make whoever you're interested in gay. Shepard being gay therefore does not make [insert character here] interested in him/her.

Having the option to flirt with any character could be interesting, of course, although with certain possible attempts having no possible outcome but rejection. Seeing how that might influence the team dynamic would be... intriguing, to say the least.

But wanting Femshep to be able to romance Miranda isn't anything more than wanting your particular naughty fanfiction to come true. Miranda happens to be straight. Therefore, Miranda will not romance femshep. This is not a shortcoming, this is just how the world happens to work in Mass Effect 2.

Very well put. Totally agree :)

Getting rejected would actually add a bit of depth. Not everyone has to be gay, not everyone has to be bi, not everyone has to be straight, setting that basis would solidify some of their pesonalities.

At the end of the day, Bioware writes/makes the game. It's their characters, and their stories. They decide who's what, and that's the way it should be. The Mass Effect we've loved so far has been made by their minds off their feelings. While community idea injection can be good, I hope they still do what THEY want. It's like music:

Once you stop doing what YOU want, and start listening to every fan desire, you lose your way and you may as well stop. The pure, "untainted" originality and soul, and the endless possibilites are now being steered. That freedom is dead.

The story is there, the characters are there. Shephard isn't gay, get used to it. He/she has been established as such, that's the character Bioware have written, same way as he/she isn't a hippo or a dinosaur. That's what he/she was written as, pretty straight forward. Same goes solidly for most of the rest of the crew. I doubt we'll see any random sexuality changes along the way, I hope not, as it would damage consistancy in story which is what makes Mass Effect what it is.

As long as Bioware keep to their roots, stay consistant, and remember that the passion and soul in Mass Effect are what make it great, there should be no problem. I wasn't fussed on the sort of "road to romance" in ME2 but the passion and love and care for your teammates was way stronger than in 1 for me.

Being "anti" straight, and/or wanting more gay content is just the same as being anti gay and wanting more straight. They're both taking sides, so don't act like you're better than each oher, keep yar heads on. Divides like this are maintained by the people who uphold them. It'll pobably always be so, that's human nature.

It's kind of like argueing religion online. Believe it or not, agee or not. We're all different. It's our personal beliefs that define us, and it's the individuality that makes us human and keeps the world turning. We'll always stand by what we believe in, as it's who we are. As long as we've thought our beliefs through, that's fine, good actually. We need to stop trying to change each other.

I don't expect anyone to read that though:)

Basically: Bioware need to call the shots, or we lose the purely unchained game we've loved so far. Deep character changes would ruin the story that's been built. Adding new characters, or trying to be "politically correct" etc. that's their choice.

If you think I'm taking sides here, you must be standing on one, because I'm not. I love the game for what it is, and I'll let Bioware choose, simple. I don't want them to rewrite the characters as the story and character background is SO important. Adding new characters, is down to Bioware. Though I think the team is pretty much full, that was the point of 1 and 2, build de team. They need to be careful of any new additions now.

Respect.

If memory serves, you can actually make a move on Samara and she turns you down. It's not a "gay" thing, but I found it interesting that you actually have the option to try for a romance with a character that you can't possibly have a romance with. (There's a similar-yet-very-different option with Morinth, too...)

Good point on Shephard. I was kind of referring to "canon Shephard" I guess. It was a weird move to make canon 1, and also let you choose your own, and then still have a canon Shephard, if you get me. In some ways I think they should've just had 1 Shephard, but then customization is nice.

Maybe I'm shallow, but she was far too sexualized for me to take seriously. I couldn't bring myself to be so obvious when choosing a LI. Out of all of the romances, Tali's was only decent one available and even that was atrociously creepy. That's why I begrudgingly decided to stay faithful to Ash (which is a good thing in retrospect), despite Bioware's attempts at getting us to forget about our ME1 loves and sex the new people.

To be honest I think just having one Shep would have killed alot of the diversity and slightly killed replay. Part of what made this a fun shooter/RPG was the multiple classes and the ability to truly make your Shep well...your's. I think they picked the "canon" Shep because he represents the most basic ideal of the character (Soldier for the Military) while they did also need a "face" to be able to use to represent the game in trailers and general "default" character for people who did not want to "make" a character.

Also one reason I love most W-RPGs is because of making your character/class choices. The whole preset character with preset name/class/background/personailty is one reason why I have avoided most J-RPGs like the plague in the past few years. Most J-RPGs cast you as the "Young Warrior Hero" and to be perfectly honest I hate playing a fighter-type in games. I always pick a tactician/mage which is what made Adepts, Sentinels and Engineers appeal so greatly to me.

I pretty much went down the same road, LOVED her in Chuck, but once in game the black hair and other little nitpick-worthy things made me stay single on my main Shep. And had me running to Jack on my 2nd playthrough.

Actually, Jack is a pretty good romance, too, when you take the Paragon route of getting her to actually care. Garrus was good, too, but in that amusing, comedic sort of way...

I would like to register that I find the stigma for the so-called "tacky purely physical relationship" thing really, really annoying. As if you need to be gushing Shakespearean for your romance to have an emotional undercurrent or to be valid, or as if a physically-focused romance can't be called a romance. Because, you know, sex isn't the reason romance exists in the first place.
