Something I have not seen said before (or maybe it has but I have not noticed) and then I go back to my lurking-position.
Gay-possibility is not only for those who are gays in real life. I'm a heterosexual woman and and all my characters are males, and I don't like to make expections to that rule. I don't care how weird this is and how much a freak it makes me, but I just feel more comfortable as a male in games, and I know I'm not the only one. And, I like to watch men, why I would want to watch a woman who does not please my eye for 30+ hours (in DAO countless hours)?
Here is just one example why: I played as a femShep one playthrough just so I can romance Thane (thought: well, killing is killing no matter genre, so I make this one woman for a good cause). I find Thane to be my favorite team mate in every way, in ship and in battle, and I drag him with me everywhere. So what does this woman I made do? She autoflirts with Jacob, right front of my eyes, witch by the way almost exploded. I could not talk to Jacob at all in that playthrough. This is just one example of why I don't like to play as a female: devs always manage to make females something I don't like, someting I don't feel comfortable with and something I just can't relate to. They always act the way I don't want them to act. I often find females look ridicilous too, though not in ME2 (I leave Miranda out from this, I don't have to play as a Miranda. I just don't talk to her more than I have to).
But when possible, my men are always gays. Obvious, I'm heterosexual and I like to watch men. I'm romantic too, and romances are great fun. But in this example, none of women are something I want my men to romance, but there are Garrus and Thane...and Kaidan of course. So...what I do? Use countless hours to find out ways to get my men to romance other men. I edit saves, I suffer the clay faces and female voice in important convos, just to get the few final encounters to be how I want them to be. I think my men deserve the best!
For me, if I want to romance Thane or Garrus, the answer is not to make a female Shepard. Romance takes only half on hour of the game, but I have to watch and listen the femShep the whole game. I don't want to. I want to watch and listen the maleShep. But I want to romance Thane too ( I did Garrus already, great fun).
But of course there is lesbians in game (and that crap about Asaris is just crap, they are made to look females just to please men), and they are not there to make lesbians happy. They are there to make men happy. So, if a man plays as a femShep, he does not have to romance other men but can still have females. It would be terrible to make men feel uncomfortable. I feel uncomfortable if I have to romance women, or if my femShep autoflirts with Jacob 'cos devs thought Jacob to be the ultimate thing for women (and failed, badly)
And why to make gay relationships so damn difficult? Every romance with every character could be written to match with any Shepard. Every romance could have two paths, gay and straight. Romance would be always be the same, convos the same, just few genre checks in convos if necessary, I don't even demand them. As far as I care, genre checks should be removed. No big hassle. And before someone says "but Jacob/Kaidan/whoever is straight", yes, he would be in your game. In my game he would be something else. In RL I know couples who have fallen love to eachother and genre had nothing to do with it.
This was my two cents, back to lurking.
