Upon entering and trying to move the party inside the Lothering Chantry for the first time on a new character, DAO often crashes to the desktop and I get the generic "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working" pop-up dialogue from Windows.
My party is able to enter the chanty, but once I either use the WASD keys or click on the ground to move, the game will freeze briefly while the party is moving, then crash to the desktop.
On reloading the game, I am able to enter and move around the chantry with no further issues.

Rarely (hasn't happened in several characters), my party will have no issues entering the chantry, and only when I try to exit will the game crash to the desktop in the same manner as above. This only happens if the game does not crash when I initially enter and move around.
On reloading the game, I am able to exit the chantry with no further issues.

No other building in the game has the same effect. It is only in the Lothering chantry.
No corruption of is obvious to me prior to entering Lothering, visual or otherwise. Dialogue is perfect, cutscenes fire appropriately, etc.

This crash has occured in both Windows XP 32 and Windows 7 64 bit.
This crash has occured in entirely different computers. One a Dell, one an Asus, different motherboard, etc.
This crash has occured in all game patches, although currently I am at 1.03 - PC version.
This crash occurs regardless of origin, race, and gender of the main character.
This crash occurs regardless of party configuration.

Are you running any mods or addons? These would be the most logical suspect for such a very specific issue. I went through the lothering chantry several times on my female dwarf character not too long ago with patch 1.03, so it's not a standard issue bug in 1.03.

Funny ya should mention this, I've had 1 crash there as well at the Lothering Chantry on my 1st Character, Salona Amell. I've been attempting to determine a cause as well.

My computer Specs are here. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Right now, I have several mods enabled, however this crash has occurred before I downloaded any unofficial mods. I have only enabled unofficial mods within the last month or so, so I don't think it's likely it is interference. I will try disabling some of the bigger ones like Qwinn's fixes to see if may be the cause, but I'm just not sure.

Maybe some effects or group buffs, possibly triggered by tactics are to blame? E.g. rock-armor or icy weapons automatically re-activating after the zone switch and causing problems with this specific chantry design and/or placement of NPC's? Crash to desktop usually happens during scenes with much graphic effects. What kind of modes did each party member have activated at the time of entering/exiting the chantry? Is any party member carrying any special (DLC/pre-order) armor or weapons?

Doh! I forgot to mention, My official DLC is the stuff from Journeys, the BDA, & the Stone Prisoner.

My current Mods are Pineappletree's Vibrant Colors, & More Hairstyles. (Salona is using a Pineappletree Eye Color, but the rest is CC.)

My team Composition at the time was Main Character, Alistair, Jowls, (aka Dog) & Leliana. (Leliana had been acquired only a couple of minutes before this happened.

Generally my main character does not have any modes active, but I tend to have Alistair with Precise Striking on, Leliana has Rapid Aim, Sten has Powerful Swings. This is variable from save to save, since there's no combat in the direct Lothering area.

Special worn DLC items include Bregan's Bow, Lucky Stone, Pearl of the Anointed, and a custom ring is worn by everyone in the party (except Dog of course).

Party forms include, well, everyone. My party has included combinations of everyone available.

If it helps any, relevant system specs are:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Intel® Core™ i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz

8gb DDR3 RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4600

Any other specs I should post?

If the crash happens very often for any of you, maybe it's worth checking if you can go through the chantry a couple of times without crashing when no mods are enabled, special items equipped and without any modes active? If it works you could narrow down which (combinations) are causing the issue and work around them. Also, that would probably make it much faster to fix for Bioware or mod fixers, making a permanent solution more likely.

Odd. I've played my Salona Log & attempted to reproduce the Lothering Chantry Crash, & it didn't come back. I went in & out of the Chapel & had no unusual problems, & finished my business in Lothering with no further unusual incident, not that I mind. It appears I wasn't of help after all.

Thus part of the issue in trying to figure out what's going on. Sometimes it doesn't trigger, sometimes it does. I recently made a new character, and went in and out of the Chantry with no issues, even with some mods enabled. So..I still don't know.

One thing I remember is that on my 2nd pass, I talked to the Chasind Guy a different way then I did the 1st time. It's anyone's guess though if the Chasind Guy Conversation path has anything to do with the Crash or not.

Edit: Oops, I dunno if this is relevant or not, but before attempting my 2nd attempt at Lothering,I've installed & got working the 'Tucked Hairs' Mod. I doubt it coulda served as a fix, but the more info, the better.

Plus, for both attempts, my party was Salona, Alistair, Leliana, & Jowls (Dog). I'm certain that 0 Sustain Abilities were on at the time both runs. No reason to have them on in Town wasting Stamina. On the 1st run, the Crash happened after the Chasind Guy talk, & the talk with the Templar Guy near the Door, but before getting into the Door. The 2nd Run, like I said, was uneventful.

I tend to not talk to the Chasind dude. I'm very careful to walk around him because he's an idiot, despite being a somewhat amusing dialogue.

I get Leliana first, talk to Sten, then head to the Chantry without talking to anyone else. Sometimes I talk down the merchant out in front if I've picked up lots of sellable stuff. Lately, I've kept my sustains off until after I get out of the Chantry. Didn't seem to make much difference, as I've crashed 1 out of 2 new test characters.

It's pretty weird, but at least quicksaving right before entering is like second nature now.

Another odd curiosity, I have now gone in & out of the Lothering Chantry once on my Ghoulia (City Elf Female Rogue) Log & she has had no trouble at all whatsoever in the area. 0 Crashes. She talked to the Chasind Guy & went through menacing kinda responses.

I still wonder if that Chasind Guy might be capable of doing something game crashing if a certain exact Dialogue path is gone through, or if he's innocent of the Crash Problems. This kinda thing is so freaking hard to diagnose.
