Yeah, battery life wasn't something I considered, that could be a problem.

Also 3D pictures? Hmm, I sense a new Warioware game, as these days they seem to be Nintendo's go to demo of concept set.

The 3D doesn't consume any power, at least, it's negligible. It uses something called Parallax Barrier technology, which are essentially two screens overlaid with another, with precisely angled slits that sends picture to one eye and the second to the other. Thus, stereoscopic 3D that works incredibly well. And it really does, I got my greasy paws on one on the showfloor yesterday, and I really couldn't believe it.

Oh, the parallax barrier doesnt eat much batteries, it is afterall just two fancy screens overlaid. BUT the processing of the 3D is what draws power. As I said, it has to render same screen TWICE on slightly different angles, different pictures for both layers. This is how it stereo 3D works. The screen is just there to output the picture.

Whatever the battery life I'm sure it's better than the battery life on my old Sega Nomad. That thing is a battery vampire! Six double A batteries for just four hours of gameplay.

Heh, thank god efficiency has evolved quite a bit since those days. :)

On paper Nomad is good, and still is. Who wouldnt want a portable Genesis/Megadrive, cartridge slot and everything? I would play Shining Force II nonstop on trips.

GAWDDA@#*(! I was just about to get a DSi too :(

but yes.. the DS (heck, even the GBA) had good enough graphics for some GREAT games the likes of which are never seen on other systems, and the 3DS is only going to do that even better

Too much focus on graphics tends to leave gameplay shallow, as evident by the PSP's failures IMO.

Ok, after seeing those Zelda screenshots this has officially become the first portable to attract my interest since the Neo Geo Pocket. I may actually buy this. Just when I thought I was through with Nintendo they rope me back in for more. O.o

Ok we've won over a mod now if we could just get a dev in here to make a bunch of commitments he has no authority to see through...

Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy is on the list. I hope it's better than the other portable Assassin's Creed titles.

Nintendo has always been pretty good when it comes to battery life. True this will most likely be the most power usage they have had in a system but they normally put in some features and such that can be disabled or modified to extend battery life.

Since they announced that you can watch 3D movies on the system the battery life must take precedence.

Someone mentioned that the relatively low resolution helps.

Movies? I wonder if Avatar will come out on the system? Although I don't want another umd fiasco.

OMG!  I think I just noticed the main purpose behind the tilt-motion sensor: because surely with the touchscreen and the analog nub the DS already didn't need another control mechanism, but this video kind of suggests that 3DS titles will automatically change the in-game camera angle as you move the device so that the stereoscopic picture will always seem to come from some ways beyond the screen and "through" it.

Now that could be pretty trippy, and it's something you can't appreciate from watching a video of it or looking at screenshots, you just have to see it in person! and that's AWESOME!

heh look at this cool advert: youtube.com/watch?v=83GoGHBkdyg

How often do you see Bill Gates or any of the XBOX/PS3 division execs starring in their ads and connecting with their fans like that? :)

@Sleepless

It is quite common for Nintendo (and rather very common in Japanese corporations). Sony had some ads like that running in Japan for other lines. MS, I haven't seen

Can you imagine playing FPS games in stereoscopic vision? (O_O)

I just hope Nintendo remembers to put enough muscle into this machine to let it handle some heavy games for the next 4-5 years or so. If there's another handheld generation before that, a lot of people are going be very pissed.

AND PUT THE D-PAD BACK WHERE IT BELONGS, dammit!
