I really love the system they set up to deal with sustained spells in DA:O, in other games you would have your mana drained by a certain amount every second or every few seconds to upkeep a spell, or it would be a timed buff that you would have to reapply. Instead it just takes the spell cost out of your max mana when its active, and the second you remove it, it gives you back 25% of the cost immediately.
Any thoughts?
Awesomeness of DA:O sustained spell system

Titan Quest was the first game I saw with such a system for reserved mana. It was indeed useful and a smart tweak on mana systems.

Yep, I totally thought of Titan Quest when I read about DAO's sustained spell system. It worked really well in Titan Quest and expect it to work really well here. Instead of making it a pain in the ass (ok buffs are on, lets quickly get to the next battle while before they wear out!) it becomes a tactical choice - This much mana is reserved for active buffs, that's less I have to work with but its a trade off.
Of course, I'm also excited to move away from the terribly outdated DnD system of memorizing each individual spell, and having to rest to regain their usage. Yes I know this isn't the first RPG to use the mana system obviously, but it's just so much better than silly memorization of DnD based games.

my only question is since one bioware guy said some sustained spells cancel each other
in the shield and weapon tree shield defense-shield balance-shield wall
if you read the descriptions shield defense and shield wall are the same but shield wall is better...so will it overwrite the shield defense if i try to activate both? If it does i waste 3 talent points for 1 talent....

I believe so Arttis as they are both seperate stances you would only be able to use one at a time.

Then it the question becomes how much does it increase defense and chance to shrug missiles off and is it worth it.

I would hope that each one serves a better purpose for some encounters rather than Shield Wall just makes Shield Defense obsolete, Only time will tell though I guess.

If you insist on looking at it that way, I'll point out that taking Shield Balance "wastes" 2 talent points for 1 talent.Arttis wrote...

a cumulative fatigue penalty is gained for as long as the spell is kept active. This penalty increases mana costs of subsequent spells by a certain percentage.
Just a tidbit.

if i were not getting shield wall shield balance would reduce the penalty to attack i sustain from shield defense...not entirely useless but somewhat close for a talent.Jab0r wrote...

DAOC has that same kind of system but it uses concentration instead of power/mana for buffing.

I don't see the problem actually with the classic mana bar, always worked fine for me ^^
It pushes you to think about your builds and spell combo's =)
