Without a doubt Japan's, best director. Akira Kurosawa is the best known Japanese director outside of Japan, and his films have been the inspiration for numerous movies around the world such as The Magnificent Seven and Star Wars.

His Samurai movies are good but The Last Samurai is better than all of them.

The dollars trilogy are some of my all time favorite movies. And A Bug's Life is a milestone for animated film (And a huge part of my childhood). Star Wars is Star Wars so yeah. If these are based on his work then he must be brilliant.

I used to see Kurosawa films occasionally when I channel surf past IFC. I did stop to watch a few moments of Throne of Blood and Ran, and I liked them. However, the only movie I watched completely was Seven Samurai and enjoyed it immensely. Since I don't think I have IFC anymore, I promised myself that I'd watch any movie I can get my hands on.

He was a genius, just watch Seven Samurai. He was the first do such things as 'the reluctant hero'

I love many of his earlier works but my  favorite movies are Ran (won many awards including Cannes, BAFTA, Oscar) , Rhapsody in August and Dreams. He got really personal with the last two, so I'm very touched every time I watch those. B)

/facepalm

Roshomon is pretty good, we debated for a day over it with my film maker friend. So who did it? :P

Shichinin no samurai is a must see, and I liked Kagemusha very much despite it was one of his new era films.

Cruise never worked as a sympathetic character to me. I don't buy it. I get the creeps just looking at him.
Which is why I found myself really enjoying his performance in Collateral.

Kurosawa is indeed a genius, although I understand if he's not everyone's cup of tea. His films seem slow and often too abstract to aim for the majority of viewers but there is no doubt he is a great filmmaker. I find "Dreams" to be his best work but, judging by the poll, I think I'm in the minority.

Good poll.

I'd just like to address something in the OP. I think that in addition to Kurosawa; Yasujiro Ozu, Hayao Miyazaki and Kenji Mizoguchi are all arguably in position for the honour of being Japan's foremost filmmaker.
So there's absolutely reasonable doubt.

Kurosawa was a master at the composition of a film. He understood that what makes movies a strong storytelling medium was all in the sound and the visuals. Otherwise, read a book.

I've only seen Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sanjuro, but I'd say those three are classics even if I don't watch a lot of movies from Japan.

As for Last Samurai, it's probaly one of Tom Cruises best movies (thats not saying much), but it is one of the worst "Man in a Foreign Land" stories since Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles Image IPB

I've only seen Yojimbo and Seven Samurai, found Yojimbo to be a little more entertaining. I liked the main character better than any of the ones from Seven Samurai. And I agree with you Liquid, Cruise is much more suited to play an unstable contract killer than a "caucasian samurai"

Hopefully thy cast him as some masked guy who gets gutted in one of the big battle scenes.  That would be good.

Kurosawa''s films were innovative and fantastic, and the authenticity of his artistic drive is without doubt what Hollywood should look to find again.

I didn't understand Akira, it's cool when the flying kid turned into a giant pus monster, other than that, no idea what's going on.
