EDIT:just to clarify, I'm talking about consoles that were successful. That means consoles like the N64, PS1, PS2, Super NES, Sega Genesis, original Nintendo etc. This does not include failures like the Sega CD, Virtual Boy, 3DO, Dreamcast, etc.
My personal pick would be the Nintendo 64. Gamers who are in their mid to late 20's probably remember when the Nintendo 64 was originally codenamed Project Reality. Nintendo said that the CG scans used in the marketing for Donkey Kong country would be possible on Project Reality and that it uses the same power as CG super computers by Silicon Graphics used in movies like Jurassic Park.
It went on for a while. In fact, I think the first time I heard of Project Reality was way back in late 1994. Sega and Sony had recently released their flagship consoles of that respective generation in Japan, then rumors of Nintendo developing some new super console emerged. The hype was unprecedented. Finally, details of the console were revealed and it was called the Ultra 64. Some beta shots of Mario 64 were released and while it looked good it didn't hold a candle to the CG stills that Nintendo said the console would be capable of.
Finally the system was released in Japan and it only had 3 launch games. Pilotwings 64, Mario 64 and some weird chess games.
I was so hyped for this console that I talked my mom into importing one from Japan for me by lying about completing a math quiz or something, don't remember the exacty details, I was 13 at the time. Man was a I dissapointed. Those silicon graphics turned out to be a blurry, hazy mess. I wasn't even sure if this system was more graphically capable than the Playstation.
Nintendo made some really stupid decisions in this system's design, most notably giving the console a cartridge format rather than a CD. This move cost them Square and Enix. I remember Nintendo grew extremely arrogant and dismissive of such criticism going so far as to say that RPG gamers are not real gamers and that the lack of games on the N64 was due to the company's focus on "quality over quantity.
This was especially ironic since as it turns out 90 percent of the n64's library was complete trash.
One thing about nostalgia is that we tend to only think about the good things in the past we remember. That is why people forget that for every Zelda OOT, Goldeneye, and Mario 64 there were 10 Deadly Arts, Hybrid Heavens(one of the worst RPGs ever made) and Quest 64s.
Had the Nintendo 64 been made by any other company I think it would've doomed them, especially considering Sega went down with the Dreamcast even though that was a great console that was way ahead of it's time.
The n64's technology was dated even before it was released. The graphical potential could never be realized due to the decision to make it cartridge based. This decision was probably the worst flub ever made in the gaming industry right next to Daikatana and ET for the 2600 and Nintendo's prestige is the only thing that saved them from going down Sega's path.
So yeah, in conclusion the n64 sucked and I think it's the worst of all the consoles which are historically seen as at least somewhat successful.
