I don't quite understand what you mean by saying the Xbox is essentially a PC. Isn't the hardware of every console similar to a PC? Also, what is wrong with consoles being like a PC? Would you prefer it if we went back to the days where consoles had no hard drive, or internet access?

What I liked about the good old days of console gaming was the discussions were a lot more focused on content and facts rather than fanboyism and opinion.

I had plenty of debates back in the day about Nintendo vs. Sega but we always respected the others views and acknowledged the advantages and disadvantages of both sides.

I don't know about that.  The internet was not as widespread back then so there wasn't as much communication about the subject in general.  I remember I was on the Gamefan live chatroom during the console wars between the Saturn, PS1, and N64 and I remember PS1 fanboys would mock Nintendo fanboys for losing the Final Fantasy franchise, the n64 fans would mock the PS1 and Saturn for it's pixellated graphics and the Saturn fanboys would pretend that the Saturn was the choice console for "true" hardcore gamers.  Looking back in retrospect, one particularly funny thing was that the N64 fanboys would always act like the 64DD was going to revolutionize everything.
There were also the PC fanboys too who acted like the 3dFX Voodoo GPUs were going to make consoles extinct.
The term "fanboy" did not exist back then but it might as well have.

You hit the nail on the head,  before the Internet people actually had to try a system out to get a real opinion. Since the Internet became more mainstream people just find someone with the loudest opinion then just follow them without giving reasons why they have such an opinion.

Hell before FF7 I could have a proper discussion about great games and why people like them.  Once FF7 hit people were like "It's the best game EVAR" but when I asked them why they though it was they would just reply "Cause it IS, you're just stopid".

To this day I still have not had anyone give me a proper explanation about why they enjoyed playing FF7.

I'm not going to profess expertise here but from what I've seen, the software APIs (like DirectX, XInput, Live client) across both systems are the same; it takes very little change in code to recompile for the XBOX or PC than it would between a PC and Wii or PS3. Indeed, Microsoft's free XNA Game Studio lets you publish the same project for either the 360 or PC with minimal reconfiguration, and the ability for the 360 to run PC stuff like that would probably take more than an emulation layer unless it wasn't already similar enough to begin with.

Now, about the whole piracy bogeyman, never mind the laughable fact that you labelled me as a bloodthirsty bootlegger because I picked on your favorite toy, but you've got to be REALLY naive to believe that 360 owners are any more deterred from pirating 360 games in this day and age than pirating PC software. Either way, the PS3 remains the only uncracked console of this generation; shouldn't there be more PS3 exclusives, by your logic of "sound business decisions" and all that?

Ok, little bit of derail.

I loved FF7 because of the story, characters, gameplay, music, graphics, etc. What constitutes a "proper explanation" in your view?

OH you CLEARLY didn't read the letters sections of most gaming magazines from back then

Hell, it was WORSE in those days, when you didn't have lil Guugle or Wikipoodia at your beck and call all the time to quickly confirm or refute every single little white lie and stuff :P

I don't believe that Xbox360 owners are more deterred from piracy than PC owners. However, the PC market in general is smaller than the console market and thus piracy is a bigger deal on the PC than it is on consoles.

The PS3 would probably have a lot more exclusives if more people owned it. The Xbox360 and Wii are still better sellers. I think if I were a developer though I would the PS3 to win this console war.

I understand what you're saying about the similarities between the Xbox and a PC, I just don't see why it is such a bad thing. From a technical standpoint I think the Xbox360 holds up just fine. If the Xbox360 is to be trashed for anything it should be it's poor durability.

Pretty much that, as I said whenever I asked someone why they liked the game or why they this it's the best I just got the same old "Because it is".

Yes I have played FF7 and frankly I found the game quite tedious, the magic system made having other characters rather pointless meaning yoy just picked the three you like based merely on special attacks and to hell with the rest.  I prefered the system in FF3 (The real one) where you had to properly balance your team with the different classes of fighters and magic users to find a good balance to your play style.

I actually shut FF7 down during the final boss fight cause it took so fricken long for him to cast a spell and I couldn't bypass the animations.

No, the PS3 has been cracked quite thoroughly. Linky

It's just that most people don't the have Blu-Ray burners that would be needed to make the discs and the process is fairly intensive so there's very little piracy yet. Soon as Blu-Ray players/discs become more affordable then....

Different opinions....fair enough. I'm assuming you LOVED FF Tactics then because it has the elements you seek.

Never played FF Tactics so I can't give an opinion on it.  I have played Ogre Battle which I believe is similiar and did enjoy it to an extent.  My friend actually hates me since I own the actual cartridges of the SNES and N64 Ogre Battle games and he is a huge fan of the series but can never get a hold of them.

Very similar I believe yes. Too bad PS1 graphics are so outdated but I'd still recommend Tactics. It's in my top 5.

Ok, no more derail from me. Thanks.

True in the end this all comes down to personal tastes and opinions.

I normally support Nintendo but I do have a Sega Dreamcast sitting right next to this very keyboard on my desk loaded with Jet Grind Radio.

because it cannibalizes the PC market (yeah, I'm pissed at not getting Fable II and SSF4 yet) which could've been a lot better if Microsoft poured resources into improving that instead.

It's bad because I'd rather have the PC become the be-all end-all of all game genres, and Microsoft had the power to make that so, instead of the current situation where you've to own everything if you want the types of games that're found mostly on specific systems. It really should be PC vs. Handhelds, and that's probably how it's going to end up. Hell, everyone owns a PC, and even real-cheap netbooks are getting decently capable of running mid-end games.
