Well at the moment I am trying to play through the game without Wynne. And I always take her with me. Alistair, Sten. usualy But this time I am going to try a different approach.

My last playthrough was as my templar/champion, Leliana, Wynne and Loghain. Loghain was brought along (replacing Sten) to be the sacrifice and fought with a bow for the whole fight. Not optimal, but had to be done.

I plan for my current playthrough to have my spirit healer/blood mage, Leliana, Alistair and Sten. This go-around, Alistair gets to do the deed (for the achievement).

It really doesn't matter who you've got in your party. In my play-throughs, the bulk of the damage to the AD is done by the ballistas for when the AD is out melee range.

My party spends most of the time killing the darkspawn that arrive in the middle of the fight. Leliana and the mages are good for this since their ranged weapons will seek the darkspawn and tag them from across the vast rooftop; I find that melee chars are constantly chasing darkspawn trying to engage them.

The only time the AD sits still for melee is towards the end when it is low on health and you are meant to take it down at that point. Strange how the AD jumps about out of reach when it is healthy and then comes to you asking for the deathblow when it is nearly dead. lol

Sten, Shale and Leliana: Sten for the power, Shale for the laughter, Leliana for my love interest.

Alistair, Leliana (Love Interest) and Wynne for my 1st playthrough (Sword&Shield Dwarf champion, sacrified himself), they were my default party. Same for my second (Dual wield Elf rogue, Alistair as LI sacrified himself). On my mage playthrough i had Alistair, Morrigan and Zevran with me (Dark Ritual made, Morrigan was my LI after all). For my newest game (Archer-Rogue) i plan to bring Loghain (he shall kill the damn thing), Zevran (LI) and Wynne (No heal=No good).

I've taken Alistair, Sten, and Morrigan each time, but this time, I'm going to try Alistair, Wynne and Leliana. Really, I've just been lazy, which is why it's been the same each time. I find it easier to get Morrgan and Sten up to speed than the others. Alistair will always go with me, being the othe warden as well as my strongest fighter, unless I ever decide to go the Ultimate Sacrifice route, which isn't all that likely.

Shale is always on the Roof with me. With Large Clear Spirit Cyrstal, plus a lightning cyrstal. She ends up doing all the damage for me.

It's different in every game, really. I usually pick my core team early on so I can hear all their cutscene triggers and unique companion banters and stick with them until the end. On my dwarves, I usually prefer having Oghren and Shale in the party along with summoning the dwarf army when I'm on the roof.

Alistair, Wynne and Leliana

2 shield/swords in combat with Wynne healing and Leliana as an archer is deadly and makes for a good story

It's always different, but my first time through it was:

Alistair (He's usually in all my teams...)

Morrigan (Love Interest)

Oghren (Never used him much, decided to bring him along)

My first time was Alistair, Morrigan and Wynne.

It just depends how I level each one of them up. I think the next will be Alistair, Morrigan and Zev.

With a character who spares Loghain it's Loghain, Wynne and Leliana.

If I don't spare Loghain it's usually Wynne, Leliana and Alistair.

Sometimes exchanging Wynne for Morrigan if I do the Dark Ritual.

A mage (for healing and AOE): which one depends heavily on my PC and is my PC if I am playing a mage.

Zevran with his dex sky high (he ends up killing the AD 9 times out of 10)

Alistair/Loghain/Shale: one or more depending on whether my PC is a mage or not. Which one (or two) depends on the PC.

Wynne for healing and some damage, got Fireball on her now so I foresee many burning darkspawn on the roof this time through lol. My one "evil" playthrough where I killed her was tough, we were all chugging poultices up on that roof like there's no tomorrow :P

Leliana or Zev, with Leliana set up as archer for additional ranged attacks. If I'm playing a warrior or mage then they are also available for ballista repairs. The other one stays behind for me to play as when defending the gates lol. When I played as a mage I took Zevran since I could do ranged attacks myself.

Last is usually Alistair, not only for tanking and bashing but because he deserves to be there with me...I want him to help me see it through.

Usually Alistair, Morrigan and Zevran. It's my normal crew and I don't see any reason to change at the gates. I never use the ballistas, too much bother. So I have most of my people plinking away from range and usually call out the Dalish army, as well.

It depends on who my love interest in the game is.

but it is usually Al (as I don't usually save Loghain and feel the future king should fight) Mori (because I usually do the DR and I just feel she should be there) and either Zev or Leli (because they are the two I usually switch as LI)
