It's very simple, you have 10 character slots to fill with quite many more characters to choose from. Original ideas are welcomed (for those whom are willing to have a robot with EDI's conscience uploaded to it fighting next to them, or those who want a dissident Collector by their side). If you want to, you can also list squadmates who you don't want to return at all costs.
My wishlist:
1. Samara (Even though I highly doubt she'll be back as a squadmate given the fact she said she would return to a few places to bring justice, Omega being one of them. I figure she'll be reduced to a side mission. Even Shepard needs someone with wisdom to talk to when things get rough. Besides, I spent most of the time with Samara and Grunt at my side during missions.)
2. Mordin (I hope he is not replaced by his scientific prodigy nephew. I would strongly dislike getting an e-mail from Mordin which says: Shepard, Krogan Genophage cure you handed to me completed, its use at your disposal. Will be here if you need me for advice.)
3. Grunt (Almost a guarantee, his story is far from over. I think he'll spend some time with the Urdnot clan between ME2 and ME3 to learn Krogan values and **** some Krogan ladies senseless and breed an army for you. I initially found him very bland, but out of all characters in ME2, he grew on me most from the initial meeting to the end)
4. Garrus Vakarian (The bravest of the brave, second to Shepard of course. Second in Shepard in a lot of aspects in fact, which makes him a well-rounded loyal soldier. Similar to Samara, I'm afraid his story is finished and that he'll be reduced to a side mission.)
5. Tali vas Normandy (Much like Grunt, almost guaranteed to return given the events on Haestrom and further unfinishe business. I though of her as very boring in ME1, but she is next to Grunt and Mordin in terms of character growth for me.)
6. Legion (Has way too much untapped potential and there's plenty left in Legion if you ask me).
7. Miranda Lawson (Over the course of the 2 games I mostly made paragon choices, excluding the Council which is human-led now and I gave the Collector Base to Cerberus. A direct liaison of flesh and bone to Cerberus is a must for me. She does need to pick up her game though, the genetically perfected, hardened though dissapointed woman act only lasts for so long. She became my LI for being genetically perfect.)
8. Wrex (C'mon, you know the enemy will have it coming for them when they see Shepard parading with both Wrex and Grunt. Besides, Grunt could use a Krogan mentor, even though Shepard can be his Krantt, depending on your choice.)
9. Liara T'Soni (My previous LI, it will be interesting to see how she'll cope with Miranda, besides, having a biotic information broker on-board is not exactly bad. Should she attack me, I'll have Wrex and Grunt to hide behind
10. Thane (He brings some much needed philosophy to the team and there's so little we know of the Drell. I hope Mordin can cure Thane.)
Like I said, it's highly probable at least 3 or 4 of these characters won't make it in your potential squad, but I really prefer to move on with the majority of the crew on-board during the start of the game. I don't want more than 2 new squad members as it will hamper the story development. However, Bioware's recent statements are reason for concern in this department.
Characters I don't want to see in my squad anymore:
Zaeed Massani (A cliched war veteran, I thank him for his services so he will get a firm handshake from me but he's done if you ask me, I saved the innocent people during his loyalty mission, so now he can hunt Vido himself).
Jack (An unstable psychotic foulmouth who is a jeopardy on every mission and brings turmoil to any team she's in. I need my squad to be sound of mind and sound of body, she's neither and during the night she could sneak in and put a pillow on my face.)
Kasumi (Why bring her along if you have Thane already? Unless Thane is dead in ME3 I see no reason for Kasumi to return as Thane and Kasumi are very similar if you ask me. The new Ashley/Kaidan if you ask me).
Ashley Williams (I left Kaidan to die on Virmire. Having Ashley badmouth me on Horizon is proof that she cannot comprehend the bigger picture. Shepard saved the galaxy, twice as we speak and then this lady comes down and tells me that I turned my back on everything we stood for. In the words of Garrus: "Damn it Williams, you're so focused on Cerberus that you're ignoring the real threat." Had the likes of Ashley, the Alliance, Embarrassor Udina most of all and the Council their way the Galaxy would be paste and the Reapers would throw a party and waste themselves.)
