Kind of funny how the first 3 downloads (Stone Prisoner, Wardens Keep and Return to Ostagar) added to the game as you played it. With Darkspawn Chronicles and Leliana’s Song its just content that has no real affect on the main game at all and really has limited replay value.

*edited for space*

IDK man. I've already played through the main game a couple of times. I understand how nice it is to have stuff that expands the main story. But this DLC is like, a little dessert to follow up the big meal that was the main campaign. I can dig that. I'll just try to enjoy it for what it is.  Even with the limited (or non-existent) replay value.

Sure. It’s a matter of taste. No one will doubt that. Everyone should add the contents to his game he or she wish to but, after all it’s also an quality aspect.

I´ve got the impression that Stone Prisoner, Wardens Keep and Return to Ostagar were from the start integrated in the main plot of the game and cut out afterwards as option for later digital contents. I’m fine with that.

BTW I bet that Dragon Age 2 will also has optimal digital contents from the beginning. Posted Image

However taking the price from the coming content plus Darkspawn Chronicles comes near the current expansion pack, which truly was not totally round, but gave me a great time and I´m not regretting it, that I bought it.

with this one can assume that there will be one for all if not most of the other characters

oghrens journey to find branca
zeverans life as a crow
alistar being trained as a templar
morrigan living life with her mother and killing templars that go into the wilds looking for them
shale fighting darkspawn with the other golems before being a statue then getting into the hands of that mage
sten and his adventures
wynn and training new mages

For Shale I'd also like to see more about how she ended up in the hands of that mage... maybe bits and pieces, told as recovered memories coming back to her, up through his death and her being turned into a statue...

That could be fun.

Sounds good. For the DLC: Shale the beginning you could count me in …but probably I would prefer an additional character for Awakening as an DLC.Posted Image

about time. a DLC which deals with the backstory of one of the original DA npcs. I hope that this is the first of many, eg Morrigan, Zevran, Alaister etc backstories. can't wait to see what they have come up with..

I wonder how the dialogue will work. will Leliana be silent or will she respond back, Mass Effect-like?

Her VA recorded dialogue for this so I'm going to assume it'll be similar to that of Mass Effect, you pick a line and it'll be voiced. Down side to that though is I doubt we'll see much in the way of choices/dialogue since they wouldn't have dropped all that much to make this.

Seeing as how she has an established back story they want to work with too, I imagine you're right and that it will be pretty limited.

seems like this takes place in Ferelden, and we have to listen to that bi-ch's accent some more. we probably won't get more than 3 vague dialogue choices at a time, either. if this is true, I F--KING CALLED IT. on pg 4, most of the way down the page.

As if you always had more options for dialogue with a non-voiced pc. Posted Image It's a DLC, and just like any DLC (think RtO) or even expansion it has a limited budget. Awakening wasn't dialogue heavy, either. I'm quite happy to have a voiced character for a change, and to expect more or even as much dialogue as in the main game seems like a bulletproof reason to dislike this DLC. It's your choice.

it's not just the dialogue that annoys me, but w/e. I'll still buy it, Lel is my favorite companion so far.

What, you've never spent hours in rapt silence, listening to your significant other's stories of their adventures before meeting you?

Well I guess this "obsession" is comparable to the reason people wanted to know what happened to Luke and his friends after Empire Strikes Back, rather than have a totally new game with characters we never heard about before. We wanted to know if the Hobbits finally reached Mount Doom in the Return of the King, not have the story-flow interrupted by the chronicles of a teenage Gandalf learning spells at the mage academy.  *edited for space*

But what you mention is exactly what Tolkien did after finishing LotR. He wrote the Silmarilion to explore the early history of Middle Earth, and some of the stuff from the Lost Tales that, if video game content, would be considered "side quests"

Leliana's my favourite companion. Over the course of the game i think that i built up a bit of a connection with her (it's not weird really), and was quite sad at the end of the game. If only i wasn't such a selfless being, i wouldn't have sacrificed myself to save the land of Feraldon, and i'd be able to see her again.

I'm glad to see some content focusing on her. I do think that all these standalone module things are reaping havoc on the new game menu. It feels kind of uneven to me, to have the option to play a full length game, a decent sized expansion and little stand alone bits all together like that.

I was expecting more Darkspawn oriented content.

Good observation, and yes I am aware of that. My point was just that the "obsession" -  as some people call it - is understandable. I am sure most people would like to read The Two Towers after Lord of the Rings, and not go back to the Silmarillion or The Hobbit at that particular point. All people? Not necessarily. Most? I would think so.

I'm not saying that prequels and side quests cannot be interesting in their own right. However,  was everyone back in 1977 also obsessive for hoping for a sequel with Luke, Han and Leia, Darth Vader etc (as they ended up getting in Empire Strikes Back), rather than preferring it to be followed by a prequel movie strictly about Luke working on his uncle's farm?

I'm also not saying that people who prefer not to continue or add to the warden's story are in any way wrong - it is a matter of taste. I guess I just took a bit of an issue with the word "obsession" (and thus put it in quotes), as it seems a harsh word by which to portray a perfectly acceptable view. Similarly, I find it strange that people would have such a hard time understanding this view.

i am really happy about this DLC announcment and am eager to get it as soon its published.

Being a huge fan of the Dragon Age Origins product i was somewhat disappointed so far by the awakening expansion. Do not get me wrong, there is nice fighting and nice exploration, but three main issues made it somewhat bitter:
1. the ties between origins and awakening were "lose" regarding previous decisions. all "personal" character development from a greenhorn to what we made him was mostly lost, importing just some "hero" in awakening.
2. previous romances (heyy. especially Leliana) are lost in space (with the new patch at least there is some hint)
3. the depth of conversations and interaction with the other characters was very disappointing in awakening.

sorry, it may be due to my 38 years i already gathered on my back, but while monotonic hack&slash Gauntlet  Style wasking of the hill on the C64 back in the 80ties its not Bioware Style. Awakening gains momentum to the end, but falls short taking it in perspective to Origins and the character(s) development(s).

So all in all, keep the good work, get such additions like Lelianas Song, and provide dark fantasy rich content as main Games and Add Ons. That was the magic about Baldurs Gate and NWN line, and i think it reached with the DA Origins new heights.
While i was playing Dragon Age Origins i even took my playstations in my travels (yeah well i am in Sales Team, working for an embedded TV software manufacturer thus traveling a lot) to continue playing in the hotel as i could not detach from it.. so dense was the atmosphere and the interest how the story would continue and even more how the relation and character(s) would develop.

greetings,
Woodstock-TC, Germany

And playing a blank character can take away from the immersion due to there being no past to keep the interest.

If your character has no past, that's because you didn't make one.  That's your fault, not the game's.

And if I have a pre-defined character, do I know any more about that character's background when I start the game?  I have yet to see a game that gave me more than cursory background information for the PC, seemingly expecting me to learn that background while I was playing, even though that background necessarily has an impact on my gameplay decisions, so the two are guaranteed to conflict if I learn them out of order.

This can work if they handle the actual RP gameplay better than ME does (let me choose what Leliana actually says).  Playing with a pre-defined character can be fun in an RPG.  BioWare's party-based games have several playable pre-defined characters in them, but this will be the first one since Baldur's Gate that lets you take control of that pre-defined character in conversation.

I'm looking forward to see how it works (though I may well skip the DLC, given my unwillingness to install patch 1.03).

See, I think this kind of DLC and the base game where I have full control of my characters background, work great together. I always loved the books associated with the various canon characters in my favorite gaming franchises. I just think of this as something similar, a sort of playable novella about Leliana's past.  And that is worth $7 to me. Darkspawn Chronicles, however, wasn't worth it to me.

How long was fail-spawn fail-icles? We can logically assume it will be as long as that.

This DLC looks great though, gonna start a complete play through soon. Just in time I suppose.

Leaving aside the (totally mistaken![) characterization of Corinne Kempa's accent (which I adore, but I know some abhor) Bioware actually gave a great summary of the "framework" of Leliana's Song: both for the narrative structure and for the dialogue implementation.

See the interview with Lukas Kristjanson (Senior BW developer) at: http://pc.ign.com/ar.../1101599p1.html
(Extract regarding VO below.)

================================
IGN: In the press release announcement we saw that this DLC will be a "fully voiced cinematic experience", can you explain what that means? Will there be character interactions comparable to the type we got in the main campaigns? Or will it be a more combat-focused DLC with the occasional voice over, more akin to Darkspawn Chronicles?

Lukas Kristjanson
: "Fully voiced" means full player-character voice over, which is something new for Dragon Age. The player takes the role of Leliana in her own story, so we have a defined character we can record, and we of course brought Corinne Kempa back for the purpose. Dialogue choices are presented as text paraphrases that lead to fully voiced lines. It's a hybrid similar to Mass Effect 2, a system I know well, and we are eager to see how it is received in this setting."
================================

Reading the entire inteview only made me more  eager to play this!

If said products were "prepared ahead of time" then they're leeching money off of their customer base. Furthermore, if they are being released with as many bugs as Awakenings was (which seems to be the case), then they are very poorly-designed and not fit for release.

I'm certain they are favoring DLC's (which generate revenue) over bug-fixes (which do not generate revenue). They certainly haven't said enough to indicate otherwise, apart from the periodic musings of Mr. Woo who comes around and takes cheap shots at posters, along with coming up with excuses as to how hard the whole process is.

At least he's not the only poster though.

Given my experience with the corporate world, it's probably a sort of hybrid combination of both. Even if stuff wasn't baked ahead of time, they have a schedule of when they are expected to have things like expansions and DLC done and ready for release that was probably designed by some marketing person well in advance of the release of DA:O. And running concurrently with that team trying to keep up with expectations for launch is another team trying to patch and work on the various bugs related to that release.

Why another standalone DLC? There is no replayability whatsoever with standalone DLCs...

This kind of story couldn't be told if it wasn't standalone. I personally greatly enjoy all the possibilities that standalone content offers. Obsessing with the PC warden leads to unnecessary restrictions.

To each his own I guess. DAO had some great storytelling without relying on standalone content so I don't think your point is particularly convincing.

As far as "obsessing" with the PC, I don't see what's wrong with that. Nor do I believe that it forces unecessary restrictions. Restrictions actually allow for more creativity as you can't create without restrictions (in a way existing limitations enable people to be creative by finding ingenious ways to surmount these limitations). By the way there are restrictions linked to a standalone DLC focused on a story we already know and one that has already been told (Leliana's past is the main subject of the discussions the PC can have with her).

Darkspawn Chronicles got rid of the Warden PC thus proving that the PC was not needed for the Blight to be fought. That is a major mistake IMO. There can be no epic without a hero and if the PC is not the hero I don't see the point in playing the game. Besides, Alistair is defined as an unwilling leader because the PC has to step in and take charge (otherwise the PC would end up being Alistair's sidekick and Alistair would invariably be the Warden King of Ferelden).

I like Leliana but I'd have preferred a DLC that would have fitted into the DAO main storyline. Standalone DLCs are like kleenex. You use them and then get rid of them. As such they are probably better fitted for more casual players who are happy with playing through the game once (or maybe twice) and then move on to other games. Most of the dedicated DAO fans have probably played through Origins more than 10 times now and they probably plan on going for even more runs. How many runs of a standalone DLC can you expect to play? 2 or 3 if there are mutually exclusive choices to be made? Or if you are addicted to achievements?

Playing a 90 minute standalone DLC that may offer an interesting glimpse into a character's past may not be such a bad thing but it sure won't improve the main game (and let's be frank, there is definitely room for a lot of extra content in the main story).

I just hope that the "unique reward that transfers into your Awakening and Origins
campaign
" is not Marjolaine's ******. ^_^

I have to disagree with that bit (that I highlighted in red) . I didn't get DC because the alternate reality didn't sound interesting to me. But, if anything, the Darkspawn victory proves the necessity of your particular Warden as the epic hero.

And the Leliana DLC in no way detracts from that. She is a peripheral character who would be of no note at all if not for her connection to your character, the epic hero. The only reason people (players or fictional people in Ferelden writing histories) would be interested in her past would be because she was connected with you.

If it isn't your cup of tea, you don't think it's worth the money, you are taking a stand against supporting the company monetarily until they release a patch that fixes your issue, or whatever, I can respect that. But I trust BioWare not to jack up the stories. It's really what they do best.

To me, standalone DLC that focuses on the past of these peripheral characters are icing on the cake.  They are like the novels and the comic books and what not. They flesh out the history and past  of the world my created hero lives in, and makes me really care about the decisions I make in game. And they're fun. Darkspawn Chronicles didn't do this, or present an intriguing enough alternate reality, so I didn't get it. This kind of DLC though, I can get behind bite-sized companion DLC. It's worth $7 for a one or two time experience to me, just liek a cheap paperback.

I didnt buy Darkspawn Chronicles and not sure about buying this either, to be honest.

Dont get me wrong, I liked Leliana and really wanted to go to Orleis.

But I want to play as my warden character, with all the choices I made reflected. I want to go to Orleis with Leliana, not play a prequel that stands alone.

I would have loved a DLC that happened post-game, where Leliana gets an urgent message to go to Orleis and you go with her and help her out. One that reflects your romance, Marjoliane decisions from DA etc.

I havent played it yet, of course, so wont rule it out, but I am a little disappointed.

I'd like to see more stuff like that too. Not everyone might have romanced Leli though, so you are limiting your audience with DLC tailored in that direction. (My main character for instance, a dwarf, tried to romance Leli. But I never really got the options to go as far with her as my human character did, despite having higher approval and her positive responses to my flirting.) That kind of stuff (the ability to continue a romance) is better for an expansion or sequel. The standalone DLC, however, is the perfect format for telling the story of a past exploit IMO.

(*edit Zy El beat me to this... lol... I'm running late.)

When I first heard of this DLC, I was pretty excited but the trailer was really disappointing. Whoever that girl is, it's not Leliana. Her voice might be the same, she looks like a generic NPC you can also find wandering in Denerim with a ponytail and a generic face. That's NOT Leliana. Her attitude, her looks... all gone.
I dislike her ponytail and she even looks older than the Leliana we know from DA:O! Wth?
Sorry Bioware but I'm not going to buy this DLC.
