I apparently received a group invitation but when I click on the invite there is no group to join. I can't seem to dismiss the update message that tells me about this new (nonexistent) group.

It's quite annoying because the update message is always there whenever I go to any other section of the BSN.  Is it possible to do a db adjustment and make it go away?

I can offer 1 qwatloo or a dozen cookies.

Have you tried clicking the red x on the right side of orange bubble or the grey x on the left side of the invitation message when the box with updates show?

Hi Arlana - yes of course, I do both but the message just keeps reappearing.

There is also the idea here, but it may only work till you get a new update in which case the old one comes back. Still it worked for some people, so it's worth a try. I hope it helps.

EDIT: Additionally, it is suggested here to clear the browser cache after doing anything that makes the update go away. Maybe combining both methods will work.

I have this problem now with a friend request. The notification won't go away no matter what.

You have to either accept or refuse the friend request, I believe.

But there is no friends request there. I just keep getting an indication I have one.

It's a bug that I've had for going on 2 months now...It can't be fixed (at least for me) and I've tried all the prior suggestions... you either have to live with it or delete & remake your account.. sucks, but there it is.
