So I was recently in a discussion where I was talking about how Saren serves as a much better antagonist than Harbinger does, and a friend pointed out something very interesting to me. Though I could think of many, many reasons why Harbinger's not a strong villain, when he asked me what made Saren stand out, I drew a blank.

So I have been considering, just what exactly it is that makes Saren special. Why Saren is an awesome bad guy, rather than just being a "meh whatever" compared to Harbinger's lame. I began my investigation by trying to think of things about him that were different. The first thing that came to my mind was "Why the heck has he got those spikes on the side of his head?"

This isn't just Saren being a spiky alien, he's the only Turian who has one!

Garrus doesn't have one:

Councilor Velarn doesn't have one:

It's not even part of the Turian concept art!

So, I found myself puzzling over this. Was this some sort of cybernetic implant? Is Saren a mutant? It was at this point, that a realization dawned on me that there was a clear, scientific explanation for this. You see, as Garrus explains during his final romance scene:

Turian fringes are basically like hair. So Saren has unusual growths of hair on the side of his face instead of the top of his head. A villain with hair on his face....wait.....

Yes, that's right. You heard me. I just scientifically proved that Saren has the alien version of an EVIL MUSTACHE. I have thus demonstrated, that Saren is not just a guy who looks good compared to Harbinger, but in fact, the single most awesome villain ever in his own right.

Interesting anology. I always assumed it was a "side-effect" of the indoctrination.

Could also be the turian equivalent to plastic surgery.

Nice modesty leaf btw.

Funny post :)

But don't you think the turians have variations in the bone-plates covering their heads?

Considering the extent I've gone through to look at all the turian tattoos in the game... I've had some time to look at the their fringe.

Saren is unique in that department. XD

Lulzy analogy Lemon. ;)

I never realized turian genitalia looked like a green leaf! (Or even that it was located roughly similarly to humans)

With those revelations aside, I'm still baffled that anyone thinks of Saren as interesting, particularly because of the very minimal role he actually played in Mass Effect.

This is a family forum! It's not like we're talking about a game rated M or something!

Genetic modification and augmentation play a role in the Mass Effect universe, which explains Sarens cybernetic implants before Soveriegn implants him with its own upgrades. On the topic of his unique head fringe, I have to agree with those that say the bone plating in turian skulls is varied. As to why he is the only Turian who has it, I cannot say, maybe Bioware got lazy and just gave all Turian NPC's the same head shape, rather than desiegning unique heads for every turian. As for important Turians:ex. Velarn and Garrus, the normal turian fringe looks good on them, just like the unique fringe Saren has looks good on him.

Saren physically shows up and fights Shepard directly (with a space skateboard!), and you have an actual face to hate against from the start (Nihlus!), unlike Harbinger and its "direct control". Saren is also a dynamic character, even if he is only going further off the deep end, and possibly back again at the last minute. Plus, there's the whole thing about the Geth arm, and his past with Anderson.
So what do you like more? Evil mustache or flying space skateboards?

You sir win.

Though to be honest I've always attributed Saren's weird head fringe ears to be one or part of the following...

1) Older Turian (sort of like big ears for older humans)
2) Saren is a unique breed of Turian. Not surprising considering he wears no War Paint, a.k.a Clanless, which probably means he has a unique family background.
3) Saren has already been heavily modified by Sovereign through Cybernetics. Perhaps his longer fringe is a result of such things.

I always assumed the writers added the spikes to make Saren more distinct and sinister...

And then forgot to explain it.

But your way is funnier! So I go with your way. Yes.

More like giant fingernails on your head, if you ask me. Difficult to style, but would look fabulous painted pink!

Wow! Saren has little head spikes! He is completely unique!

You know what else he has? A freaking Geth arm!

I kid, i kid. Seriously though, glueing horns onto someones head ads instant sinister.

Maybe its just like Garrus fringe at the side but more pronounced and stuck over his hood.

I've always assumed that turians have many different styles of fringe. BW just stuck Saren with that one to make him stand out from other turians. You only ever see turians who look like Garrus, because BW didn't make differential alien models, just textures. I mean most all other alien species look the same except for humans and asari, due to their face.

Interesting take on it though.

It's...it's all so obvious now.

Saren is the Mass Effect equivalent of Peter Lorre!

Hmm.

Having a face helps.
Being able to complete inelligent sentences.
Being able to hear wtf he's trying to say.
Understanding his motives.

Oh.  This is a joke thread.

Saren doesn't smoke cigarettes. Only big huge cigars.
