so i got DA:O and Mass Effect 2 for my birthday a little while ago...a few days after i lost my job...anyway, i decided to get myself some BW points for DLC, ive gotten a few for ME2 abut i only have 700 odd points left, now (and i dont know when i can add more) i dont know whether to get the new Overlord DLC for ME2 or get one for DA:O...now ive only just started on this game....got to Mage Circle/Redcliffe before i realised i needed to start again...

so basically, are there any 'must have' DLCs for DO:A ? What has the longest completion time, what has the best weapons and armor etc

The DLCs are awesome for the item drops:
Warden's Keep: Warden Commander armor set and Starfang - best 2h or 1h sword in game
Return to Ostegar - Cailen's armor set (awesome tanking set), Duncan's dagger and Sword, Meric's sword, Cailen's Shield.

Both armor set you can upgrade to the highest in game Tier 7 level at a Warden's Keep merchant (after beating it). I'm not sure about the Ostegar weapons and shield if they are upgradable though, anyone?

These are pretty short additions, actually incredibly short, but the items are awesome for the rest of the game.

If you have to choose, I'd say Return to Ostagar would be the one to pick. Wardens Keep is slightly shorter, and doesn't offer quite as much unique gear, but it does have a chest to store your belongings and gives your main character two extra talents.

I think I completed Return to Ostagar in about an hour and a half, but I like to explore and waste time so I'm sure it can be finished faster. Warden's Keep is a bit less. Both are awesome, but Warden's Keep is my favorite DLC. Also, maybe you would want the Stone Prisoner so you can get Shale but that one is really short.Image IPB

If you support Miranda's ass, then I'd say Overload for more Miranda. ;)

On a serious note, the DA DLC's are pretty short, about an hourish, but worth it as they're pretty fun. I'd say Warden's Keep is the most useful in general depending on what you're playing. Though as someone mentioned, if you don't have Stone Prisoner, I'd get that as Shale is awesome. You get a short mission to recruit so to speak, and you get a personal mission as well. However Shale is an great character to have around with some really good banter.

i got the stone prisoner with my game so thats ok...so it looks like all the DLCs for both games are about the same length....how good is Awakenings? worth the money?

I liked Awakenings, but many people don't. The main reason for this are apparently bugs, i encountered only few. The story is good, the gameplay also (except you like your games very difficult). It's about 15-20 hours long, so it has a lower playtime/price value than Origins, but a better than the DLC.

Of the DLC i prefer Return to Ostagar, it's story had a bigger impact on me. Not that the story of Warden's Keep would be bad. Both offer good gear and roughly the same playtime. Warden's Keep's personal chest is rather helpful.

Well, Return to Ostagar and Warden's Keep are must have. I can't help but think that those are actually parts of core game, cut out to be sold separately.

Awakening is pretty good actually, especially if you liked Origins. It's easily the best DLC, and it actually continues main story (and story in Awakening is actually interesting and answers several questions, left unanswered in Origins). However, to be honest, Awakening is overpriced. So it's up to you to decide if you're willing to pay for it.

ok last question...for now :)

what order to the DLCs and expansions occur in relation to the original story? i.e. what ones happen after the origins story and what ones happen during?

All the DLCs happen during the origins story and can be completed anytime as they stand alone but are related to the main storyline. The awakening expansion occurs after origins:bandit:

To clarify that a little more, the DLCs occur in Origins, not during the origin stories. They are accessible after you have reached Lothering and gone to camp for the first time, but you choose to do them any time (barring the end sequence) during the main quest.
Awakenings occurs after Origins and can continue the journey of your Warden should you desire. I liked Awakenings, had a bug free experience with it. The most common complaint people voice regarding Awakenings is "I can't talk to companions enough", but that comes not out of a lack of dialogue but the manner in which the dialogue is delivered.

ok another question, everyone keeps talking about the armor and weapons from the DLCs, but from what ive read they are all heavy/massive type and sword types, which makes me think they are only good for warriors....or do they change depending on the class you use?

Also, I know Starfang from WK doesnt transfer to Aakenings, but what about the Warden armor and the stuff from RTO?

It doesnt seem worth getting the Cailan armor from RTO if only my warrior player char can wear it

Actually I'm not sure about that ^_^" Some DLC items does transfer but I always only assume DAO vanilla items transfer, this way I don't have to remember anything! =D ... I'm laid back that way.

The best armour in the game for arcane warriors is arguably Wade's heavy dragon set with the Evon the Great chest piece. That carries through all the way, even through Awakening.

For rogues, the Felons Coat also carries through with whatever hand, foot and head pieces you prefer.

For warriors, Legion of the Dead, Effort, Juggernaught, Diligence and Wade's all transfer well. My very first playthrough my warrior found herself nekkid in the Vigil Keep courtyard because the Warden Commander set does not transfer over. She still defeated the darkspawn.

I've found that the Helm of Honnleath, which is available with the Stone Prisoner, causes a well known bug in the Silverite Mines. It happens every time with me. Others haven't had any problems with it.

Return to Ostagar items all transfer over to Awakening without muss or fuss.

If I were you, I'd run through Return to Ostagar and pick up Cailan's for my warrior. It's reasonably attractive and has very nice stats. You can also pick up Cailan's shield/Maric's sword set for a sword and boarder or Duncan's sword and dagger for a dual wielder.

well i decided to get the dlc's and the armors are very nice, both look great of my DW lady, just a shame the Warden gear doesnt transfer...so my warrior will be starting in Cailans gear

I may try another run with a female warrior at some point and get all the armors i can find

I just wish i could upgrade the Family Sword all the way, i found a mod that kets it upgrade but i cant get it past Tier 5, withe the WK chest and vendor

Your signature is actually more distracting so you may have to do something about that as well.

Anyway, the first two pieces of DLC are not too bad or too expensive so it was probably the right decision to get them both but the last two pieces of DLC are really bad and I think you had better stay away from them.
