RROD on my 360.  Noooooooo. I haven't even played my 360 for about 2 months before today.  Honestly though, Borderlands was pretty good.  I was really suprised because I'm not a huge fan of FPS's.  I was really looking foward to killing some time between now and Nov 3rd.  If I don't get my 360 back before Nov 3rd I'm really going to consider switching console's.  I've been waiting for DA:O for so long it's almost comical that this has happened.Image IPB

I've got to admit, I hadn't paid much attention to this game. It kept being touted as a cross between an FPS and an RPG. I was thinking something along the lines of Deus Ex, but watching some videos today, I realized that it's more like Diablo with guns (now we have 2 "with guns" games. :P)

Still, it looks like something I might pick up someday (someday being once it hits the bargain bin.)  It looks like it's probably the kind of shooter I prefer.  I generally don't care for most shooters, and I absolutely hate ones that rely on darkness and things jumping out at you for "difficulty".  This reminds me more of something along the lines of a Serious Sam type of thing (though I haven't played it, and I only played a demo of Serious Sam.)

Anyway, sorry to hear about the RROD.  Yet more proof that consoles are evil.

:P

I wonder how many people's Xboxes will RROD during their Dragon Age playthroughs. And how many complaint threads there will be. ;)

Same ideas when it comes to Borderlands, as well as MW:2, ill wait till their both cheaper to get them. I have buddies on my PSN buddy list that have been hounding me to get MW:2 but DA:O is my top priority when it comes to games. All the rest can wait lol

What is this RROD?  I know what it means, but what the hell is it and why haven't they fixed it?

If this shiz happens to me after waiting so long to play DA:O I think I might pop.  Image IPB

This wiki page will help explain RROD.

Think of it as  BSoD

RROD = Red Ring of Death. It's nothing similar to the Blue Screen of Death, as when Red Ring of Death appears(three red lights on your Xbox), it means that the Xbox has overheated and the internal compnents are burnt, permanetly damaged to an unusable state. Microsoft does offer free repair/replacement, but of course that would be inconvienient nonetheless.

While the Xbox players burn their hardwares with DAO, I will be powering it through on PC. :D

A BSoD usually means that part of your computer is broken or overheated. Well at least the ones I have gotten. (Playing with a PSU that survived a lightning strike is a BAD idea >.> )

Blue Screen of Death are usually caused by bad drivers for hardwares. It can also be caused by overheating or memory/power supply damage, although much less likely comparing to the previously mentioned cause. In most cases, a restart, or a driver reinstallation/update are all that's required to fix/prevent a BSoD.

PCs are much tougher than those puny boxes.

Sorry to hear that, OP. I'd thought/hoped Microsoft had finally fixed this issue in new units, but guess not. Happened to me a couple years ago playing Crackdown (not the finest game I've ever had in my 360). The good news is that I haven't had a single hardware issue since then. The bad news is that the turnaround time was...unspectacular. Hope you get it back in time for DA:O.

I have the PC version pre-ordered and am looking forward to playing it when it releases this upcoming weekend. It looks like a lot of fun and a good game to play when you just want to blow crap up. While the reviewers have not been gushing and giving it scores of 90%+, they have all been fairly consistent in giving it scores in the 80% range and seem to agree it is solid, particularly the cooperative play.

I fear I am going to go broke in the next few months with all of the excellent releases, unfortunately. BioShock 2, Mass Effect 2, Assassin's Creed 2, and a few others will bankrupt my account and my time. I still also need to catch up on a few other games I have purchased but barely played, such as Risen.

By the way, does anyone else agree that 2010 is looking to be the year of sequels with few original IPs? I cannot think of too many high-profile releases that do not have a 2, 3, 4, or, in the case of Final Fantasy, a XIII, tacked on the end of their names.

I dont think I am going to buy it, because I have got to play Dragon age origins, Modern Warfare 2, and Mass Effect 2, and now I am playing a copy of forza 3, wich I lent from a friend..

Borderlands looks interesting but i wont have any money left for Dragon age(Collector's Edition), COD:MW2(Hardened Edition) and Assassins Creed(Black edition) and the theres Mass Effect 2 soon after. So many games... Im hoping my 360 and PC survive and my brain doesnt overload.

@Sornin: APB, Heavy Rain, Alpha Protocol, The Last Guardian...there are some promising original IPs on the way for '10. That said, you're right, the highest-profile and most-anticipated games are generally sequels. I'm just generally excited for next year.

'09 looks to be finishing in strong fashion, though - Borderlands definitely caught my eye. I'll be interested to hear what people here think (including OP) when/if they get a chance to play.

I didn't like the whole, "OMG A COOL SHOOTER WITH COOL LOOKING PUNKS... AND ITS AN RPG FOR SMART PPLZ" marketing they had. They tried too hard to look new and hip, and it came off as really immature in my honest opinion.

I might buy it.

RPG's are for smart people? I thought they were games for people with a calculator fetish.

To me it looks very much like Fallout 3. Is there an actual difference?

Everything?

The games are about as similar as an orange and an apple. Fallout 3 is an RPG with FPS combat, while Borderlands is an FPS with some RPG elements, but it is definitely not an RPG.

Fallout 3 is a single-player game with a focus on an involved, branching plot, whereas Borderlands is designed for cooperative play and has almost no plot focus (from what I have read).

Borderlands is more comparable to Diablo as they both share a similar design philosophy, except one has point and click combat while the other has FPS combat.

Thanks, Sornin :) You have just given me three excellent reasons why I wouldn't be interested in the game and thus helped me save my pennies.

Hey guy's thanks for your ecouragment. This will have been my 2nd 360 to brick. Am I happy about it? No, but it could be alot worse. I got my 1st 360 a few weeks after launch and I have yet to pay for a new one. I have to admit that Microsoft has been very responsive and got me all the info I needed in minutes to ship my 360 asap. I think they have learned some pretty good lessons about hardware production this generation.

Yes, Borderlands was really good. If you don't like FPS's because they all seem the same and offer no depth then give it a try. It reminds me of Bioshock to a degree. It gives you just enough RPG element to keep your interest.

Well a friend of mine sent his system in on Thursday last week for a RROD. He got notification this morning that his system or a replacement was on its way to him. So he should have it no later than Monday! Not too shabby.

Of course he was able to keep playing on the 360. I lent him my backup system. LOL. I had so many RROD's that I ended up getting another and letting my wife use my old one once it was fixed. She rarely played it, usually Lego "insert which version here".

Oh and Boarderlands is on my XMAS wish list.  :)

The most recent Motherboard chipset for the 360 is devoid of all of the problems that have plagued 360s. If your console was manufactured in late 07 or later it will have the Jasper motherboard, which is the one you want.

That said, I bought my 360 on launch day and it still runs fine. I think the biggest problem with the Xbox errors is simply poor care. Treat it like a computer, clean it frequently, keep it ventilated, and youll never have a problem.

Also, Borderlands is pretty good. I recommend it for Co-op play, but if youre a solo player wait til it hits the bargain bins.
