I am having an odd problem with Mass Effect 2.

Basically, I had just landed on Illium and talked to the guide there. The game us running smoothly, and then BAM: all of a sudden the screen looks like a thermal goggles filter has been placed over it, and after about a second the game resumes to normal. Except for one thing, the frame rate now is remarkably lower. Maybe around 12fps.

I want to stress that I have been playing the game for about 18 hours with no problems. Except for once before.

This same thing happened to me when I first started playing the game, the prolouge on the Normandy. I got to a section with a lot of fire, and the game stuttered and stopped for a second, then resumed at a low framerate. I thought at first it was my system chugging from the fire effects, but it continued throughout the Cerberus base and all of the in-game cut scenes.

The glitch continued even after I restarted the game, the computer, and tried reloading an oder save game from before the glitch started. I also tried changing all of the graphics settings to the lowest possible. I tried starting it up for a few days, after that, then just gave up. So I shut down the game and didn't play it for a few weeks. Then I started it up again and it was working fine. I hadn't changed anything,

I really don't want to just wait and hope for the best now that I am so far into the game. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone Have an idea of what might have happened?

Thanks! =)

EDIT:

Here is my system set-up:

Laptop (Dell M6300)

OS: Microsoft Vista Business Service pack one (64 bit)

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50 Ghz

Graphics Card: NVidia Quadro FX 1600M

Direct X 10.0

You need to find out what that Quadro equates to.  It isn't a gaming card, but is a Workstation Production Card, and has a far different BIOS onboard, and most especially, it runs with greatly different drivers that are optimized for generating graphical images, not for displaying them in animated form.

Someone at the nZone forums may be able to assist you.  In here, we deal with the nVIDIA Geforce family, not any Quadro, and most of the regular readers are absent, so there aren't a lot of people to answer you that might have knowledge across both Geforces and Quadros.

Sounds like your laptop is most likely running too hot and throttles down in performance to protect itself from overheating/damage. Make sure you're playing a flat tabletop surface and not on having the laptop in your knees, on a tablecloth, carpet, bed, sofa etc which can hinder the airflow underneath the laptop.

If you've had the laptop for awhile it might be time to open it up and carefully clean the air intakes, fans and heatsinks of dust with a can of compressed air. Or perhaps just turn it in to dell for a technician for service, if you still have warranty.

The card seems ok performance wise. But since it seems to be a bussiness card (CAD, 3D programs etc) and it could be lacking some features. But since it was running ME2 fine for at least 18 hours with no problems it is probably heat issue.
