I did a quick search and couldn't find the answer so I apologize if this has already been asked but I was wondering after you recruit a group after completing an area (e.g. Mages from the Circle after defeating all the demons, Elves after helping the Dalish, etc.), they're visible in the camp and they ask for supplies such as runes for the mages or herbs for the elves which you can place in the "allies" chest. I was wondering does giving them supplies make a difference in the game. Also does it matter what you give them (e.g. giving them mages the cheap novice runes instead of the master./grandmaster runes).
Is it worth it to give Supplies for Allies at camp

I am wondering this too. I gave the Mages some runes, and the Redcliffe soldiers like 2 sovereigns... But I am not sure what exactly the benefit of this is. I figured I would get to this later in the storyline.

giving redcliffe forces 30 sovreigns = 720 xp which is a ton even at level 20

You gain exp...the troops don't seem to become much better. If you need stronger troops, just get the golems

I think it does make a difference my first time through i did not bother giving anything however the second time i gave thirty sovereigns and the redcliffe troops had frost enchanted maces as for the rest of the troops or if the maces are perhaps random i have no idea. But eventually the mage will say such as force has not blah blah and will always say it after this perhaps as a sign they are at their strongest possible upgrade strenght conversly the werewolves dont accept anything except a single nug.

Well, getting exp alone is good enough. I'd rather trade death root and gems, and runes that I do not use for exp. In my opinion, the troops are only good for taking some pressure of yourself in the last battles.

I had redcliffe troops with frosted maces and I hadn't given them a red cent.

I donated supplies to all four groups, while the dwarves only got a gem or two the mages and knights both got huge amounts of supply donations, and comparing their performance in the final battle the knights/dwarves didn't seem too different in terms of potency.

Am playing on easy level at the moment and apart from the final battle and the entrance to fort drakon I'd say the allies aren't really needed (former using either dwarfs or humans for soaking up some of archdemon and the midfight darkspawn swarms, latter for using elfs to help take out all the inital ranged fighters) do they make a bigger difference on harder levels?
Whilst I can see a slight benefit from getting xp for camp donations, I think it would have been better if it actually meant something to how they are prepared for aiding in the final onslaught. Granted I can see how it would make it so much easier if have them beefed up, just seems a bit feeble that it is just a xp booster in comparison to the Redcliffe fight where if I remember rightly getting all of the people you can to fight and getting the smithy to do the repairs does help in some way.

I donated about 90g in total to the Knights, about 30 or so gems to the Dwarves, any runes I found were given to the Mages (I didn't really find myself using too many...), and all Deep Mushrooms and Elfroot (of which I had about 30) I gave to the Elves. The end result of this were that I only had to summon the knights during the final battle with the Archdemon, and some were still left at the end (normal difficulty). I never had to call in the other armies. But donating to whichever you want to use in the final battle (or sooner, if you needed it) will give them better gear, and more resilience as far as I've been able to tell.

Best way to do this is buying Elfroot from the Dalish camp and turning htem in... Cheapest way to get to 25 easily... Credit to Velmyn(http://social.bioware.com/57147/) for that....

I had saved up all of the runes I found in game and gave all of them away, except grandmaster ones (can't donate them anyway which is good, would suck to accidentally give them away), mage contact said that "there won't be stronger army seen since the days of Tevinter imperium" or some such. Saved up every root and shroom and a gem too and donated to every other party as well and they were all amazed up to their brows. And I thought that it'll make any difference, like make Redcliffe soldiers come all out in good heavy armor and what not.
Nope.
Same shmucks as always, they were. I mean, sure, the fact that I get XP from it is a good thing, I got very nice XP from all the stuff I saved up and donated but that wasn't my goal. I WANT to improve my armies and it's lame when you spend so much resources on them, get messages saying like they're improved now and then, in the end, you see that nothing changed. If I donate resources, and a lot of them, then I'd also like to see the real improvement in my forces, else it feels like a lie. Sure, lie with an XP on top but still a lie.

Actually they do change, first play through I hadn't given anyone anything, then I gave Redcliffe a ton of money. Like 100 sovereigns.
They were wearing different (and better) armour this time around and they soaked up a ton of damage before even thinking of keeling over.

I think the money you give Redcliffe does go into armor upgrades. I held those troops in reserve for the roof fight at the Fort, and by the time it was over, only lost 2.

You couldn't give anything to the werewolves since they are already awesome.
So I assumed it is for upgrading armor/weapons and spells to the magi.

I donated a lot of runes to my mages,
Saved them for the Arch demon, and none of them dropped. Very nice to see, poor little Arch demon did his I will stand over here where you can reach me and breathe fire at you, and preceeded to get nuked mightily.

I use the Elves in the same way.

I played once and donated all novice/journey men runes to the mages (well and 30 gold to redcliff and some gems and all ingredients I randomly collected but didn't use those armies) I summoned the mages for the Archdemon (on hard) and in the end I had like 7 left.. they killed all chaff fast and held their own against the archdemon. (IMHO the ballista's are overpowered though.. killed his last 20 % just firing a ballista)
