After the cutscene with the Normandy and Joker at the beginning of the game, and after you wake up after the Lazarus project, I am prompted to take my pistol and armor from the locker. I know exactly where the locker is (hard to miss with the big arrow and box); however, I am unable to pick it up. I know my spacebar works, and I double checked the keymapping to make sure I was using the right key, but I simply can not pick it up. I tried fixing my resolution, but I'm still unable to pick up the pistol from the locker and move on. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem and how I can stop it? (I'm on a PC a bit under min specs)

The entire game is affected by Low End video limitations, and there is no such thing as slightly under the minimum.  Basically, you either have the minimum, or you don't play.  Interaction between the player and the game environment relies on a feedback function that is controlled by video card performance, and Low End graphics is just so slow that the game never is able to recognize that you want to interact.

The official requirements for the video are quite extensively documented with the many unsupported graphics cards listed (I've added a few even older ones in the lists below):

MINIMUM Graphics
Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon X1300, HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, and HD 4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

RECOMMENDED
ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, or better, recommended
NOTES: For the best results, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and audio cards. Laptop or mobile versions of the above supported video cards have not had extensive testing and may have driver or other performance issues. As such, they are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.  Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

You should note that the 6800 LE and 6800 XT are quite bad cards compared to the other 6800s, and even the "Vanilla" 6800 is at best a borderline part.  Stick with the 6800s with GS, GT, and Ultra in the names if you have older hardware you can (or must) use.  For whatever video you have now, if you can run at the equivalent of 800 by 600 screen resolution, you may be able to interact when there is no combat or only a few things in view (look at the floor, for instance), to give you some idea of game play while you contemplate getting the appropriate upgrade(s).

Usually low framerates mean not being able to interact with objects. But the new patch is out and one of the changes is the following:

Fixed an issue where under certain circumstances, spacebar would not
activate objects.

I don't know if by 'circumstances' they mean low framerates but if you haven't installed patch 1.02 already then you should definitely try it.

I think they mean the briefing room glitch where the door would be locked (red hologram).

Pick Coalesced.Ini and check if "LensFlares" is set to "True". If not, use the Mass Effect 2 Coalesced Compiler and set to True the LensFlares. They should be work.

IMO, you are digging in the graveyard and are off-topic as well.

Anything over six months old is TOO OLD to dig up again, and you also are off topic (patching is unrelated to problems with bad, substandard hardware).

This is usually a framerate issue. I said a year ago the patch might fix it, but later problem reports taught me this isn't the case. Post your specs so we can either rule out or confirm slow hardware.
