So I borrowed a friends copy of DA for the xbox 360.  I've been playing for about 120 hours....man, talk about bang for your buck.  I just completed the Dwarf Quests and I'm only 22% through the game.  OMFG!

Since I've been enjoying it so much, I've decided to buy it.  I'm trying to decide if I should get the PC version or the XBOX 360 version.  There is a nice version available on Steam which has some of the extra DLC available.

I, like many others, wish the saved games were transferrable between platforms, and that DLC was applied to both as well.  However, since that isnt possible, I thought I'd ask.

Which platform might I enjoy more?  I have an i7-960 machine with ATI HD 5870 card.  I'm assuming the graphics will be better, but I suppose both could be the same.  Which one is easier to manage inventory and track quests? I have a dual monitor setup and it would be really cool if we could have all the quest and inventory on one screen w/ gameplay on the other...but...wishful thinking.

I guess I'd also need to get an xbox controller for PC to fully enjoy it on the PC.....but I thought I'd ask.

So yeah, guessing DLC still doesn't apply to both platforms (right?) and curious which would give me more bang for the buck.  Thanks.

I'd say 95% of the people on here are going to jump in and say PC. And they're probably right for a number of reasons.

Better graphics and control for starters. You seem to have the hardware needed. Also, mods (additions to the game made by the community) are widespread on the PC version but unavailable for consoles. This includes a large number of bug fixes that Bioware has not done themselves....and we don't know if they ever will. Right now the bugs with the Xbox version (and PS3 version) can really ruin your gameplay. They're working on a patch, however, so that might change soon.

All in all, I'd say the scales tip heavily in favor of the PC version. I play on Xbox and I like it but a game like this has more potential with a PC setup.

Yeah, I started reading about the folks facing corruption save issues 6 or 7 months back...made me a little nervous. Any thoughts on buying the game through Steam? I'm to understand that the DRM is less of a headache, but do we miss out on things like registering our game here on BioWare?

$50 seems like a good price considering all the extra content that comes with it, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has had a bad experience with the Steam version of the game.

Thanks for the quick reply.

On the PC you can download projects from the builder community. So if you like mods and "player fixes" or anything along those roads: PC. if you love showing of your XBOX achievements (like me...) perhaps the xbox version? I'm considering getting the xbox version myself...

On the PC you got loads of other programs and so on... People want to chat, you get distracted watching facebook (or these forums, or whatever), machinimas and/or anything else.

The xbox (to me) is all about playing the game "focusing" your attention (and pleasure, relaxation) to playing!

Hope it helps. :)

Wicked pretty much covered it. I have the PC version and love all the mods like better looking light armor for my rogue as well as extra adventures those in the community have made. Check out http://www.dragonagenexus.com/ to see some for yourself beforehand. Also, since I purchased my game as a digital download from direct2drive it came with the Stone Prisoner DLC and the Blood Dragon armor included. Not the deluxe edition, just the regular one, so am a happy camper. And even without a disc it was still a breeze to transfer everything, my characters included to my new computer. Only mentioned this because it is another example of the flexibility vs limitations. Though really, again as said, just the fact that bugs can be fixed would be reason enough in my book to go PC.

Cheers.

I saw someone playing on the 360 and it looked like a completely different game. There's very little tactical control and you have like 1/5 of the abilities/spells readily available. It seems almost inhumane to make someone play a game like that.

In the Xbox version's defense, I NEVER use the hoykeys. The radial wheel, once you get used to it, is vastly superior and I can pause/call up an ability very quickly.

I've been a console gamer for years, so I figured I'd want a "joystick" on the PC version. I've been told that mouse/keyboard is superior even for FPS games, but it will probably take me awhile to retrain. Looks like PC it is...after all I already have the xbox 360 game still on loan. I like the idea of a WoW style game without the 2 year commitment :). I would be nice to have a console fantasy RPG that allowed for limited cooperative play, but I guess it just isn't a big enough genre to make the jump.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Let me know if buying through Steam is a bad idea, otherwise I think I'll get it sometime next week.

You mean to say that if I order the hard copy from EA.com, I will be able to immediately download the game as well? I guess I'll have to see how the prices stack up and if they give any expansion, DLC with it.

Looks like the Digital Deluxe edition is $15 cheaper on Steam (sorry if mentioning that is violation of terms).  So the only reason to buy it there would be if we can't register it and/or use mods?  Anyone?

Also, guess I learned something else I need to be wary of.  I'm running only Windows 7 here at home...and it doesn't seem to be on the compatible list.  Guess I need to research more.

Thanks.

Hey MGHolley,

Getting through Steam isn't a problem. All DLC will install properly, but be warned that you have to buy the Awakening version of Steam. Chances are that it could work out to be the more expensive option, even if you do get Digital Deluxe. I recommend looking around at... Whatever game stores you have and Amazon as it could be cheaper. If not, go for Steam.

I will warn you though, if you do have a download limit and/or a poor internet connection, that Dragon Age is a huge download. Think it's about 16-17GB, perhaps a little bigger.

I'm a newcomer to the DA world but I couldn't imagine playing this one on the 360, purely from default settings with no add-ons etc the tactical view/hotkeys is enough to sell me but add in moving through the interface and a more challenging game (something sorely lacking in the past generation) its really a no-brainer. I have a decent machine and run everything on max with no trouble but the game really doesn't seem to have high system requirements.

I consider myself non-bias as about 80% of my gaming is via 360/PS3 these days and generally only use my PC for gaming when its flat-out the better platform (other the graphics) or an exclusive.

A PC wins in specs, but a console is better for community. So for most single player games it's better to go with PC, unless you have friends with the same game and want to party it up (as in XBL party).

With that kind of computer, you should definately get it for PC. Dragon Age was designed first and foremost for the PC, so you'll be able to enjoy it in its native environment with crisper textures and higher resolution than on the 360. Plus, having tried both, the combat is just so much better on a PC - you won't need to spend half of your time in a radial menu, which is a major plus.

PC all the way...its a RPG, time consuming, mods...why the hell would you want it for the console?

well, you need to wait until you get it. you have to enter the serial number into the eadm to activate your digital copy. but then you could install with the digital copy and have the hard copy too. although not technically listed as compatible, there are a lot of people playing it with windows 7.

Actually, it is technically listed as compatible with Win7. It's right on the box under the System Requirements and recommended specs.

MGHolley, since it seems you have a rig that can easily handle this game, I'd recommend the PC version. Not due to any console vs PC bias, but because the PC version allows you to use mods if you want, the graphics are somewhat nicer, and you get the tactical overhead view.

*edit* BTW, I'm running it on both a Windows XP 32 bit rig and a Windows 7 64 bit rig.

PC win over xbox 360 this time because of mods.

Believe me, once you've played with mods like More hair styles and Dragon Age Redesigned you will throw away your xbox copy.

Dragon Age Redesigned is a great mod. Almost all of the major characters you will meet including your your companions get such a good overhaul to better match their lore or you can opt for the aesthetic changes. Either way PC versions has mods, overhead tactical view, better graphics even better with mods and if you have a the hardware you can always play at 60+ fps unlike the 360 where the frame rate drops frequently.

The advantage of the console version is that you know that the game will DEFINITELY work on your console. With the PC, it's a bit of a hit or miss.

Though as a console player myself I envy those PC gamers who have all these wonderful mods available to them. So it really depends on what you feel is important... if mods aren't your thing then having the console version will be sufficient.

Common exaggeration would be the "limited" usefulness (the "OMG, U HAV TO UPGRADE EVERY TWO MONTHS" argument) of a gaming PC, which can be in excess of four years without upgrades.

PC all the way, day and year. Partially because of mods, customizability and superior looks.

Just throwing my two coppers, it all depends on the person's taste.
