there's no real need for extra graphics or CPU power just yet, and the public's going to have enough of new control mechanisms between the Kinect, Move and Wii, and Nintendo have already set the standards for next-generation portables with the 3DS, so...
what's there left to do?
IMO, There's still one niche that's untapped: a single system for both traditional big-screen play and on-the-go gaming.
Imagine: a PlayStation 4 that comes in the form of.. a PSP2!
Bear with me: While docked, it'd be just like any other high-end console, BUT there would also be a new breed of games that would seamlessly "downgrade" to a different kind of experience when you "undock" and take it with you just like any other Portable...
For example, Dragon Age: when the system is undocked, you'd still be able to access the Codex, or watch special cinematics that show what's happening "meanwhile" in the game world, or even play that Dragon Age Journeys minigame! or if it was Fallout 3, you would be able to Pass Time in the game world while tinkering with your inventory, or just listening to the Wasteland's radio stations.
of course, one of the best things about something like that would be: you'd share the same player profile across both modes, i.e. one login, single set of Achievements, savegames, social stuff, etc. so like, if it was an XBOX, you'd still be logged on Live and chat with your friends while it's undocked.
So yeah. IMO that's something I've yet to see any of the major companies discuss about bringing anytime soon (even though you can kind of see some elements of that with Wii/DS interaction in games like that Pokemon whatever) but something like that could open such an awesome entire new genre of gaming, that couldn't be emulated on current systems.
