I'm new at this game. I'm in the Wilds. I want to just keep my party members together to pick off the enemies one by one for a particular battle. But even though I put the tactics setting on defensive for my other three characters, they run off to fight enemies I don't want them to. It seems like the solution to this is blindingly simple but I don't seem to get it. Please help. I need tutoring!

Try placing all members on 'H"- Hold, then send them one at a time to the destination of choice. But they will not continue to move/ fight unless you command them to do so.

Also take a look at the Tactics screen and disable them if need be.

I had the same problem, when fighting the 3 Drakes in the Temple near the Ashes, I set everyone to attack a single Drake so I could take them down one by one, but each time I did it they attacked twice then ran off and split up, leading to an all round party death.

What I suggest is selecting the whole party and setting everyone to attack, keep the whole party selected through the fight and whenever someone runs off, re-attack the one you want and it should help.

Plus taking manual control of allies as they run away to use a special ability on another enemy works, if you manualy move them away to cancel the ability then again go for the original, it works its just keeping yourself aware of your party.

Defensive is the wrong behaviour. Set Alistair and Jory to aggressive. Daveth, too, if dual weaponing (my preference), or set him to ranged if relying on his bow. Also, set the condition for your tactics to Enemy: Any or Enemy: Nearest Visible.

@Turran - keeping the whole party selected is crippling because they will all just auto attack and not use any talents or spells.

The easiest way should be to use the 'Enemy: target of controlled party member' tactic as their first attack tactic. They should then wait for you to choose a target, then wail on it with you.

I usually have everyone attack the same enemy as the tank. Not just attack, but all offensive talents, with regular attack as the last one. The tank would attack "nearest visible".

Usually I'll have the tank set to aggressive and everyone else default, so it's only the tank who runs ahead, gets aggro, then everyone else follows. If my pc is the tank, then I'll set any other melee fighters to defensive (to stay close to the pc and not run off), and other ranged party members to default (passive is also nice for ranged). I've found it much easier to keep my party members alive this way, because the tank can rush ahead and get the enemy's attention, cast taunt and etc, before the enemy even knows that the rest of the party is there.

Wouldn't your Ranged party members be better with Ranged behavior?

You guys are the best! With your hints, and some trial and error on my part, I should learn how to control my party in a manner that will allow me to enjoy this wonderful game the way it's meant to be played. Good looking out.

Something I learned the hard way is that it is better to have no more than two characters doing melee attacks on the same target. More than that and they start to get in each other's way. On easier settings it doesn't matter but on nightmare it's one of those little things that can make a big difference.

This game is too hard for me right now. I'm getting frustrated. I think I'll stick to Torchlight, Diablo 2, and Divinity 2. Controlling one character is all I can handle. Perhaps I'll pick up Dragon Age again when I have fewer distractions.

It's true that Dragon Age:Origins has a pretty steep learning curve, but reading the forums and the wiki helps a lot and you can find a lot of good ideas for builds and such.

When I first started all I did was rush into melee battle and wail away, and predictably enough I got killed, a lot. But the game fascinated me and I stuck with it, and it has turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games I have played in many years, once you get midway onto the learning curve.

After that it just keeps getting better and better.

The human noble origin is one of the easiest to play once you get the hang of it, because there are plenty of opportunities to set ambushes and take on your enemies one at a time with ranged weapons instead of all at once in melee battle. Hint: put your party on hold and use dog to lure your enemies to you 1 or 2 at a time.

I hope that even if you decide not to play Dragon Age for awhile that you read the forums and the wiki a bit just to get ideas about what has worked for other people. You also might consider downgrading the difficulty level that you're playing at until you get the hang of the game.

Only you know your own tolerance for frustration, but if you play like you're invulnerable you'll die, a lot, especially in the beginning and probably be frustrated. Until you build up your attributes enough to be able to shrug off a normal hit you have to play as if the AI can easily kill you, because it can. Until you can find some decent armor and weapons, your attacks will be nowhere near as devastating as you might think and survivability way less than you would expect, so you have to plan your battles and attacks with that in mind, even on normal mode.

But beheading the Howe knight and getting the Executioner's helm in Cousland castle, when it happens for the first time, makes it all worthwhile.

At least, that's my opinion.

I played my first Warden almost entirely on Easy settinga in order to learn. My second Warden was a mage, so I increased the difficulty in order to learn of Friendly Fire. Now I play mostly on Nightmare, but still occasionally decrease to Easy in order to speed play, or get by some insufferable encounter.

Not to be an ass...but exploiting the AI by engaging the enemies piecemeal is pretty obviously not "the way the game is meant to be played". Of course it's a singleplayer game and you can do whatever you want, but it's no different than modding your stats higher or otherwise cheating.

Actually, you are plain wrong. To consider Pulling cheating is your (very) personal opinion, and has no base in fact whatsoever.
