Here is my idea for some research options to upgrade the Hammerhead tank. I feel that the tank is very agile, but it severely lacks when it comes to, well, being a tank.  Feel free to comment or propose your own.

After Receiving the Hammerhead

Ablative Coating - Multiplies the hammerhead's health by 1.2 (5000 Palladium)
Smal Omnigel Injector - Reduces the time before repairs start by 5% (5000 Platinum)

After Completing Project Firewalker

Biotic Mass Reduction - Allows the Hammerhead to stay at the top of its jump for 25% longer, additionally, the Hammerhead's regular and booster speed increases by 5% (6000 Element Zero)
M-44 Hephaestus Gun - Adds a machine gun to the Hammerhead, selectable by opening the weapons wheel and switching to the Hephaestus Gun. Would require cooldown (NOT FINITE AMMO) (Same as swapping weapons when on foot) (10000 Iridium)
M-44 Hephaestus Incendiary Ammo - Adds incendiary ammo for the Hephaestus Gun* IONLY with incendiary Ammo capable Shepard or Squadmate IN PARTY (10000 Palladium)
M-44 Hephaestus Disruptor Ammo - Adds disruptor ammo for the Hephaestus Gun* ONLY with disruptor Ammo capable Shepard or Squadmate IN PARTY (10000 Palladium)

*Ammo upgrades for the Hephaestus Gun would appear as seperate options from each other. By opening the weapons wheel you'd find; missiles, M-44 Hephaestus, M-44 Hephaestus (Incendiary), M-44 Hephaestus (Disruptor) etc...

After Completing Horizon

Mk. II Missiles - Increases Hammerhead missile damage by 10% (7500 Iridium)
Heavy Alloys - Increases Hammerhead's health from 1.2 to 1.4 (15000 Palladium, requires Ablative Coating)
Large Omnigel Injector - Reduces time before repairs start from 5% to 15% (15000 Platinum, requires Small Omnigel Injector)
Heavy Refinery - Doubles the amount of resources gathered thorugh Hammerhead resource recovery (7500 Palladium)
M-44 Hephaestus Cycling Rounds - Multiplies the firing rate of the Hephaestus Gun (on all ammo types) by 1.1

After Completing Thane's Loyalty Mission

M-44 Hephaestus Shredder Ammo - Adds Shredder Ammo for the M-44 Hephaestus Gun. ONLY with Shredder Ammo capable Shepard or Thane IN PARTY. (15000 Palladium)

After Completing Jack's Loyalty Mission

M-44 Hephaestus Warp Ammo- Adds Warp Ammo for the M-44 Hephaestus Gun. ONLY with Warp Ammo capable Shepard or Jack IN PARTY (15000 Palladium)

After Completing Garrus' Loyalty Mission

M-44 Hephaestus Armor-Peircing Ammo
- Adds Armor-Peircing Ammo for the M-44 Hephaestus Gun. ONLY with Armor-Peircing Ammo capable Shepard or Garrus IN PARTY (15000 Palladium)

After Completing Overlord

Enhanced Virtual Intelligence - 20% more damage to synthetic enemies (20000 Iridium)
Geth Vehicle Sheilding - Provides a directional** sheild for the Hammerhead with 30% the Hammerhead's base health (FREE if playing on modes HARDER THAN Normal, else 20000 Platinum)

**Sheilds would be split into forward, rear, left, and right. Your left sheild could be down and your forward sheild at full power. To equalize power to all sheilds (to recover a lost sheild) press x. This would decrease the strength of all functional shields in order to bring the missing one back online. For instance, if forward, rear, and left were at 100%, but right was totally down, then pressing X would bring every sheild to 75%

While a lot of these upgrades may seem useless considering the few missions we have to utilize the Hammerhead, I believe they'll be more useful as Bioware rolls off some more DLC.

Thoughts?

I can't believe the devs didn't think of this themselves.

This sounds like the best way to kill two birds with one stone: improve the capabilities of the Hammerhead to specs that won't drive players crazy and give people a reason to continue gathering minerals.

That way people could be super prepared for the next DLC which calls for the Hammerhead. (Which I suspect all will in some way, shape, or form)

Added the Heavy Refinery

My two cents:

The Hammerhead has an on-board VI not AI.

Otherwise, I like the idea to make the Hammerhead upgradable.

Personally you don't need to add .1 and .2 to health, you need shields or some form of reactive heavy armor, OR +50-100% health, because right now it is like flying a paper kite rather than a armored vehicle.

Also the missiles need to do 50-100% more damage to heavy targets, and maybe add a secondary weapon, like a machine gun or Heavy cannon. The seeking missiles are ok, but get real, 20-30 to destroy a gun that can kill you in just a few seconds direct fire??!!??!!

No Shields?? Mako had shields and was tougher, and I still wanted to get out and fight, now I still do but can't!!

The Hammerhead right now is a paper tiger more than a deadly shark. Great idea, sorry execution.

I'd honestly just settle for a health bar and mini map, and hope it's not back for ME3. My opinion.

I think part of the challenge was to simply get the hell out of the way after letting it target you close to one of the shield generators.

Why would you want a health bar for the Hammerhead? I've heard this from multiple people but I don't get it.

If you're on fire, hide. That's all you need to know.

Because I like to hide BEFORE it takes one last shot to blow me up.

Actually I wasn't talking about the big Geth gun, I was talking about the little suckers around the data packets and the like.  You know, the guns I used to take out in ME1 with a sniper rifle in about 5-7 shots, instead of spamming 20 missiles at them from a paper car!!  Sit down in one of thier ranges and see how long the HH lasts, just try going toe to toe with one let alone two.  You either do the psycotic hamster routine or back away and hit them from outside the AI range with the fire and forgets.  BORING!!

At least when the Mako was overpowered by opponents I could get out and make it real fight!!

Or how about this upgrade:

Start Over (15000 iridum): Hammerhead turns into the Mako

What a waste of Iridium.
Hammerhead with shields> Mako

The speed, maneuverability and firepower for the Hammerhead are sufficient IMO.

Seriously, if it were heavily armored too, it'd be overkill.

I didn't like it at first and I still prefer the Mako but once I got used to it, the Hammerhead is pretty handy. You just have to use your strengths with the vehicle and not pretend you're a Abrams tank.

It's tempting.  I  am however getting fond of the forward boost on the Hammerhead.  If the Mako at least came with a high gear to speed up a little then I'd go for it.

The only way to use it properly is to pretend you're not in a tank. Even on foot Shepard could probably last longer.

While ideas to boost the HH are welcome the one point we all have to remember is that the HammerHead is an INFANTRY FIGHTING VEHICLE. Basically that means your squad gets onboard and heads off to wherever. When fighting breaks out the squad dismounts and moves up on foot while the vehicle moves off and provides suppressing fire. The problem is that BioWare insists on making us use it as a tank whereas if we JUST had the ability to get out of the damn thing they'd solve the issue.

I did this a lot with the Mako just for fun (and for more xp), even against a Thresher Maw or Geth Colossus.

I thought I read something about the Hammerhead being upgradeable in "Overlord." Maybe I misread.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!!

The "Fireflyer DLC"

Many were complaining about the Hammerhead and so now we present the brand-new "Fireflyer" pack with an improved Hammerhead. It has now a boost that lasts twice as long! To make it feel realistic, however, we decided that such a performance can only work through reduced weight of the vehilce. So the Hammerhead armor was reduced as well as its shield generator. ENJOY!

The Fireflyer DLC, now avaiable for only 2000 BioWare points.
