Firefly (TV) and Serenity (Movie) - sci-fi western that geeks everywhere still obsess over.
I second Blade Runner...and would throw in Metropolis if you can sit through a silent movie.
Lastly, I would add in Freespace (game). Theres no "choose your own" story path...and no romance at all, but the story of Mass Effect took a number of cue's from it...and it still has some of the best story telling in games to date.

★ Planescape: Torment.
★ Planescape: Torment!
★ PLANESCAPE: TORMENT!!!
↑ That will actually bring you the enjoyment of both games and books in the same package: There's a lot of reading of an truly epic tale.
Also try Fallout 3 for a nice blend of sci-fi with some fantasy'ish elements. Both PS:T and FO3 have some of the most flexible "choose your own storylines" in RPGs ever.

Forgot Earth by David Brin and Grass by Sheri Tepper. Also, if you want to read something from this decade, try author China Mieville. His books are insane weird-like fantasy/fiction, especially Perdido Street Station
"Earth" I read about a year ago......Indeed a good book.

If you want a little more heavier reading and want to invest more time in a book then i can recommend "The Reality Dysfunction" by Peter F. Hamilton. Space opera at it's best with more or less like Farscape/Mass Effect universe. Started reading it a while ago, so far so good.

If you are really into rather brutal fantasy and political intrigue I would recommend George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. It is some seriously good reading, and you never know what will happen next. I also second the Ender series by Card for sci-fi, and anything by Lovecraft.
Yesssss, A Song of Ice and Fire series is AWESOME!!!!

Now they do have books/comics to read.
Additionally I would recommend Starcraft novels to anyone who enjoys ME, has many of the elements minus the romance.
