My PC warrior is at level 13 now, and I have yet to figure out how to choose a specialization.

When I hit level 7, I was told I could specialize in something (I want to specialize as a Champion), but it wouldn't let me choose any of the four specialization icons in the Level Up screen.  I am about to hit level 14 which opens up yet another specialization slot, but I haven't been able to choose my first one yet!!  (And the manual and Prima Guide are worthless: they state you can, but neither tell you how.)

How do you do it?

And if you say I have to buy some tome that costs 50-100 gold to unlock the specialization, I am going to be very annoyed (at BioWare).  I'm halfway through the game, and I have yet to ever have more than 7 gold pieces to my name (that's not an exaggeration, either).  It's not that I spend money; I never get any!  My party is still using the worst equipment and worst armor.

Champion you unlock by completing the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest in Redcliffe. Some other specializations you unlock by getting an NPC to like you enough to teach it to you.

Redcliff is your only hope to unlock champion specialization as far as i know. Just don't level until the end of the redcliff. If you want anything else get a book or have a character teach it to others. You will need to be on good terms with the characters in order for them to teach others anything. Other than Dog teaching Alastair to smell badly. Dog does that for free.

Templar can be learned from Alistair. Champion from the Urn of Sacred Ashes questline. Berserker from Oghren. Reaver can be taught by Kulgrim, the evil cultist you encountered on the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest.

To be more specific; Spirit Healer can also be taught by Wynne.

Arcane Warrior is part of the elven storyline (Something "Beast")

And Blood Mage can also be learned by Kulgrim in the Urn of Sacred Ashes questline. (He'll offer you that, unless you are a warrior)
