Hello everyone,
I've just bought Mass Effect today (EA Value Games version) and am eager to play it. I've installed and patched and when I press the icon the splash menu shows up fine. When I press play the game though...nought. My processor usage spikes a bit it seems for  a while but the game doesn't load, no error message, no nothing, it just...gives up.

My computer is:
AMD Phenom™ II X2 550  3.1ghz
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
4gb ram
windows 7 64 bit

Any ideas?
Also whats this filtering mode stuff about? I've tried it on point and antiscoptic but am not sure what it means.

Enabling XP Compatibility and/or Administrative Rights would be the go-to fixes for Vista/7, as it should be working. You might also want to try running the Mass Effect executable directly from its directory, skipping the launcher.

Filtering mode helps make textures look better, at the cost of performance, on better settings. Anisotropy and Trilinear filtering are actually separate things that can be used together for the best result, but for some reason they are set up as mutually exclusive inside the game & config utility. I recommend checking out the TweakGuides.com guide to Mass Effect. The Advanced Tweaking section lists some (details on the .ini to edit are on the linked page, the Trilinear= and MaxAnisotropy= settings are listed on the next page.)
