Question about ME2's keyboard controls

I just recently completed Mass Effect 1, and I've gotten very used to the way I have the key binds set up. Today I played the ME2 demo and noticed that several keys are set up quite differently than in ME1. For instance, for some odd reason they've got Use/Cover/Sprint forced into the same key mapping. I prefer having Use set as my Enter key, cover (crouching in ME1) as my right Shift key, and sprint as right Control.

Another strange thing is that you couldn't jump in ME1, but could crouch. Now, in ME2, you can't crouch but you can jump. Well, sort of. There's a "jump" binding for vehicles. Why did they remove the ability to crouch in ME2?

Anyway, on to my question: The demo doesn't seem to have any *.ini files like ME1. Is it not possible at all now to customize your key binds? I find it so awkward using the same key to open doors, duck for cover and sprint. If possible, I'd like to map them all to separate keys. Can this be done?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I'll simplify the question: How do you customize the key binds in ME2 using BIOInput.ini? Does ME2 even have BIOInput.ini? (The demo doesn't, so I'm asking if the full version does.)

You still automatically crouch in cover if it is only a chest-high wall and not a head-high one you stick Shepard to. As to why you aren't allowed to crouch out of cover anymore, I guess there just wasn't much point. It was only ever needed for accuracy, which isn't a problem now that weapon talents are gone - either Shep is good with a weapon type, or doesn't even carry it.

Jumping still isn't in the main game, it's just for the fancy new hovercraft you use in some of the DLC. The Mako had a similar thing with its jets, though the new Hammerhead is able to maintain forward momentum as well.

There is still a BioInput.ini, but like most of the .inis, it's packed into a file in ME2's install directory called Coalesced. See Coalesced Editor. (You can also use a variety of other tools like Notepad++ - anything that respects the binary formatting of the file - but Coalesced is a nice tool with a specialized layout and it automatically backs up the original for you.)

I have some bad news for you though, here's the binding for Space Bar:
( Name="SpaceBar", Command="Shared_Action" )
There may be Command= parameters for cover/sprint/use individually, but there's no example to go off of for the actual command name, so I don't know how you're going to figure out how to separate the three actions.

For what it's worth, I personally found it pretty easy to get used to. The only awkwardness is having Sprint & Cover combined while in combat - it can save your ass when you mean to slide right into cover, but every now and then it gets a little overzealous (or my steering is a little off).

Thanks for the info. I bought the full game earlier today and after playing it for a while, like you said, I actually easily adapted to the new Use/Cover/Sprint single key setup. It's not nearly as bad as I expected. And rather than mess with the new file system (instead of the old BIOInput.ini), I'll just leave it as-is.

Thanks again!

I have a solution for anyone who wants me2 to contlol like me1.

The changes you need to make to the controls are as follows:

Change Move sqad members from Q & E to the Left and Right arrowkeys.

Swap the controls for the power bar so running and cover is SHIFT and the power bar is SPACEBAR then (THIS IS CRUCIAL) set E as a secondary option. (The impulse is to press E when interacting with stuff and to sprint using SHIFT).

The rest is a matter of preference. I personally do it like this.

R is reload,

F is put away weapon

WHEELUP is mele (makes for uitra responsive mele combat.

WHEELDOWN is change weapon (hardly need to change in both directions with only 5 guns total.

The rest is default if memory serves me.

I changed all my ME1 controls before I started playing so when I played ME2 the transition would be easy. They should pay me to design control schemes for PC games cos I kick ass at it.B)

I hope this helps some of you.

Wow, thread necromancy never dies, eh?

Man, I never thought of the weapon swap/melee thing with the wheel. I like it.

I like to modify control settings to my own, because my left pinkie finger has gone almost completely numb over the years (too much gaming and too much typing at work? not sure). And if it's not numb, it's painful. Anyway, I try to take out every key-punch possible that is required of my left pinkie finger...no shift keys required to run, no Z-key to reload...anything that I will be hitting repeatedly, because I can't tell which key my pinkie finger is resting on anyway.
Now, if I could just get used to using ESDF instead of WASD, I'd be in heaven. It's one of the only manual functions that are so ingrained that I can't override since playing Doom in the Dark Ages. Stupid brain. :(
