My first Bioware game was Mass Effect 1 which I loved. But Dragon Age really impressed me and inpired me to try Knights of the Old Republic. After jumping through hoops to get it working on my 32 bit Vista laptop, I am amazed by how great it is! I'm 10 hours in and the game is really opening up. It helps that I'm a massive Star Wars fan.

Thanks BW for making Kotor - its cool to see how it inspired parts of both ME and DA. Can't wait to play Kotor II (which i hear is grat aswell). Shame that The Old Republic is an MMO - I think that a shiny new Kotor III would do really well. But thank you Dragon Age for introducing me to BW's past - i'm having a blast! Posted Image

KOTOR was my first Bioware game and after that, I played Mass Effect 1. After playing KOTOR, I then was inspired to check out the Star Wars movies. I basically got KOTOR on Xbox because I was starving for a rpg. I liked the similiarities between KOTOR and ME1, and since it's highly unlikely that a KOTOR 3 will ever be released, then Mass Effect was the next best thing. Similar setting, space travel, jedi/spectres, force powers/biotics, etc. After playing Mass Effect to death, I moved onto Dragon Age and haven't played much else since. Even though I got Mass Effect 2 back in January, I have yet to play it because of Dragon Age. I did open the game case to make sure that the coupon was inside though...

Kotor was my first Bioware game also. I only play Bioware games nowadays. ME and DA are great, but I still think Kotor is the best (I'm a huge star wars fan also).

@MonkeyChief117

10 hours in huh? Just you wait, it gets better and better and better.

The plots great - I love flirting with Bastila. Carth really reminds me of Kaiden - I even think its the same voice actor.

@Khayness - I use Vista and it was really difficult to get the game up and running. Theres plenty of help out there though. Check out this thread:

The first 10 hours were terrible for me in KoToR, could not stand Taris one bit. It was like a slightly less tedious version of the Deep Roads. Definitely get's much better so if your amazed at Taris, so if you're amazed now I expect you'll be blown away by the rest.

What is funny is that I was opposite. I played KotOR first, which made me second guess buying DA. I loved DA, but KotOR was just too damn boring. I mean it felt like a chore to play the entire game. I stopped playing after I left Dantooine. I think it might be because I hated Star Wars, but I don't know it was just very boring. Anyways, I wish they would make another Blade Runner game, now that movie beats the pants off of Star Wars.

I'm the opposite in that it was KOTOR that brought Bioware to my attention when it was released, that game blew me away on it's release and still holds up today. I've since went on to buy just about every game Bioware has made, barring Jade empire, and they are all amazing and hold up well today. God I love Minsc and Boo

I'm currently playing NWN and having a great time with it, in fact if you enjoy KOTOR I'd would say give NWN a whirl as they are pretty similar just set in different universes I feel. The story in NWN isn't as good as in KOTOR but there are literally 1000s of user made modules for NWN.

KOTOR is great. My first BioWare game was Baldur's Gate II, but I hated the DnD system it utilizes (still do, I maintain it just doesn't work in a crpg), so I was a bit sceptical about KOTOR before release, since I knew it would use DnD as well. Fortunately I found my worries were mostly unnecessary with KOTOR, since there the DnD system is much less intrusive and didn't hamper my enjoyement of the game even close to the degree it did with BG2. Thankfully they have ditched even its remains with TOR. :)

KOTOR 1 and 2 were both really fun. 2 was rushed, so didn't get finished, but was still well written and enjoyable.

As for Taris... I liked it. It was just frustrating not having a lightsaber for that long. Lots of fun side-quests and areas though. The Arena was a blast, Bendak Starkiller was awesome. So was swoop racing. Ahh... memories. I was really hoping for a long time that Bioware's "Next generation project" was a super secret KOTOR 3 which would bridge the gap and lead into TOR... but that's not bloody likely.

KotOR was my first BioWare game as well, and since playing that I've been a loyal customer of pretty much everything they've released since. Amazing game, gives me high hopes for the success of the MMO if the storytelling is even half as good as it was in the single-player game.

KOTOR is part of my personal holy trinity of utterly wondrous RPG experiences (along with Dragon Age and Vampire: Bloodlines). While it does look a little dated now, visually, the story and atmosphere of the game is raw Star Wars distilled into its purest form. I have completed it four times and will undoubtedly go back to it again some time soon.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, however, but in my opinion KOTOR II, while still very good, is an inferior game, badly hindered by being rushed to an early release on LucasArts orders.

After you finish the first, don't go on to the second.

The second is a very good game (albeit with a very bad ending) that ends on a sequel hook, and it'll leave you wanting more. And more than likely a sequel will never be made because Bioware would much rather make a crappy MMO instead of making another good KOTOR game.

What makes you say TOR is a crappy MMO? It hasn't even been released yet. And based on what I know of the game, I'd even go as far as saying that it's looking to become one of the greatest MMO games ever created - far from crappy in any case.

People really harp on Kotor 2, but really except for the ending it was solid. Great characters, good development, awesome plot... it just wasn't finished. It's still worth playing... and you can get restoration mods for the missing content.

Oh, and TOR, from what I understand, will be perfectly enjoyable as a solo experience as long as you don't want to PvP.

You misunderstand. I dont think it looks like a bad MMO. Rather, its MMO's in general that are bad: Monthly Fees, 'collect ten bear asses' quests, grinding and the general communities associated with them.

Ok, TOR will (supposedly) have a good story... So what?

  • I'll still have to pay every month.
  • I'll still have to listen to people asking for 'phr33 st00f pl0x'.
  • I'll still have to do quests that involve killing things and collecting their spleens.
And at the end of all that, it doesn't even matter. It's set a long while after KOTOR 1&2, so I doubt I'll get any closure on what happened to Revan, the Exile and their companions. I expect the most I'll find out is filler in the background revolving around the goddamn canon lightside Revan and the Exile.

But what really pisses me off, is the fact that TOR is what we get instead of KOTOR 3.

^Alright, I can undertand. I'm not the biggest fan of the MMO genre myself, but I still think those games have certain merits (and the community aspect isn't one of them, for me). I tend to solo MMOs anyway, so a more single player invested/storydriven MMO like TOR might be something I can enjoy. I'd advice you not to completely rule out the game so hastily either, at least not before it has been released. :)

Having been an ex  WOW junkie myself.  Finally off the WOW addiction been clean for close to a year now, haha.

Vast majority if not all MMO's are time sinks.  It's the only way to keep customers paying their monthly fee.  There is only so much variance of get quest at X, run to Y, kill endlessly for Z items then turn items back to X.  Rinse and Repeat 100000000000 times.

I dislike MMOs with a passion. Imagine this - 'collect 6 Wookie pelts' etc for the first 15 hours. Have you guys seen the E3 trailer for ToR though - it will blow your mind! (This is the HD version).

Since I prefer Sci-Fi to Fantasy, I prefer Kotor to DA. So far none of the characters in Kotor annoy me, whereas both Alistair and Ogren really got on my nerves - attempted humour but without any real wit. Mission and her Wookie also make a great double act - a feature which would have been cool in DA (having 2 characters which share a back story).

Oh and no Kotor spoilers please cos I'm still playing through it please lol!

KOTOR was my first Bioware game, too. It completely blew me away. I was raised on Star Wars, and actually being able to play in the Star Wars universe was amazing. I quickly followed that with KOTOR 2, which is still amazing, but was rushed, so it feels unfinished. Those two are probably my favorite games of all time. Actually, it would have to be The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind as my favorite game, followed by KOTOR 1 and 2.

Jennifer Hale, who voices Bastila, also voiced FemShep in the ME series and has done voice work for TOR. Rafael Sbarge, who voices Carth, also voices Kaidan. Courtenay Taylor, who voices Juhani, also voices Jack in ME2. Catherine Taber, who voices Mission, has done voice work for TOR.

While I would also have preferred a true KotOR 3, I think SWTOR will be interesting. It's a new medium for them try, and despite common misconceptions, MMOs have a lot of potential for developping a setting. As far as closure goes, I'm sure they'll drag some names along. We already know that Bastila's descendant is in there, and given the new extended background they came up for Revan and Malak, I'm sure they'll have a legacy of some sort that will be expanded on later on.

Coming back to Dragon Age - my first thought when I played it was of KotOR. Small number of classes, cinematic and story focus, over-the-shoulder camera while running around, smaller party than BG but with real companions instead of henchmen, etc. Also, choosing where you want to go after the initial exposition reminded me a lot of the planet system in KotOR. All in all, I thought Dragon Age was more a fantasy KotOR than a BG spiritual successor. Not a bad thing, though it's not what I expected. I liked the story and setting of KotOR better though
