I'm curious, what other games are out there that are a) similar to Dragon Age, or B) similar to the Elder Scrolls, kind of game? I've heard about Drakensang, and maybe the Witcher applies here? thanks in advance.

a) Drakensang and its upcoming prequel, and many older RPGs like Icewind Dale, Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldur's Gate. Closest game is Neverwinter Nights 2.

B) Gothic series, Risen, Two Worlds and upcoming Arcania: Gothic Tale, Two Worlds 2.

People like to compare The Witcher to DA:O because of that silly marketing strategy what involves screaming "Mature Game, omg" every time they announce anything about the game. It's not similar at all, but it's a great game nevertheless.

What virumor said, but I'd give Dark Messiah of Might and Magic a go aswell, it's a pure fun first person swordplay/magic/backstabbing game.

Similar in what way? Tonally, aesthetically, gameplay, game style?
If you want something that plays like Dragon Age, the aforementioned D&D RPGs are a great place to start as is Drakensang. Be warned, though, as Drakensang uses a ruleset called The Dark Eye (Das Schwarze Auge in its most common form) which can be more complicated than D&D. It's a less forgiving game than Dragon Age, too.
If you're after something with the same sort of feel to it, the Witcher is a much more mature RPG.
Think I'll throw an oddball in here. If you like party based combat with DA:O level complexity in regards to stats, I would recommend the original nine Might & Magic games (I think 6-8 are probably the best to get accustomed to). They're kinda complex, bit unforgiving and a bit frustrating, but they could provide a cheap challenge for you.

As for The Elder Scrolls, it's a bit harder to recommend. I'll agree on Dark Messiah, although be warned that it's incredibly linear and perhaps more akin to, say, BioShock than Elder Scrolls in that it plays and feels more like an FPS with RPG elements stapled on than it does an RPG - if that at all makes sense. If you fancy a departure into sci-fi, then Fallout 3 would be a good idea as it feels very similar to Oblivion, although I (personally) wouldn't call it "Oblivion With Guns".

I don't know if it's your kind of game, but I'm going to recommend you look into King's Bounty: Armored Princess. I find it better than its predecessor and better than the series it heavily draws from, i.e. Heroes of Might & Magic. Its RPG qualities are fairly simplistic (3 talent trees and 3 major stats to worry about, I believe), but I've spent about 32hrs in it and I love it to pieces. Would highly recommend it even if it's perhaps not a "true" RPG.

A lot of these were released for like Windows 98, or in the early 2000's. Would there be problems with running them on a new PC?

Should be fine, Yasuraka. Atari re-released the whole bally lot of Interplay D&D games not too long ago, and I can't see them doing so if they wouldn't work on Vista/7.

How does Neverwinter Nights 1 compare to 2? I seem to have the Diamond edition lying around (and installing ATM), and I imagine it's the first game, not the second.

Gothic 2 seems to be the best one to grab, and apparently number 4 is coming out this fall.

Gonna research the two Baldur's Gate games. For the second, what package would you recommend getting, for the base game and all expacs, etc? I can't sort them out too well.

Diamond Edition will be the first, yeah. NWN1 is... I can't remember. Different. I much prefer NWN2, and there are others who think Obsidian's entry is the superior one, especially when one takes expansions into consideration.

DA:O-Awakening reminds me a little too much of NWN2, though. Naughty BioWare.

If you can put aside the graphics and the inconvenient controls (you'll get used to it pretty soon), start with the first episode. The whole "we are prisoners locked beyond a barrier and we do as we please" feel is damn well done, and the references and changes in G2 will add a lot to the experience.

I played G1 briefly. Aside from the fact that the Gothics are one heck of games to start (!), they are great. I second or third the Gothic series (especially liked the second).

(!) They are hard because they were designed to be so. It's like Baldur's Gate. Chances are you won't survive a full grown wolf on level 1. Once you get the combat mechanics though, it's very nice and clean.

Might & Magic 6-8 are a good suggestion, but I would play Wizardry 8 instead of M&M 9. M&M 9 was basically a failed reboot of the series, with bad graphics & bad gameplay. While I don't like older Wizardry games, Wizardry 8 blows it away completely. It's kind of an avant-garde Morrowind.

Yep, those should be all.

The 4 in 1 consists of BG 1&2 and their expansions which means 4.

The IWD ultimate collection consists of IWD 1 + exp and IWD2. Yep, that should definitely be all.

Personally I never liked much about the Witcher. It's not much like Dragon Age: Origins. There is a demo for the game you want to try it out and see how good or bad it is for yourself.

Everbody should own the Baldurs gate saga, its one of the best RPGs ever made.

But its a old game and some people could get borred because of the old graphics.

The widescreen mod should help at least a little bit.

It's pretty straightforward for Baldur's Gate II, but you have to do a little more to get it working with the original.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is about the only modern RPG with similar elements to Dragon Age (and almost all BioWare games) and of course, it's D&D.

NWN 2 is from obsidian and it was a disappointment for me. they are geting the rights to make the sequels for good games like NWN 1 everthing they throw at us sucks. I mean look at Fallout new vegas...

They even tried to make something like Mass effect, what was the name alpha protocol?!

But I did buy NWN 2, because I am such a big D&D fan, but sometimes I regret it...

I was kind of disappointed in NWN 2 at first myself (never finished it but I feel like fixing that now, even if only because it seems there's not going to be another D&D game for a long while) but the Expansions like Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir have gotten some praise.

Yes. Look at the game that's not released yet.

Um. Same engine. That's about the only similarity. So I'm just gonna say "ZOMG BIOWARE TREID 2 MAEK SOMETHING LIKE GEARS OF WAR, WHAT WAS THE NAME? OH YEAH MASS EFFECT 2" as a counter to that.

And that's your choice.

Doesn't make them a bad studio, plus they were recommended by BioWare for at least one game (KotOR2, I think).

@ OnlyShallow89

I palyed more than one game and I was disappointed, yes new vegas is not out but I think its not going to be a exception. I saw the trailer, lets talk again on the release date.

First try to think befor starting to shout out stupid thinks.

ME and Alpha P. are very similar, not just because of the cover system and the engine. they are both shooter with RPG elements in it. somebody who compares gears with ME knows nothig.

And just because Bioware likes Obsidian it dosent have to mean that everbody should like them as well.

Yes that was my choice and this is my opinion, say what you want.

Reasons why Gears and ME2 are similar:

Unreal Engine 3, cover-based combat system, relatively small selection of weapons, indirect command of squad members, sci-fi settings... We could be here all day.

there are enough other games with the unreal engine thats not really a reason.

you should read my posts better I allready sad something about the cover system.

comand of squad members? You cant be serious, your squad members in gears dont have skills or talents.

Hahaha and sci fi setting, there are billions of other games in that setting thats not a reason to say that are similar games,

Yes we could be here all day but that dont changes the fact that you dont have a clue...
