I found the unmodified BG1 quite gentle and charming, even though I came to it after BG2. I liked letting my party amble (or, later, run with shadowkeeper'd boots of speed) through woodlands or over flowering meadows, defeating a gnoll here, being eaten by an injured wolf there. Taking into account the expansion TotSC, BG is even more non-linear and vast than its sequel. Though I loved BG2, for some reason I feel more attached to BG.

I can see why some people here find the original BG dull: I think the only way to find out how you respond to it is, as swordfishtrombone said, to play it. Though I'd recommend that you don't make up your mind one way or the other until you've reached the city of Baldur's Gate, where the plot becomes a little more focused.

Believe me OP I play mainly rpgs and there aren't many modern rpgs similar to Dragon Age, so that explains in a way DA:O's massive success. PC rpg gamers badly needed a next-gen quality game like Dragon Age and beyond Dragon Age is chaos...

If you haven't played Baldur's Gate in its time and you're going to play it now for the first time, believe me, you'll feel that it's very ancient now.

The only similar and kinda modern rpg is Neverwinter Nights 2, great game, but for sure it's lesser from DA:O. It has an expansion though called Mask of the Betrayer which is a masterpiece, and it's superior from DA:O's expansion, Awakening, by far.

There are many great action rpgs for the pc though, like Witcher, Jade Empire, Dungeon Siege 2, Rise of the Argonauts and Vampire the Masquerade.

It's a matter of taste though.

Neverwinter Nights 1
is a great but older game from Bioware.

What does it better than Dragon Age is that you have multiplayer support here and can play online with many players...pretty much like an MMO before thoose where even invented. Especially good for computerized roleplaying. If you want a mix of the pen and paper feel and modern computer games this is the best.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was a terrible dissapointment for me. Not at all the solid platform that NWN1 was for gaming. I've heard that thoose who are into single player campaigns liked it though (which I am not).

Also NWN2 wasn't developed by Bioware but by Obsidian.

Heh. Hahahahaaaahahahaha... *giggles uncontrollably*

Clearly, SuperFly_2000 has never heard of the original AOL version of Neverwinter Nights.

Or even EverQuest, as that was a 1999 release as opposed to NWN's 2002 release.

NWN on Wiki. Love that box art!

Is there a game similar to Dragon Age where you get to know and talk to your party. I thought that a great thing in DA:O. I hated the expansion simply because there wasn't much interaction with your party members so I could care less who died, only needed them to perform their role (e.i. tanking, picking locks, or healing). I did play BG years ago, when it first came out, never played the second one so I don't really know if there is party banter or not, but I felt like that is one of the reasons why I did like DA:O. (I also played NWN, again years ago.)

Also, is there anyone who knows if that will be in DA 2?

Thank you in advanced. Sorry I bumped the thread, but I didn't want to make a new one when this is similar to the OP.

tearydaze - Neverwinter Nights 2 has party banter, and you get to know your companions. If you liked DA:O, I'm pretty sure you'll like NWN2 too.

And Baldur's Gate 2! You don't know what you're missing! It definitely has party banter, and some great characters. It's better than BG1 in every respect, IMHO. I didn't even like BG1 much at all, but BG2 is still the best RPG I've played.

I second Neverwinter Nights 2. Also look into Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.

Baldur's Gate 2 is an excellent game, but might not feel quite the same. You get to know party members gradually over the course of adventuring with them. However, it's done via interjections, banter with other NPCs, and whenever they approach your character for a talk. There isn't any lengthy exposition in the vein of Dragon Age where you can chat with an NPC nonstop at any time. Most notably, they always take initiative. You can't pick their brain whenever you want. You have to wait until they come to you.

Edit: I can't believe Planescape: Torment slipped my mind when I posted this. Shame on me.

Yep, NWN2, especially with its expansion Mask of the Betrayer, which really is excellent. NWN1 also a good buy, mainly for the xp Hordes of the Underdark. You can also get some damn fine modules for both NWN games too (some rubbish out there, but also more than a fair share of genius).

Planescape Torment is another marvellous story-driven Infinity Engine CRPG (looks similar to Baldurs Gate and IWD). Don't know if you can get get it for newer operating systems, though (it's been a while). It's also not your traditional fantasy setting, but well worth a play. Lots of lovely party convos in this one, too.

Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines is fab, but you absolutely need one of the various 'unofficial' patches, because otherwise it's a bugfest. You don't have a party in this game, however, so if party-based gameplay, banter etc is what you're after, it might not be for you. Combat is also real-time, first or third person.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 also good (be warned, the ending of the second game has drawn a LOT of fire for being incomplete/rushed - myself, I didn't mind it, and there's a mod out there that restores a fair bit of cut content)

Mass Effect? I personally love both games, and I think you can get to know your squad pretty well - but the combat is more shooter than traditional CRPG, there isn't much 'on the road' conversation (except the infamous 'Elevator talks' in ME1!), and the second one has attracted a fair bit of criticism for lacking depth. x

@tearydaze: I highly suggest the original KOTOR. It's a bit old, but it's a great game. You can talk to all your party members in the Ebon Hawk, the same way you can talk to your companions in DAO. Trust me; KOTOR is amazing. It's made by Bioware so you know it's good. ;)
I would also get the second one. Even though people really hated the second one for it's story, I still really enjoyed it; I think the restoration mod is already out too. If you get them together on Steam, they're only like $20.

@Sneelonz Did you mean Star Wars, Knights of the Old Republic?

I think I'm going to get NWN2 first, I'll go from there.
