Vulnerability hex is your friend with the tough fights - it makes spells actually hit and do decent damage.
So are revanents in the game just as a joke?

Revenants are easily some of the hardest fights I've encountered so far. The first one I ran into was in Redcliffe castle, and I had the help of the 4-5 knights that charge in when you open the gate. Party got wiped 4 times (I didn't realize he was AoE'ing everyone in melee range for huge amounts of damage) before I beat him, and even then I was down 2 characters and the entire party of knights was dead except for Ser Perth. I also didnt have any form of heals other than poultices, and he resisted EVERY form of debuff or disable I threw at him.
Second one I encountered was the one in the mage tower, and even with Wynne in the party now, I didn't have a chance. Tried him about 5 times or so and I think the best I did was get him down to half health.
The revenants in Brecilian forest were much easier despite them having parties of skeletons with them, but I had a much more well rounded party and pretty good gear for my level, and an ample supply of health consumables. I did re-try the one with the skeleton mage a couple times, he kept paralyzing my player character who was subsequently getting owned by focus fire despite Wynne's efforts. Once I managed to live through the paralyze and get the mage, the rest of the fight was just whittling down the revenants health.

I finally had to turn down the difficulty for my first one at level 7. I didn't have a dedicated healer, and wasnt' expecting to run into something like that, since I was pretty much craving up any other opponents, so I didn't have enough potions. I died like 10 times in a row.

I wonder if revenants don't scale to party level - they're part of a world-spanning sidequest, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I ran into my first in the Mage tower, ROFL. I was a new-ish character and got destroyed, ha ha. So no, I doubt they scale to party level, just that some would be harder than others, but the basic ones are still damn hard.

One thing that is pretty unfair is that a cold iron rune that increases damage against undead DOES NOT WORK ON THE REVENANT... How utterly stupid is that...
I definitely feel that Bioware shouldnt have made such a blunder.. I mean even the LORE clearly states they are reanimated men... there are the definition of undead.. and yet my rune is worth dog****... Oh But it works JUST PEACHY on the guys who rise up with the Revenant...
Sorry just needed to rant about how stupid this is...
BUMP This Should be fixed Addressed BIOWAAAARE!!! I HATES YEE

Use a magebane poison, and traps. And have shale tank and lots of healing pots. Its not impossibility because I completed the armor quest on hard the other night. I speced Sten with one talent in poisons so he could use them on his weapons.

I just keep Revenants permanently frozen by using Cone of Cold on my PC and Morrigan. By doing this I was able to take them down as early as level 8 on normal difficulty. Mind you I took me a few reloads each time as the Revenant would gib Allister in 2 or 3 hits if the spell got resisted.

Oh man, that is why that fight was hard for me.
This was the only hard Rev fight on Hard difficulty I had to face, however I did it after letting Redcliff get destroyed so I had no Knights to back me up =/. Well on my current playthrough I took the effort to actually save Redcliff so it will be easier.
Revs are very good against melee characters, try to stack ranged/mages against him with a single tank taunting. One healer can keep up with the damage on a single tank, but his melee AOEs will destroy your party if you swarm him with melee.
I recommend Morrigan for spell DPS, Wynne for healing, then either Alastair or yourself if you are the tank, and then the 4th is either Leliana or yourself if Alastair is tanking.
