Not sure this is the right placeto ask this, but I was both ME 1 and 2 on 360, but I am thinking about getting them for pc to have on the go.  My question is how do these games play on pc?  I have heard that originally they were made for pc over xbox.  How are the controls?  Is it easy to play?  Also since ME1 is a few years old and I will probably have trouble finding a new copy could a used one work?  I know with pc games it involves codes and such so I am not sure if used copies will work.

No, they were made for the 360 first. However, they have been ported quite well imo, and if anything ME 1 controls better on the PC. Also Mass Effect 1 is on sale for £3.24 ($5) from Steam right now. If you're going to get it get it there and get it now.

I have them both for the PC, both very good ports IMO.

The codes are just a simple CD key.

ME1 was ported, ME2 was designed from the ground up for both systems.

Both are running on the same game engine, and the port of ME-1 wasn't done quite as cleanly as the ME-2 game ended up being written, so the older game actually runs less well on medium quality or lesser hardware than ME-2 does.  The official requirements for ME-1 were basically meaningless, particularly regarding graphics, with the same card being named as the Radeon minimum, as well as not being good enough (the X1600 Pro and the X1300 XT are in fact the exact same card, after the X1650 was released, and the older card was renamed).

My comments on porting were in this case purely to do with interface and controls as the OP made no mention of the technical requirements. I fully understand that ME1 isn't quite so well optimised though.

I have medium hardware* and I can run Mass Effect 1 in full HD at around 50 frames per second. I have to lower the resolution to 1600x900 to get a similar framerate from Mass Effect 2. I played the game on a 1280x1024 monitor before I upgraded and then Mass Effect 2 did run a little better.

* Geforce 9600 GT, 2GB RAM, AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ 3.0 Ghz (Framerates don't change when I underclock to 2.6 Ghz to decrease fan noise.)

Mass Effect is on sale on Steam for $5 right now. If that sale's still going when you see this (might not be, it's a "Saturday" sale) then seriously, go buy before the sale ends. You can worry about getting Mass 2 later. (Or you can buy it on Steam too if the sale is still on; it's been marked down for this sale too, although not as much). $5 for the only SecuROM-less version of Mass Effect 1 is a pretty good way to go, and I doubt you'll see a better deal for it.

I guess it comes down to if you prefer playing a game with the WASD or a controller. I like the keyboard/mouse better and the port of Mass Effect 1 is great. As people have mentioned, the keyboard controls are actually better for the Maco in ME1. As for ME2, both are good just comes down to the preference for the keyboard or a controller.

well looks like that sale ended its back to $20 :( If I was to buy it on steam could I transfer the game over to a new computer? Also can you just transfer save files? Like if I was to download the game on my current lap top than get a new one could I just import my save games over?

All your saves should be found under your My Documents in Bioware/Mass Effect

Just copy that folder to your other PC.

Ok now what if I buy the game off steam? Can I still transfer the game to a new computer as well? Also on steam it said internet connection is required to play, does that mean that you always have to be connected to the internet to play mass effect if you buy it off of steam?

I believe Steam uses the same folder for savefiles as the other ME versions. The internet connection is for a one time activation. You won't notice it's happening.

Yes, the Steam version is no different from the retail version regarding save games.

Steam allows you to install your game on any computer. Just have to log-in on your steam account and re-download the game. Once the game is fully downloaded and updated, there's also an option to play offline.

Steam is unusable to me because I'm stuck on a dial-up connection, but since it's either that or Securom, I'd recommend the steam version (well unless you're stuck on dial-up like me).

Transferring savegame files is a piece of cake, just have to copy/paste them.

ok thats good to know, so I download ME1 from steam but when ever I click on the game it doesnt load. If I launch it from steam I get a box asking me if I want to play mass effect or view support infomation and when I hit play game the mouse cursor loads for a second than nothing happens and when I click the desktop icon the same thing happens.

This may work, but it also may not.
Open Steam, find ME in your list. Right click it, Properties, Local Files and then click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". If your download went wrong or a file is corrupt (as can happen) then it should fix it. I've used the tool to fix games like L4D1 if modding goes wrong, and it's rather thorough.

Today my friends dad made the program run as administator and this time when we launched the game the game would launch and the bioware logo would come up but than it would exit and a window with c++ error came up. Has this happened to anyone else?

You could try reinstalling the Visual C++ runtime library (pick the most recent one for your OS here : www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/results.aspx). Make sure you uninstall the one you currently have before reinstalling it.

If that doesn't work, make sure you meet the minimum system requirements. I think you said you're playing on a laptop? If that's the case, videocard drivers for laptops are often outdated, so I suppose we should probably look into this too. What GPU do you have?

Do not forget, Kingofdust, that if you become a pc ME gamer, ya gotta envoke a superiority complex & talk down to and condescend all gamers on other platforms. Sometimes other pc guys, too, just to be sure.

I have a nVidia GeForce 7150M/ nforce 630M. I bring my lap top back over to my friends today and see if his dad can work with that link you gave me. Could the problem be from uninstalling certain problems? Before I downloaded Mass Effect I was deleting stuff from my laptop I dont use much and for some programs a window would pop up saying that other programs might need that one to work, but I ignored it and deleted it anyway. Yesturday when I tried to launch WOW I got the same C++ error message but WOW has always worked fine for me. The samething happned when I tried to play Knights of the Old Republic. I got the same error message but the weired thing is that Knights of the Old Republic still played even though the disc wasn't in the computer.

Well, that's definetly strange. Maybe you uninstalled the C++ runtime. If that's the case, reinstalling it should definetly help.

I may be mistaken (never really bothered to learn all the different GPU models and their specs), but judging by the name, this is probably a pretty low-end, old, integrated videocard. There's a small possibility that you'll get ME1 running on it, but you'll probably have to use the lowest possible graphical settings.

We did all that c++ stuff and it didnt work, it turns out that it was my video card. He went to some nvidia site and upgraded the card and the game worked. Even WOW worked so something must have happened to my graphics card to downgrade it or something on the games were updated. Even though Mass Effect now loads my laptop can barly play it. I couldnt even make my shepard since since the it was taking forever just to select a face. I plan on getting a new laptop soon so its not too much of a set back, but I was thinking since my current lap top came out in 2007 and so did mass effect it should play fine lol. Anyway thanks for the help everyone, much appriciated.
