You'll need the recipies for Health/Lyrium pots. Much more useful than relying solely on health spells. The Mages can continue doing their own thing whilst others swig down the potions. Nothing to stop you going back home and purchasing them if you don't have them already.

I'm going on my own experiences in the Deep Roads. I had both Morrigan and Winnie the Pooh. If he can only swap out one character, then Morrigan would by my choice. During my own incursion into the Deep Roads I used both of them to devastating advantage. I didn't know you could switch out Oghren.

Might as well take Oghren along, if Morrigan can control the battle as much healing won't be necessary so Wynne can rest her old bones

It depends on what spells Morrigan has. I found her extremely effective, especially in the Deep Roads. Without knowing what spells you've given her it's difficult to judge. I can only relate to my own experience. The more damage you can dish out the better in Deep Roads. With health and lyrium pots you have a better chance of succeeding. Fight long range whenever possible, and don't forget Leliana's bow from time to time.

From what I've heard, Wynne is actually better than Morrigan if you get her early and pump her Magic stat as high as possible. The reason is because of her Vessel of the Spirit ability. Alone, it gives a Spellpower boost equal to her Level + 10 (so it's +30 Spellpower at Level 20). If you have Aneirin's Token in your inventory (doesn't have to be equipped), at Level 20 she will have a whopping +60 Spellpower while Vessel of the Spirit is active. Combine this with Spell Wisp and Spell Might, and she can get some pretty high damage out of just about every spell. There's a video on YouTube showing Wynne one-shotting Gaxkang. She does over 4000 damage with a single Mana Clash because of it.

Get Wynne early, develop her right, and pair her with the right team, and she is one hell of a Mage.

Now I'm conflicted... I'm just gonna try it with Wynne. I think my problem is that a Templar tank is to absorb magic, not chase down mages. Leli is for that.

Unless you respec Wynne is simply more defensive, and Morrigan offensive. In practice the fact that Morrigan should already have spells like Force Field or CoC by the time you get Wynne only underlines that distinction.
You get the Vessel of the Spirit skill around late game, a little earlier if you use every means necessary to raise her approval. At this point Wynne becomes more powerful (iirc, she can even recover from being knocked out all by herself), but if you've been building Morrigan so she fully complements your party then it'll hardly matter.

I can head back from the Deep roads anytime, so I try out Wynne, Leli and Oghren. If that doesn't work then I'll try something else.

You can use a Mod to respec Morrigan and get rid of those useless Shapeshifter spells you'll never use, leaving you free to put your extra points elsewhere.

With a crapload of fancy stuff I now take almost no dmage from anything, leaving oghren free to dish out those lovely 60s and 70s. I'm getting the hang of it all now

My Morrigan Spells:

Winters Grasp

Drain Life

Disorient

Vulnerability Hex

Glyph of Paralysis

Horror

Mind Blast

Lightening

Flaming Weapons

Flame Blast

Cone of Cold

Fireball

Heal

Sleep

Waking Nightmare

Blizzard

Inferno

Mana Drain

Mana Cleanse

She's level 19 now. Perhaps I could have used better spells, but these are paying for their keep so far. Mana Clash is my next stop for those pesky Mages. I still haven't got her Stone Shield. She's gone all the way through the game without anything, poor girl.

Have Oghren use both Sunders on most foes, as well as Pummel Strike for mages and archers. I tend to save Mighty & Crit Strike for a finishing move (ie; Enemy health < 10-25%). And if you have it, give the little drunk some better armor and arms.

You can return to Ruck and sell items, or even return to Camp but this can break the Deep Roads mood. Shale is also great to have along for the personal quest, though the golem may be informed of the results at a later time.
