Okay, I understand how things worked with mass effect 1's save file that was imported into mass effect 2, but for mass effect 2, theres a few things I sitll need to complete even after beating the collectors. However I was wondering how the save transfer mechanic for ME3 will work in that, is the save transfer file only made after you complete the "Final mission" and that anything else done after that if you choose to continue your adventures in me2 wont be credited? In other words, do I need to go back and do anouther play through and try and complete everything before the last mission in order for the results to show up in ME3?

From what I've heard, I think, you can import a post-completion save. So, say you completed the game and then did Overlord and saved then, you can import that save across.
At least that's how I think it'll work.
