This forum being widely centered around a fantasy rpg, I figure I can't be the only fan of celtic/folk metal here.
(If metal isn't your thing, please be mature and ignore this.)

It seems that very few people have ever heard anything of this genre. And most people are completely unaware anything like it exists. Years ago, the first folk metal song I heard was Trollhammeren by Finntroll. I was immediately obsessed with the genre, and would search the internet for hours looking for other folk metal bands. The next band I discovered was Korpiklaani, whos music primarily covers pagan philosophy and upbeat drinking songs. Then Turisas, who most consider to be 'Viking metal'. As that implies, their music covers anything and everything regarding Vikings. Other notable viking metal bands are Týr, Ensiferum, and Equilibrium. Though there are plenty more I haven't mentioned, and I'm sure many many more I myself have yet to hear of.

Anyway, this genre has brought me much joy since I've discovered it. And it's quite sad that most don't even know it exists. So I'm posting it here for anyone else who would possibly enjoy it as much as I do.
:D

Other bands of the same or similar genres:
Eluveitie - Celtic Metal
Spellblast - Folk Metal
Elvenking - Folk/Power Metal
Ásmegin - Viking Metal
Rhapsody - Folk/Power Metal
Alestorm - Pirate Metal. (Yes, that exists too.)
Epica - classical Metal
Amon Amarth - Viking Metal

I'll throw my 5 cents and say that you could also try Enslaved or Agalloch. They have really apparent folk influences.

Moonsorrow, yes. Haggard I haven't heard of. But I'll be fixing that now.

if you like viking metal you can listen to amon amarth..they're great and their songs are above all about nordic mythology..turisas are great too..also haggard are a good band..the classical voices in their songs are awesome..i suggest you to listen to their album "eppur si muove"..it's about galileo galieli(i'm italian and for me it's wonderful that a metal band made an album about that awesome genius:) )

My interest in folk metal started with Roo****er, a great Polish band with some folk influence (their music can best be described as "experimental", they're obviously metal, but incorporate a lot of other stuff), then I moved on to Orphaned Land (oriental), then to Korpiklaani and I was hooked.

Aside from the bands already mentioned in this thread, I'd recommend:

Shaman - the group that became Korpiklaani, more folk rock than folk metal, but Jonne's voice wasn't completely wrecked by alcohol back then
Northland - in the process of recording their debut album, but the demo shows a lot of promise, you can find it on their MySpace site
Alestorm - pirate metal! Not the best group in the world, but if you don't take your music too seriously, you'll love them
Falkenbach - not strictly folk, but you can definitely hear the influence
Waylander - a solid band, but doesn't mix folk and metal as much as play them side-by-side
Heidevolk - a good band using a slightly different flavour of folk than most others

If you're after folk without metal, you should definitely check out Gjallarhorn and Hedningarna. And there is also Wintersun, which doesn't incorporate folk, but has a similar sound to Ensiferum (figures, seeing whose project that is...)

EDIT: Yay for profanity checkers! There is a T, and a W, and an A, and another T in the band name...

Two words: Leaves' Eyes. Highly melodic Nordic folk metal with beautiful organic undertones. Their first two albums have sort of an atmospheric tone to them, while their new album Njord is heavier and more bombastic. A freaking amazing act through and through.

Thanks a lot! It's even harder to come by purely folk music. I'll take a look.

Heh, you said you like Finntroll... You're in for a treat when you find one of Hedningarna's songs that was covered by them. Also, I came across a lot of less-known bands by the simple method called "clicking on YouTube links", it's amazing what you can discover that way.

I'd recommend Tenhi as well, if anyone's interested in folk music without metal influences.

Hah, indeed. That's how I found most of them.

I've never liked viking metal but some irish/celtic folk metal is really good. I've always liked the atmosphere and feeling of celtic music. Some bands... Primordial doesn't have loads of folky stuff but they're the best of their genre nonetheless . Cruachan is good band too, although a bit gimmicky. If you like more doomy stuff, Mael Mórdha is good for you. Heol Telwen has more black metal in it. Other bands worth mentioning are Lunarium, Celtic Legacy, Stille Volk and Minotaurus. Sorry if I bored you with the listing :)

Máel Mórdha - Cluain Tarbh
Heol Telwen - Ar Korrigan Du
Cruachan - The Morrigan's Call
Primordial - Sons of the Morrigan

I actually saw Eluveitie and Tyr live in LA during Pagan fest last year. It was quite fun.

This is the first song on their new album, and the lyrics always make me think of Morrigan, or perhaps Flemmeth, lol.

On a quick scan of the topic, I didn't see any mention of Skyforger nor Metsatöll. I recommend both and especially Metsatöll is a suberb mix of metal, rock and folk influences.

I don't know. I wouldn't really consider them folk metal so much as gothic metal.
