Turisas, Amon Amarth and Alestorm are the ones I listen to most frequently, but I've been listening to Svartsot recently.

And what about In Extremo? They use a lot of medieval instruments, like lutes, bagpipes and many other strange ones I can only wonder the name. And aye, they sing in German, so it's a different experience :)

What about Nightwish?
Amarath
The Islander

I like this thread finding me new musics :D

I don't know. I wouldn't really consider them folk metal so much as gothic metal.

i love nightwish too!but as you said they're gothic metal not folk...also if the songs linked by antiuna(the islander above all) have a folk metal-like sound..

I would like to recommend Bathory, but they are more Death and Viking Metal then Folk Metal, otherwise i like Ensiferum and Amon Amarth.

I know many of those bands. I like the style myself. Very energetic and happy too.

Oh and btw, I know the Rhapsody (of Fire) 's member, Turilli. So much for going to the Uni in HIS city :D

Everytime Amon Amarth are associated with pseudo-metal like Eluveitie or Ensiferum I die a little inside. Please do not throw innocent Death Metal bands into the same pot as these hip and fancy pagan minstrels.

To stay slightly on topic there are actually folk metal bands out there that are worth listening to. Like the mighty Falconer:
Entering Eternity:
The Mindtraveller:
The Clarion Call: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-KAipArPsY (my personal favorite. Most of the time)

Nobody mentioned Finntroll yet. I'm not too fond of them but these two songs kick major ass:
Trollhammaren: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGywo81G6lk (Video is quite epic too!)
Jaktens Tid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1bE2ozy6a0

If you don't insist on metal and are open minded enough for some rock music there are quite few nice irish folk rock bands out there. Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly or Fiddler's Green to name a few.
Shipping up to Boston: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtCAhb5QGSo
Worker's Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTafZRecy2k

Last but not least I occasionally listen to some medieval/folk metal bands from germany, Subway to Sally and In Extremo.
In Extremo - Raue See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAA9SlHo56E
Subway to Sally - Henkersbraut: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOsA8UI8E24 (The intro suffers quite a bit from the poor sound quality)

No one called Amon Amarth folk metal so much as viking metal. And Finntroll was mentioned.
As for your critique of Eluveitie or Ensiferum as being "hip and fancy pagan minstrels"
Please,

Some good bands mentioned here but I actually think Ensiferum is the best of them, followed by Elvenking.

Seriously, why do people praise Amon Amarth? Is it considered "cool" to play melodic death metal with some viking imagery or lyrics nowadays? They don't have viking "sound", only lyrics, otherwise they're pretty generic melodeath band. They're better than children of bodom and the likes though.

Needs more Slough Feg. Irish folk metal? Yes please! They've even got a concept album about an obscure Sci-Fi RPG.
