For me it would have to be the dalish elf. I have always stuck up for what I think is right and the dalish elf do that. Then you got there family like culture got to love that.
What do you think is the best origins story

Dwarven Noble. I just love all the characters in it, I love the mindset, I love the fall from grace, I love that you can actually be guilty of fratricide or framed and you get to state whether you don't do it out of morality or because you're being cautious, I love the not-exactly-saintly type of Wardens the origin encourages, I love how great everyone treats you in the beginning so you get a real sense of what you lose later, I love the return to Orzammar, I love being a dwarf...the list goes on and on.

Human Noble and Dwarf Commoner tie for me.
Human Noble because kind of what Sarah hit on you are hearing "lordship, yes my lord, etc" you really only have to listen to three people dad, mom and big brother. Now you have no title, no family, forced to join an order that is all about defending not being defended.
Dwarf Commoner because you get to see how hard caste-less or dust town life is. City Elf life isn't a rose garden, but it isn't nearly as bad as Dust Town. You then get to give the nobles a big fu by dominating their proving. Get to kill Beraht next to Howe that was the most satisfying kill in the game.

All have equal high and low points for me. The one that I like the most however is the City Elf origin. Nothing better than tearing through dozens of guards and murdering that little ****** of a Bann's son. Also bragging about the deed later was fun to Calian : YOU WHAT!

Human noble and city elf for me. Both have a fair amount of drama and tie neatly into the main story line. Plus, I really love revenge stories, and the human noble gets one of the best in the game.

Human noble. You actually get to interact with some family members before they all get slaughtered. Awesome.
Though I haven't played all of the origin stories yet...

The DE and mages don't have a family but the CE interacts with their father and cousins, the DC has a mother and sister, and the DN has a father and two brothers.

All the origins, I think, are good. There aren't any that I could honestly say were 'bad' or that I thought weren't interesting to play.
Interesting that you didn't ask for 'favourite' origin but for 'best' origin. For me it's hard to choose the best for the following reasons.
I think the most rewarding (one possible way to describe 'best') origin, gameplay-wise is the Human Noble. Although the Dwarven origins are not far behind. They allow you to fit into the game world very well, placing you in the world and giving you a lot of 'feedback' during the game. The whole thing with Howe - or the return to Orzammar for the dwarves - is a huge reward in terms of the origin. I haven't got as far as the Alienage on my city elf yet, so I'm not sure how that plays out. I may change my mind at that point.
The other origins don't do nearly as well.
However, reward or feedback from the writers isn't the only way to measure 'best'. For me, another way is to consider which gives me the most reason to want to be a grey warden; which is the most logical, the most reasonable, gives me the right incentive. So, while the HN, and the DN and DC place me in the world really well ... it is the Dalish Elf origin that gives my character a true reason for wanting to be a grey warden. It's the only origin where I really felt that my character HAS to be a grey warden, and where they have a genuine incentive to make the choice. It might not place me so well in the world, and the writers certainly failed to give the kind of feedback offered by some other origins, but it puts me in the right kind of relationship with the GREY WARDENS.
The City Elf and the Dwarf Commoner and Mage origins follow the Dalish in terms of this kind of incentive. For the Dalish, becoming a grey warden is a matter of simple survival. There is no choice, except to die. For the CE and DC it's a way to escape from a truly horrible life in a place where they have no value - grey warden is a huge step up in terms of status and respect, and even the 'shortened' life span is probably more than they can expect if they don't go. I don't imagine most city elves or dwarf commoners live long and prosperous lives. For the mage, it's a simple matter of escape from the tower, of living a free life, which is a pretty good incentive.
I hope you see my dilemma?
If best = most rewarding/best feedback in the gameworld, then Human Noble.
If best = best reason to be a grey warden/best raison d'etre, then Dalish Elf.

Human Noble is the best because it ties in to the main storyline. Everyone knows your family, and you are treated with much respect. Dwarf Noble is a close second. The Mage Origin is weak, but the ability to wield magic makes up for it. What can I say, I love mages! Too bad the mage can't marry Anora, that would really shake the nobles up!

I suppose if by 'main storyline' you just mean 'the Landsmeet' then yes it does but that's really only a part of it. You can't really dismiss Orzammar, the Circle, and the Brecilian Forest as not part of the main storyline as you can't even GET to the Landsmeet before they are done.

Other than the Dalish I think every Origin is fantastic in their own right.
-Human Noble is a huge tip of the hat to George R.R. Martin (which I love), and gets plenty of love and callbacks during the main game. It also introduces a new option to the Landsmeet which is very interesting.
-Dwarf of noble or common birth is an amazing option for the wandering nomad, stranger in a strange land story that also gives you the chance for personal redemption just mere hours into the game if you want.
-City Elf can just go so many ways, but it's the knavish scamp story that does huge things that seems to be a staple of film and literature. Female City Elves probably get the darkest, bleakest Origin out of any of them and killing the 'End Boss' has to be one of the most satisfying points in the game.
-I love Mages, it's my personal favorite class, Origin, and backstory. I love how it really is another game, another way of life, an alien perspective. The interactions with the Fade, the self-control needed, the mysticism (no duh, right?) inherent to the character, and how you are instantly thrust into a brutal game of politics where the bargaining chips are you and your friends very own lives.
I played the Dalish and just didn't feel much of anything. Duncan rubbed me the wrong way in the HN Origin, but in the Dalish Origin I would have never gone with him unless he took me kicking and screaming to Ostagar (which shows you the beauty of the Origins; He was my 'hero' for my Magi saving me from Aeonar or Tranquility, and my last hope as a Dwarf). Plus I just got this overall feeling of boredom from the entire thing.

There all good but I like the Mage origin story the best. Mostly because of how far I am through the game. Out of the 4 main Blight quests about the treaties I'm on the last one.

Dalish Elf - short and boring
Mage - nothing very cool going on in that one
Human Noble - enjoyable although a bit cliche
Dwarf Commoner - very enjoyable
Dwarf Noble - probably the best well done, but
City Elf - by far my favorite (although also a tad on the cliche side)
These, of course, are simply my opinions

The Dwarf origins. The Elf ones were kind of gimped since in DA all their mystique was stripped away.
I really wish they had put a human commoner origin in the game...especially for rogues. Doesn't make any sense to be a noble rogue, unless you've got some kind of klepto disorder.

Human Noble, Dwarvern Noble, Female City Elf, Female Circle Mage.
Others are pretty "Meh" especialy teh Dahlish as that has nothing to do with any of the main story line elements later.

Human Noble and Dwarf Noble are my faves, but I have found something in all of them to enjoy.
For me, the Dalish Elf is the weakest Origin, but the on-going story, visit to the other tribe, and possible rewards make this one of the most dramatic to play.
