Alright so right now I'm trying to complete the storyline mission which takes place on Noveria. So I've already driven over the Peak 15 and repaired everything inside that compound. It told me to go up to the passenger trams to go to the Rift Station and so I did. After following all the objectives in the area with the tram, I walked over to the tram and pressed the button to go to Rift Station but instead of taking me there it just shows my squad standing and the tram doesn't move. So..... I reloaded a save file from a few minutes earlier to try again but this time the button would not do anything. I just stand there pressing it and nothing happens at all. I've tried almost everything, reloading, moving out of the compound and saving then reloading. Nothing seems to work.
Can anyone help me? And is this mission necessary to complete the experience?

Yes, it is necessary.
This sounds like a bug I've hit before, myself, if you mean they become frozen in their spots. I.e. it looks like the shuttle is supposed to take off and you lose movement control, just like any elevator in the game, but it never actually does. I've only had this happen randomly, though, not repeatedly.
Best I can recommend is to re-install/verify via download client if you have one.

Not sure. If you do need to un/re-install it wouldn't hurt to back up My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save

****. I just re-installed it and it still doesn't friggin work, is there any way to cheat past the tram because this is really pissing me off.

There is a pretty full-fledged cheat console, actually. But be warned, I recall the mission ending with you getting back on the tram on the other end - the tram on the other side will jump you straight to the Normandy debriefing. What I'm saying is, if you cheat over to the other side and then have the same problem in the tram on the other hand, you could be really up a creek. Still, better than ditching the game.
