I was getting ready to do the Purgatory mission when I asked a friend to pick my squad for the mission. I ended up with Grunt and Mordin against the Blue Suns and a couple heavy mechs. My Engineer is good, but not that good. Instead of wondering who the best squadmates would be for various missions, I started wondering who the worst squadmates would be for these missions. This is why Garrus and Jack have come with me to Horizon. From here on out, I've decided if the mission calls for some overload, biotics are coming with me. If I need a good warp, techs are coming with me.

So for the missions coming up post-Horizon, who should I not take on which missions? Who sucks donkey balls if you try to use them on the Derelict Reaper?

Tali and Kasumi would probably be the worst for the derelict reaper.

I disagree because Flashbang Grenade is too powerful against husks. At the derelict reaper I would take Tali and Garrus.

For Tali recruitment take Samara and Jack maybe?

Depends on the difficulty you are playing. Some squadmates are inversely more useful to the difficulty setting you are playing on.

I suppose if you play the game enough, any battle becomes easier no matter what squadmates you bring along.

Grunt was his usual tank and Mordin seems to have the good sense to stick behind cover. Did most of the work on eliminating shields by myself, but then they'd take care of the rest after that. Who would make good squadmates for Purgatory? Miranda and Zaeed or Garrus probably.

Taking Garrus and Jack to Horizon, there were a couple occasions where they decide to lie down and let me handle the rest of the battle by myself, but overall they did okay. I did have to take down the two scions by myself. Damn scions. (Yes, I know the cheat about those two.)

Playing on Insanity, by the way. So I get the feeling that Jack will be tagging along quite often if I'm intent on bringing squadmates that I think would be the least help to me.

Doing Tali's recruitment first after Horizon, so probably will take Jacob and Jack. Usually take some combination of Garrus, Kasumi and Miranda.

Why bother taking any squadmates? You can disable them and do all the killing yourself. You may also want to use Pistol only and no powers for greater challenge. Or just disable auto health/shields regeneration. Many ways to make the game harder..just pick what you like :)

On Insanity... then like I said for the derelict reaper... Tali and Kasumi. For the Collector Ship Garrus and Zaeed.

Nah, I never felt like bothering modding my save games since I'm on the XBox 360. Besides, plenty of videos of others playing Insanity solo.

Mostly, it's an exercise of discovering what my squadmates are capable of when I'm using them out of their element. I get stuck taking the same squadmates on certain missions because I know they'll do well. But does that mean the others would really do poorly?

If I really wanted a lesson in pain, I'd get around to doing Insanity NG+.

That's actually an extremely strong team for the derelict reaper. Flashbang grenade wtfpwns husks. Combat drone, if you direct Tali to use it directly on scions, instantly breaks their AI, and unless husks kill it, the scion will literally just stand there rotating back and forth between you and the drone, attacking nothing until it dies (unless you get close enough for it to use its aoe). It's overpowered.

Of course, for actual worst team to use on the derelict reaper, I'm going to have to go with Jack and Thane.

I find Tali useless in almost every situation. I only like to take her on Legion's loyalty mission to make her uncomfortable. I also like to take Legion on her loyalty mission, to twist the knife. :D

Talis greatest advantage (together with Legion) is her combat drone. It can create a great distraction for your enemies. Together with Legions drone you'll have great control over the battlefield.

Grunt is also a wonderful choice for the derelict reaper. No husk is safe from his close-combat abilities even on higher difficulties.

The best choice for every mission is Miranda. Overload against shields, Warp against barriers and armor and she'll increase the rest of your squad.

On my insanity playthrough (as a soldier) i've taken Miranda and Thane for the majority of the game.

Ouch, I just did this... and I agree, worst combo ever. I thought thane, with lvl 4 shredder would destroy the husks... lol, not a chance. Most times, both of them were dead and I was runnig around avoiding husks while I killed scions. I was an engineer with no ammo powers and it was well beyond tough to do. Only saving grace was bringing the Cain for the last level  and ending it quickly.

Other than those two, Jacob is also equally useless.

I feel bad for Jacob. Not only did they nerf his characterization, but they nerfed his combat usefulness as well. I mean, Barrier? Really?

Barrier + Pull.  Thats his main combo. Barrier is so he can tank shots when he dishes out the "good stuff".

I'm not all about Mordin's combat abilities. I think Samara, Garrus, Miranda and Zaeed are the best combat buddies for my play style.

Mordin is great to have along just for his combat chatter :)

When you're a Solider!Shep, it really doesn't matter who's on your squad, even on Insanity. Tali stays on my team once I recruit her(unless I'm fighting Blood Pack.) Samara, Garrus, and Zaeed are the best squadmates to have, IMO.

A lot of people compare Jacob's combat ability to Grunt, with Grunt coming out the better of the two. However, when I played an Adept, Jacob was of more use to me because of Pull.

Squad incendiary is also quite handy. He did well for me on the Derelict Reaper.

If he's unloyal, yes.
But if he has Barrier unlocked, you can pretty much forget about pull. Even with squad power disabled.

Mordin is basically a "Mage" if Mass Effect was a classic RPG.  He's not for physically damaging enemies, he's there to nuke the living hell out of em with spells.

Well, i just found out why I dislike Jacob so much. It's not really him as a squad mate, it's that stupid shotgun.

Playing as an adept. Based on your post, I went in and replaced Jacob's shotgun with the AR.

Took him and Grunt, both having lvl 4 non-squad inferno ammo. Both having vindicators.

I barely had time to cast much. They were just ripping the enemy to shreds. I placed them on opposite sides of fire lanes and could pretty much just sit there and watch.

I took them on Horizon and only had one death from Jacob. That was my fault as I was busy running away from the end boss thing and it fell right on top of him while doing it's biotic explosion thing. But, I was the bait and those two, aside from me clearing the boss's barier, finished the thing off.

I've never had squad mates do so much damage and never had a play through on Horizon where I did so little. Usually I'm having to kill everything with powers or weapons while micromanaging my team and keeping collectors or husks from killing them.

They are pretty much the perfect team when Jacob has the right weapon. When I put him back to shotgun (evi) jacob becomes fairly useless again aside from the occaisional time I remember to use his pull instead of mine.

With AR, jacob becomes useful, without AR, I'll never use him beyond recruiting mordin. I can't see why BW would nerf him like this except that maybe they thought he would be good at close up pull + shotgun kills...but since he doesn't do that on his own...
