So, I got ME2 today and after playing for 2 hours or so my screen crashed and said no input and my fan went on full blast but nothing works, have to manually shutdown and restart. I had this issue once before with an old GPU where the fan on it stopped working and was overheating, same thing would occur. So i rebooted and turned on SpeedFan, no problems with my GPU fan, so i start playing again, I alt tab and speed fan is showing ME2 using 100% of all four of my cores, annd is causing my entire system to overheat. Pretty sure this shouldn't be happening, looking for a possible fix for this. Here's my system specs:

@Halogen
I hit 100% usage on both my cpu's and also have the disk version of me2
(I didn't really check me1 coz I didin't have any problems with me1)
The moment I saw that my cpu's overheats because of the game. I emedately went and bougt my self a huge cpu cooler and it didin't help! Even bougt a extra bottle of thermal paste to grease it up good! but all my efforts for nothing!
Now my pc specs are..... Trrrrrrr dish!
Amd dual core running at 2.7Ghz
2gig ram
gpu: Nvidia 9500gt 1 Gb memory
running on xp sp 3 and all drivers updated even the bios...
and on the back of the retail box of me2 the requirements are
os: windows xp sp3 : check
processor: 1.8Ghz dual core : check
memory: 1Gb ram(xp) : check
Hard drive: 15Gb : check
dvd rom: 1x speed : check
video card: 256Mb : check
direct X: 9.0c (august 2008) : check
So why does my cpu only over heat when I play me2 My pc meets all the requirements???
Well clearly my pc can't handle this game because my cpu overheats!
So that means that the labeling on the back of my retail box is wrong?
so ither Ea and BioWare creates a patch that lowers cpu usage or they should give me a refund seeing that the shop's dont give any refunds on media products.
Ea and BioWare has got loads of cash I am shure that they are more than able to create a patch that can help us with this specific problem! I am a huge fan of Me I would love this game to work right! but it looks like they are not looking after us the gaming comunity!
You rarely see a ea or bioware official posting a comment... telling us whats wrong or if they are working on the problem! nothing...
Ea BioWare where are you???
I am dissapointed.... a Mass Effect fan.

This is your hardware at fault. From software perspective, there is nothing that can be done to just *boom* and overheat your system unless there is a specific driver turning off the fans or overclocking it. That is something the games do not include, thus cannot do.
For a start, you should adjust the power options.
Go to
processor management->maximum processor state->change both values to less than 100%... say... 50%... if it lags too much, increase by 10% gradually
Info on how to get that far: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935799 (search for "How to customize a power plan" on the page)
Ensure you're customizing the ACTIVE plan, i.e. High Performance or Balanced, or whatever.

Thanks I will try that! I have changed the gpu setting to balanced already though :/

Then I would have to assume that the CPU cooler you have is either defective or badly clogged with dust.

There's indeed something with your cooling anyway. In theory, nothing should overheat just like that.
If you're on XP, then you need to manually reduce power consumption by undervolting or underclocking the CPU using a 3rd party tool or BIOS or otherwise. That is an advanced operation and doesn't fix it, but is somewhat like what the power plan tweak would do on Vista/7. It would reduce CPU power, cooling it down.
There's many tools for this, like SpeedFan. I don't recommend doing it by yourself, as you can crash the system in risky ways...
So I was saying... did you clean fans...

If the fan is faulty, which it sounds like, I reccomend replacing it with a liquid cooling system. Did you overclock the CPU? This in conjunction with a faulty fan could mean the cpu has suffered damage.
