Bad choice in my opinion. Other than a resemblance to Yagami Light, what could he offer the role? That character suffered from serious mania and sociopathy buried underneath the layers of calm sophistication and reasoning. I haven't seen much of Zack Efron's work, but none of what I have suggests he has the acting chops to believably pull off a character of that range.

omg please nooooooooooooo *shudders at the thought*...He may look like Light but I mean, he can't act!!! There's no way he'll pull off the Kira power-hungry look, no way! If Warner Bros does this, it will suck bad. Poor dear Kira being portrayed this way...

Well in all honesty he's not a horrendous actor. He's just in horrendous things. He could do well.

What is with all these manga and anime being turned into Hollywood movies? Didn't they already make a highly disappointing Hollywood remake of Dragonball Z?
They already made live-action Death Note movies, doing it again with Hollywood is just beating a dead horse.
Admittedly I've only seen Zac Efron in Hairspray, and bits and pieces of that horrible Disney movie High School Musical. Whether he could play a character like Light, who is a very complex character, I don't have much faith.

The same reason comic book movies are all the range, I presume: a lack of ideas. They are mining whatever fiction they can to make marketable movies out of. Death Note was a sufficiently well known franchise that it doesn't surprise me some studio took notice of it. Since the previous movies were released overseas they are non-factor. Think The Ring.

Zac Efron may look like him, but theres no way he could play a complex character like Light, might as well use a cardboard cutout. Are they seriously going to make a live action death note movie? its already been done, and the movies weren't that good either, I don't think its a good idea.

Zac Efron is a decent actor. However, I do not know much about Death Note, so I can't really say if he'd be good as "Light" or anything.
But, really, his roles in Disney films shouldn't shadow his actual talent.

Death note was my second favorite anime...until *huge spoiler* L died =( I was so sad I think I might have cried a bit, I loved the show but I just didn't want to watch it after that.
and yes, I think he would play a good Light.

If Efron will play in Death Note, I would be scared entire movie that everyone will start to sing at one point or another. I'm wondering why they making movies from "R" rated franchise? We all know that they will make it PG13 to sell more tickets, so why not pick some PG13 franchise?

Wasn't this news since the first Death Note live-action movie came out? I thought it was bogwash rumour.
But anyway, Dragon Ball Z live-action film was the floppiest laughing bag out of them all. There was also Blood: The Last Vampire live-action movie and that stunk the carpet. Not to mention the Bleach live-action movie being recently announced. *shivers* The Japanese equivalent of live-actions are cheesy and way over-dramatic (Sailor Moon live-action, anyone?), so how does Hollywood think they could convey it in their film?

This makes me sad.
also, the likely lack of Near makes me sad.
I just can't imagine a brooding, casually dismissive, intelligent zac efron.
the very thought makes me lol.

Ya know what? I would normally jump onto the Z-Efron hating bandwagon, but...I recently watched the Charlie St. Cloud trailer, and the dude can act. Darn well, actually.

I support this.
Zac Efron will either give an amazing performance and it'll be good, or he'll be so bad that it'll be good to watch for laughs.

I have seen the Highschool Musical films while being horrendoulsy intoxicated and I have to say he is a really bad chioce. Even in 17 again or the hell was that movie called he acted just the same (also seen while intoxicated).
But it's a chance for him to break out from being typecasted, however I remain highly skeptical.
