^^ If you can beat Ser Cauthorn in melee then you should be sending your 2 Hand in to melee Broodmother. Ser Cauthorn is FAR tougher then Broodmother. The only time switching to ranged maybe even slightly beneficial is with the High Dragon. Or against the Archdemon when he flyes away to a zone you can not melee him. Still, just hold on to a bow you get in the earlier levels - which would have a much lower dex requirement. And the damage is not that different with a bow.

Ser C does not vomit on my armor. Only one going into melee until the last moment is Oghren; who could tell?

And the longbow I used was a higher tier mundane model; magic ones required more DEX for use, and I only used in such occasions as you mentioned (eg; taking out spiders and bears in Lothering was fun).

The only reason to keep everyone at range attacking the Broodmother is if you've enveloped her in Storm of the Century or some other DoT spell. Otherwise, it's much better for a two-hander to be swinging the big sword rather than plinking away with arrows. Quicker kill = less vomit. Though I'm beginning to wonder if I have a favorable glitch in my game. In my very first playthrough the Broodmother grabbed my pc but in several battles since then she has not grabbed anyone. Maybe it's just that I'm killing her too quickly.

With nature balms, the damage from spit is pretty negligible. Even a group with mediocre ranged capabilities can down Broodmother with no healing, provided you have nature balms leftover from Spider Queen.

That is all well and good. I prefer to go this one at range, and avoid having to trim the appendages until she is dying. This leaves me available to guard the archers and mages from darkspawn when she screams.

True, but for that matter, the Broodmother's tentacles don't  spam scattershots at your party either.

Beyond that, it's difficult to compare the two battles and I doubt there's any universal tactic to use that will be  equally successful against both.  I  found that unlike Ser Cauthrien, the Broodmother   seems much more succeptable to paralyzation, and spells like crushing prison.    And that being the case,  when my party is taking her on, I usually have my mage[s] disable/stun her to begin the battle, then I  immediatly send my 2-hander in to  melee.   Oh, and I love it when her tentacles pop up and start attacking my 2-hander.  Because that's when 2h-sweep  + holy smite/warcry become so useful.

The Ser Cauthrien battle at Howe's estate, though,  is truly nasty from any range.  I usually don't even attempt to  employ my  melee guys until I've whittled everyone down with spells first.... which, I suppose, means that the majority of that  battle is fought at long range.

Both fights were fun with my all warrior party. And 2 Hand Sweep and War Cry works great in both the Broodmother and Ser Cauthorn. It works really good in the Ser Cauthorn battle. I found that for some strange reason Ser Cauthorn would resist Pommel Strike and Shield Bash but War Cry would get her every single time. Just move your Warrior between Ser Cauthorns group and a group of Archers would allow one War Cry to knock down 6 to 8 guys down. Also, the instant you see the Scatter Shot pop up on the screen - hit War Cry. It not only knocks them down, but also interrupts their Scatter Shot. Which causes them to waste it. Ha, I had 2 Two Hands and 3 Champions in that fight so archers were flying all over the place. It is also great fun to chain Sweep and War Cry. You can have some fights were the melee monsters never get in more then one attack.

@Smiley - I noticed that Broodmother did not grab any of my guys either. And the first time I did that fight I remember her doing a grab. Maybe it is a bug or maybe it is because we killed her really fast.

No grab = another bug introduced by 1.03, possibly? A fair summation, I think, is that the Brooodmother is not a hard fight for a well constructed party - any reasonable tactic works. I'd rank the Orzammar "big four", in terms of difficulty, as:

Spider Queen

Jarvia

Branka

(gap)

Broodmother

Though Branka is probably toughest until you figure out good tactics.

I thought the same at first because all the two handers you get are so gimped. If you create a good one (don't listen to the dexterity=accuracy noobs) you can pretty much dominate everything. I'm doing a berserker/reaver two hander on nightmare, and I'm practically breezing through the game. Also note that two handers=/=tanks (everyone tries to think that two handers are viable tanks, but they absolutely are not because they have almost no dexterity).
